Mohammed Shami meets UP CM Yogi Adityanath
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 19 (ANI): Veteran Indian seamer Mohammed Shami met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the latter's residence on Monday.
Shami recently launched a scathing tirade after reports claimed that his involvement in India's upcoming tour of England depends on his ability to bowl sustained spells, and some even indicated his imminent retirement.
Shami broke the silence and responded strongly to the claim.
He posted a screenshot of the article on Instagram with a seething message, 'Very well done. Also, start counting the days left to say 'adieu' to your job, then see ours later. People like you have ruined our future. Try saying nice things sometimes, too. Today's worst story, sorry.'
Shami's Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season has been poor for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He has taken just six wickets in nine games at an average of 56.16 and was dropped for poor form.
Shami hasn't bowled for India in the whites since the World Test Championship Final against Australia in 2023. A long injury layoff kept Shami out of action after the ODI World Cup in the same year.
He even returned to the domestic circuit and featured in the Ranji Trophy for Bengal. With his experience, Shami enjoyed a fruitful outing and returned with seven scalps against Madhya Pradesh last year. Rumour mill suggested his return during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia; however, the series went by, and there were no signs of him.
The 34-year-old has bowled the new ball for India across formats in 2025, representing the nation in the title-winning Champions Trophy campaign and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League.
Despite his growing number of appearances, reports have suggested that Shami's involvement in England will hinge on his capacity to manage the format's demands, which begins from June 20. Other reports hinted at the possibility of Shami taking the same route to Test retirement as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Shami has represented India in 64 Tests and scalped 229 wickets at an average of 27.1, boasting six five-wicket hauls. In the aftermath of Virat and Rohit's retirement, India is short on experience. During India's last tour of Australia, India's premier frontline off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin decided to bring the curtains down on his international career. (ANI)

'Batting needs to take more responsibility': NECO Master Blaster skipper Jitesh Sharma after loss in Vidarbha Pro T20 League
Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], June 7 (ANI): Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and India wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, who is captaining NECO Master Blaster, in the ongoing Vidarbha Pro T20 League, feels that the batting unit needs to step up their game following the loss in the first match. Bharat Rangers clinched a tense 23-run win over NECO Master Blaster in the Vidarbha Pro T20 League match on Friday. Leading the side, Jitesh Sharma too was not able to make a mark, but the batter is confident of doing well in the coming games. "This is a learning phase for us in the Vidarbha League. It is our first year, and naturally, there will be mistakes--but what is important is that we learn and improve. The IPL is a different league altogether and cannot be compared directly, but we can definitely raise our standards and skill levels here," said Jitesh after the match, as per a press release from NECO Master Blaster. "Yes, there were mistakes today, especially with the bat, but we want to focus on the positives. We bowled really well, but the batting unit needs to take more responsibility. As a player and captain, I just want to see the youngsters enjoying the game and growing through the experience," he added. NECO Master Blaster will lock horns with Nagpur Titans on Saturday before meeting Nagpur Heroz on Sunday. "Our plan for the next match is simple--focus on playing better cricket and aim for a win," said Jitesh Sharma. Chasing a modest 132, NECO Master Blaster faltered to 108/10. Tight spells from N Bhute (3/32) and M Dosi (2/23) dismantled the middle-order. NECO NECO Master Blaster innings never gained momentum after early wickets, with only Gaurav Dhoble (16) and Akash Kombe (10) showing some resistance. Skipper Jitesh scored just nine runs. Shreyas Iyer 'can't be kept out of T20Is, Tests', 'officially' challenges Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma for India captaincy
The scoreboard might show Shreyas Iyer as the losing captain of IPL 2025, but within Indian cricket's power corridors, his stock has never been higher. On the eve of the final between RCB and Punjab Kings, one of Indian cricket's influential decision-makers offered a striking endorsement of Iyer's future. 'Right now he just plays ODIs, but after this IPL we can't keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,' the official told Indian Express, suggesting that Iyer's impact this season has sparked a serious rethink within the national setup. It's been a turnaround few saw coming. Not long ago, Shreyas found himself without a central contract, out of the Test and T20I squads, and, most shockingly, released by Kolkata Knight Riders after leading them to the IPL title in 2024. The doubts over his fitness, form, and temperament had pushed him to the fringes. However, Iyer continued to perform big in domestic circuit for Mumbai, and even led the side in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Then came Punjab Kings, a franchise with perennial underachievement but rich in untapped potential. Iyer embraced the challenge, and what followed was a masterclass in leadership. He found not only form with the bat but also forged a deep emotional connection with teammates and fans, who began calling him 'Sarpanch Sahab,' a nod to his calm but commanding presence. The moment that sealed his status came during the Eliminator against the Mumbai Indians. With the chase wobbling and Jasprit Bumrah breathing fire, Iyer unfurled a counter-assault of stunning composure. He dismantled Bumrah, cleared the ropes with ease, and held firm as wickets tumbled at the other end. Iyer eventually finished unbeaten on 87 off 41 deliveries, ensuring PBKS chased down a huge 204-run target with an over to spare. Though Punjab eventually fell short in the final, Iyer's aura only grew. His cold stare at Shashank Singh after a critical run-out showed he could demand more from his players. Iyer may not have lifted the trophy this year, but he's certainly forced Indian cricket to sit up and reconsider.
