INDYCAR
Andretti Global reaffirmed its position as the team to beat early this season during an INDY NXT by Firestone group test April 22 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course near Columbus, Ohio.
The reigning champions, which fielded the car last season for title winner Louis Foster, opened this season March 2 in St. Petersburg, Florida, with a victory by series rookie Dennis Hauger and a runner-up result by his rookie teammate Lochie Hughes.
Not much changed in the test Tuesday with 21 car-driver combinations on the 13-turn, 2.258-mile natural terrain road course at Mid-Ohio. While times and speeds are not officially released from private tests, various media reports and social media feeds have given an opportunity to try to make some itemized deductions:
Hauger Continues To Reign
Formula 2 race winner Hauger opened the 2025 season by winning at St. Petersburg from the pole, leading all 44 laps. His dominance continued Tuesday in testing at Mid-Ohio, as his No. 28 Rental Group car was more than three-tenths clear of his closest competitor, veteran Callum Hedge of ABEL Motorsports.
Hauger, from Norway, entered this season with title-or-bust aspirations considering his three seasons of experience in F2, the last ladder rung before Formula One. But there always are wrinkles to iron, such as learning a new car and tracks.
So far, Hauger has steamed out all wrinkles and is the driver to beat entering the next round, the Grand Prix of Alabama on Sunday, May 4 at Barber Motorsports Park (11:30 a.m. ET, FS1, INDYCAR Radio Network).
Hedge Again Quick in Testing; Race Pace Up Next
Hedge proved again he is plenty quick against the clock in testing. He led the test in early February at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and was second here Tuesday, slightly more than three-tenths of a second behind Hauger.
But Hedge needs to convert that pace into results if he wants to stay in touch with Hauger in the title race. Hedge qualified a disappointing 12th and placed eighth in St. Petersburg in the No. 17 ABEL Motorsports entry, leaving him already 30 points behind Hauger.
Hughes Quietly Getting It Done
In almost any other year, 2024 USF Pro 2000 champion Lochie Hughes would be the talk of the paddock after finishing second in his series debut at St. Petersburg and ending up third at this test.
But Hughes also was joined this season at Andretti Global by Hauger, who has grabbed the INDYCAR development series by the scruff of the neck with his testing and race pace.
Still, Hughes continues to quietly impress in his No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship car. He finished second to Hauger in the St. Petersburg race and was third quickest at this test, less than a tenth of a second behind Hedge and slightly more than four-tenths behind leader Hauger.
Hughes is finding the kind of consistency that will let him contend for more podium finishes and victories if his rapid teammate Hauger falters any weekend.
Midfield Tightens
While Hauger held an impressive gap of more than three-tenths of a second over the field, margins were tighter deeper in the pack.
Just slightly over three-tenths of a second separated the No. 99 ABEL Motorsports/Force Indy car of Myles Rowe in fifth and the No. 29 Topcon machine fielded by Andretti Global and driven by James Roe.

Chance Meeting Draws Juan Manuel Correa into INDY NXT

INDYCAR Juan Manuel Correa is a great example of how timing and relationships can shape opportunities in motorsport. Correa was at Barber Motorsports Park during the race weekend May 1-4, not to race, but to coach a driver in USF Juniors. That weekend also featured NTT INDYCAR SERIES and INDY NXT by Firestone events. While at the track, Correa reconnected with Mike Maurini, president of HMD Motorsports. The two have a prior relationship through Maurini's personal business, RTD Media & Management. 'I was literally coming out of the bathroom on my scooter, I crossed Mike (Maurini), and Mike and I go back a long way, karting days here in the U.S., and he's like, 'Hey, what are you doing here?'' Correa said. 'I was like, 'Not much.' He's like, 'You want to drive INDY NXT?' I was like, 'Yeah, let's do it.' 'It was within 24 hours that we had signed a contract, I did my medicals, and I was on my way to Indy for the GP.' Correa wasted no time making an impact during his unexpected entry into the INDY NXT field. In his series debut driving the No. 39 HMD Motorsports entry on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, he finished 21st and 14th, respectively, in the doubleheader. The Detroit Grand Prix on June 1 was his third career start. Correa finished third, earning his first podium on a notoriously demanding street circuit, all without any prior testing in the car. 'Everything is different, but at the same time, to drive a race car fast, there's only one way to do it,' Correa said. He's adapting by using teammate Caio Collet's setups while learning the nuances of the Dallara chassis used in INDY NXT compared to his time in FIA Formula 3, FIA Formula 2 and endurance racing. He finished fifth in the 12 Hours of Sebring sports car race in March, driving for United Autosport. 'Hopefully with a little bit more time, I can start building something that suits me a little bit better, but at the moment I feel pretty good with the car, and I think we'll be competitive for the rest of the year, and we're looking forward to that,' he said. What sets Correa apart is not just his speed, but his mental toughness. He's a survivor of a devastating 2019 F2 crash in Belgium that nearly ended his life. Correa was in a coma, underwent a 17-hour leg surgery and had to learn to walk again. Correa rebuilt his career step by step and returned to racing in 2021. Despite having no plans to race in INDY NXT this season, just over a month ago, Correa has a clear target. 'INDY NXT was not my plan,' Correa said. 'Four weeks ago, I was not going to be here. I was going to be coaching throughout the season and trying to find a drive next year somewhere. The opportunity just came, and I took it, and I'm glad I did. 'I've been following INDYCAR for as long as I've been following F1, to be honest. I just took the European route because certain things in my career kind of drove me that way. But now that I'm here, yeah, (the NTT INDYCAR SERIES) is the ultimate goal. It's an amazing series, and this is the place to be if we want to go.' Correa and his INDY NXT by Firestone competitors return to the track next weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway. The race airs at 4:30 p.m. ET Sunday, June 15 on FS1 and the INDYCAR Radio Network. recommended

Detroit Grand Prix: Cooler temperatures could force IndyCar drivers to adjust

Fans during morning practice laps at the Detroit Grand Prix course in downtown Detroit on Saturday, May 31, were seen wearing jackets and keeping their hands in their pockets as drivers zoomed around the track. In short — it was cold. Not frigid, but certainly a lot colder than Detroiters are used to in late May. Advertisement By the time Indy NXT qualification kicked off, around 10:30 a.m., the outside temperature was in the mid-to-high 50s. But winds gusting over 20 miles per hour brought it to a 41-degree "feels like" temperature, which seemed to have a noticeable effect on the race. For the second consecutive year, Colton Herta snagged pole for IndyCar's Detroit Grand Prix, the Andretti Global driver's first IndyCar pole of 2025. THE FIELD: 2025 Detroit Grand Prix: Full list of drivers for IndyCar and Indy NXT races That's far from the typical temperature this time of year, which according to Weather Spark averages around 74 degrees. And as many regular drivers will tell you, the cold can have a big impact on how a car drives. The same goes for IndyCar vehicles — especially their tires. Advertisement "It seems like the tires are kind of slow to come in with how low of a temperature it is and how cold it is today," said Christian Rasmussen, who qualified 12th for Sunday's Detroit Grand Prix. When temperatures are low, it takes longer for tires to warm up, which makes for slower lap times and potential grip issues around the track. That sounds like bad news, but there is a flip side to low temps. If tires take longer to warm up, drivers can potentially drive on them for more laps, which in turn could lead to better overall times even if they're slower on each lap. "It's like, I could stay out for five more laps, but I might lose 6 or 7 seconds here," said Colton Herta, who won the Grand Prix's pole position for the second straight year. Advertisement "So with it being cooler, you could see, I mean, I don't want to put a number on it, but you could see a lot more laps than we have in the past." With cooler temperatures than expected during qualifying, Herta (and the rest of his Fast Six competitors racing in the final round of qualifying) used the new alternate softer tires to try to get a faster qualifying time. It worked out especially well for Herta, who set a track record with a 1:00.48 track time (beating his own record from 2024). Andretti Global/Curb-Agajanian's Colton Herta enters Turn 3 as NTT IndyCar Series drivers compete during Detroit Grand Prix in downtown Detroit on Sunday, June 2, 2024. REVVED AND READY: Detroit Grand Prix: 5 narratives to watch during 2025 race downtown "I think this is probably the most difficult street circuit, and maybe the most difficult circuit to create tire temp," Herta said. "Like I said, this race is crazy. Like, you just never know what's gonna happen." Advertisement Herta is looking to avoid a repeat of the 2024 Grand Prix — last year he also entered in the pole position but finished in the back half of the field during a caution-filled race. As for 2025 circuit leader Álex Palou, he seemed to take it easier during the practice rounds than the rest of his competitors, but turned it up to a sixth-place finish during a challenging qualifying round. "It was tough for everybody," he said after his morning practice laps. "The good thing is that hopefully it's going to make it a bit better tomorrow with the conditions we're going to have." The "conditions" he's referring to is the weather, currently forecasted at sunny and 62 degrees when the race starts. If the wind dies down, it should create a more optimal environment for racing (and for fans). Advertisement And for a race that for years had the reputation of being oppressively hot, cooler temps might create some more intrigue on Sunday. Kyle Kirkwood wins Detroit Grand Prix, takes second IndyCar race of 2025

When Kyle Kirkwood was asked what happened when Will Power latched onto the back of his car during the first practice lap on Friday, May 30, his annoyance seemed softened by his top-position finish: 'I'm not upset. I don't care. We're P1,' he said. Advertisement He was able to say that again on Sunday, June 1, winning the 2025 Detroit Grand Prix. And he seemed a lot happier with this result than he felt Friday. This is Kirkwood's second win of the IndyCar season, following his win at the 2025 Grand Prix of Long Beach. His best finish in Detroit previously came in 2024, when he finished in fourth place. IndyCar driver Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood celebrates winning the Detroit Grand Prix in Detroit on Sunday, June 1, 2025. "The car was flawless," he said. "We were definitely the fastest, and on the restarts, man, the car just came alive." Finishing second was Santino Ferrucci in the No. 14 car, who celebrated his second IndyCar podium and best finish of his young career in IndyCar. Colton Herta, who started the race in the pole position, finished in third place. Advertisement "Kyle was so fast today, so congratulations to him and his team on the win," Ferrucci said. IndyCar driver Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood, center, celebrates winning the Detroit Grand Prix next to second place AJ Foyt Racing's Santino Ferrucci, right, and Andretti Global's Colton Herta, left, in Detroit on Sunday, June 1, 2025. Kirkwood paced all drivers leading the race for 48 laps, followed by Christian Rasmussen at 21. The race brought an early surprise with no incidents on the first turn, something that marred the 2023 and 2024 races and the Indy NXT race from earlier in the day. That race paused under a red flag almost immediately after it began when a pileup occurred on Turn 3, causing 17-year-old Max Taylor to bow out on lap 1. The first yellow flag waved on the 15th lap when Felix Rosenqvist in the No. 60 car spun out on Turn 8 and halted facing backwards. The caution lasted for five laps, but the yellow came out once again when Devlin DeFrancesco lost his rear right tire trying to get back into the race. Advertisement With the cool morning temperatures warming up by race time, most drivers in the front half of the field began with the alternate soft tires, while the rest began with hard tires. Those with the softer tires went to the pit much earlier than expected, however, dashing the hopes of a two-stop race for the soft-tire starters. Each driver was required to use each set of tires at least once, per IndyCar rules. Herta, who has won at qualifying at Detroit in two straight years, led for the first 11 laps before entering the pit for his first tire change. It ended up a consequential decision, as Kirkwood edged Herta out for positioning once he emerged from the pit and finished the race two spots ahead of him. After Scott McLaughlin's brief spell in the front, Ed Carpenter Racing's Christian Rasmussen took the lead and stretched it to a two-second advantage for 21 laps before heading into the pit. Rasmussen pitted again 26 laps later but almost immediately ran into the wall after spinning out on cold tires in Turn 2, though he chose to continue despite his car appearing to suffer damage on the right side. Advertisement But that wasn't the biggest crash of the day. Big crash on lap 84 On the fastest part of the track, Louis Foster in the No. 45 car appeared to lose control of his suspension and crashed into Rosenqvist heading into turn 3. Foster's car continued deep into the turnout while Rosenqvist smashed into the tire barrier. "I don't know how the heck that happens," said Foster. "This track is just ridiculously bumpy, and that has to be something to do with it, because that's so uncommon." The bumpiness of the track was a common complaint from drivers during the race weekend. Both drivers exited their cars within minutes and appeared to avoid serious injury despite the crash, though both had to bow out of the race. Rosenqvist exited on a stretcher as he wasn't able to walk to the ambulance and waved to the crowd as he was carried off. Álex Palou doesn't finish the race Defending Indianapolis 500 champion Alex Palou quickly vaulted up to second from a fifth-position start in the early laps but fell behind once again after an early pit. He found himself in the top 5 again by the 45th lap and kept himself in a healthy position until lap 72, when a push from David Malukas sent Palou into the tire barrier at Turn 8. Advertisement The collision was enough to knock Palou out of the race, who couldn't continue his dominant stretch to begin the 2025 season. Despite not being able to finish the race, Palou maintains a strong lead in the overall standings. 'Doesn't feel great, but nothing we could have done there, I think,' said Palou after exiting. Palou to this point has won five of the first seven races of the NTT IndyCar season. This is the first time this season that Palou has not finished in the first or second position.
