MUSCAT, March 17: According to a recent report from the Gulf Statistical Center (GCC-Stat), total remittances from workers in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries reached USD 131.5 billion by the end of 2023. This marked a slight decline of 0.4 percent compared to 2022, following substantial increases in 2021 (9.2 percent) and 2022 (3.8 percent). Despite this minor dip of approximately $500 million, the GCC remains the largest global source of worker remittances, ahead of the United States.
The report also highlighted that the share of remittances in the GCC's gross domestic product (GDP) has been declining in recent years, dropping from 8.1 percent in 2020 to 6 percent in 2022. However, in 2023, this percentage slightly increased to 6.2 percent. Remittances continue to play a critical role as a major source of income for many developing countries, particularly in South Asia and the Philippines, where millions of expatriates contribute across various sectors such as construction, retail, and domestic services.
In addition to remittance data, the report revealed key insights into the labor force across GCC countries. The total labor force in the region reached 31.8 million, comprising 54.2 percent of the total population. Male workers made up 78.7 percent of the labor force, while female workers represented 17.6 percent. The number of working citizens in the GCC stood at 5.6 million, accounting for 23.4 percent of the total labor force, with 60 percent male and 40 percent female.
The report also highlighted a notable increase in the number of working women in the region, with a 600,000 rise since 2011. The government sector remains the largest employer of Gulf workers, with 83.5 percent of employed citizens working in the public sector, compared to just 14.2 percent in the private sector. Most citizens employed in the GCC work in the services sector, especially in public administration roles.
The data further emphasized the ongoing efforts by GCC countries to localize the workforce and address labor market imbalances. Policies such as the GCC Common Market and the Comprehensive Development Strategy aim to increase the contribution of the national workforce to the industrial sector and improve the overall distribution of labor.
Additionally, the report noted that GCC countries are placing a strong emphasis on gender equality and youth employment. Initiatives are being taken to enhance the role of women in development, balance population and workforce structures, and improve national workforce training programs. The region continues to prioritize young workers, promote economic diversification, and invest in the creation of green and environmentally friendly jobs.
These comprehensive workforce policies are designed to ensure long-term sustainability and address the evolving needs of the region's labor market while supporting economic and social development.

He stressed that every decision taken by the Ministry of Interior is based on thorough studies that consider both immediate and long-term implications, with regulations developed accordingly. During a visual presentation titled 'Kuwait Visa Platform... New Entry Visas' at the Government Communication Center, Colonel Al-Kandari explained the new system that is introduced through the 'Kuwait Visa' platform. He highlighted the main updates aimed at facilitating the procedures for issuing various entry visas, noting that the new electronic visa system enhances Kuwait's position as an attractive destination for tourists. Colonel Al-Kandari began the presentation with a detailed explanation of the new entry visas, including the lists of approved countries and professions. He explained that each visa type has specific controls and requirements that must be met. Among the most prominent requirements for obtaining a tourist visa are that the applicant must not be subject to any restrictions or security concerns, must pay the prescribed fees, and must submit all required documents. The tourist visa is divided into four main categories. The first category includes 52 approved countries whose citizens can obtain a tourist visa without restrictions, provided their passport is valid for more than six months from the date of entry. These 52 countries are the following: Austria; Malta; Ukraine; Georgia; Belgium; Cyprus; Liechtenstein; Vatican City; Lithuania; Turkey; Australia; Finland; Portugal; Iceland; Romania; Croatia; Japan; Czech Republic; Brunei; San Marino; Greece; United Kingdom; Denmark; Cambodia; Slovakia; Ireland; Canada; Malaysia; Monaco; Slovenia; South Korea; New Zealand; Latvia; Hungary; Laos; Netherlands; Sweden; Spain; Bulgaria; Singapore; Bhutan; Switzerland; Estonia; Germany; Italy; Norway; Poland; France; Luxembourg; United States; Andorra; Hong Kong. The second category covers professionals with financial solvency for travel and tourism, as well as residents of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the United States, the United Kingdom, and European Union (Schengen) countries. This category also requires a passport valid for more than six months from the date of entry. The residents of GCC countries must present proof of GCC residency. The residency document must clearly state the profession and expiration date and must be valid for more than six months from the date of entry. The third category, which has not yet come into effect and is currently under development, includes visitors from other countries who can prove financial solvency through criteria set by the administration. This category requires a passport valid for more than six months from the date of entry, a recent bank statement as proof of financial solvency, and a confirmed hotel reservation for the duration of the stay. A security deposit will be held from the visitor's credit card (Visa or MasterCard) at the time of visa payment. This deposit will be forfeited in the event of a violation and refunded upon departure. The fourth category is designated for international and local events, with requirements determined based on the nature of each event at the time. Colonel Al-Kandari stressed that tourist visit visas to Kuwait are divided into two types - 'single-entry' visas, which are valid for one, two, or three months with a stay of up to 30 days, and 'multiple-entry' visas, which are valid for three months, six months, or one year, with each stay not exceeding 30 days per entry. Colonel Al-Kandari also highlighted the amendments to family visas, explaining that the most important controls and requirements include: providing proof of kinship through a document in Arabic or translated into Arabic by an accredited translation office, presenting documents such as a marriage contract or birth certificate, and that the relationship must be within the fourth degree of kinship or the third degree through marriage. He noted that family visit visas are divided into two categories. The first is 'single-entry' for one, two, or three months with a stay of up to 30 days; and the second is 'multiple-entry' for three, six, or one year, provided that each stay does not exceed 30 days per entry. As for the commercial visa, which is issued to individuals invited by a civil entity, institution, or company for business purposes, Colonel Al-Kandari explained that it includes two categories: 'single-entry' for one month with a stay of up to 30 days, and 'multiple-entry' for three, six, or one year, with each stay not exceeding 30 days per entry.

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 13: The global economy showed signs of relative improvement in the second quarter of 2025, driven primarily by accelerated spending on imports in anticipation of higher US tariffs, alongside a general improvement in global financial conditions. This was revealed by Jamal Al-Loughani, Secretary-General of the Arab Energy Organization (AEO), in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Wednesday, following the release of the organization's second quarterly report on the global oil market. Al-Loughani noted that the global economic growth rate forecast for 2025 was revised upward to 3%, compared to the earlier forecast of 2.8%. He attributed this positive shift to factors such as improved financial conditions and preemptive import spending. However, he cautioned that the lack of comprehensive trade agreements continues to stir concerns about the long-term impact of ongoing global trade uncertainties. Despite this uptick in global growth, Al-Loughani pointed to a concerning 12.1% decline in the average spot prices of the OPEC basket of crudes, which fell to USD 67.4 per barrel during the second quarter. The prices of crude oil futures also recorded quarterly losses, with Brent crude and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) falling by 10.8%, reaching $66.8 and $63.7 per barrel, respectively. The AEO Secretary-General attributed the drop in oil prices to several factors, including shifts in US trade policy, growing concerns about a potential slowdown in global economic growth, and weaker oil demand. Additionally, he mentioned that the downgrade of the US sovereign credit rating due to rising government debt and a slowdown in China's industrial production and retail sales further dampened investor sentiment. Global oil supplies showed a slight increase, rising by 0.4% compared to the previous quarter, reaching 104 million barrels per day. This uptick was largely due to increased output from OPEC+ nations and the United States. On the demand side, however, global oil consumption saw a modest decline of 0.03% quarter-on-quarter, influenced by weaker demand from China and other Asian countries. OPEC member states experienced a 9.5% decrease in crude oil exports during the second quarter of 2025, dropping to approximately $100 billion. This drop in revenue was primarily attributed to falling oil prices. Al-Loughani noted that these developments had a direct impact on the economic performance of member states, with a decline in oil revenues negatively affecting public finances and external accounts. Despite these challenges, he emphasized that OPEC member states continued to pursue economic reforms aimed at reducing inflation, stimulating investment, and boosting labor market growth. Furthermore, the non-oil sector provided some support to these economies, helping to mitigate the overall economic impact. Looking ahead, Al-Loughani expressed optimism for the continued growth of the oil sector, particularly with the OPEC+ decision to implement additional voluntary cuts in April and November 2023. These cuts are set to gradually increase production, reaching 411,000 barrels per day in July, 548,000 barrels per day in August, and 457,000 barrels per day in September. This increase in oil production is expected to positively affect oil revenues, which remain a crucial source of national income for member states. Despite these positive steps, Al-Loughani warned that the global oil market remains surrounded by uncertainty. While OPEC forecasts indicate a decline in oil supplies from non-OPEC+ countries in the third quarter of 2025, global oil demand is expected to rise to approximately 105.5 million barrels per day. These projections, however, remain speculative due to several ongoing uncertainties, including escalating global trade tensions, geopolitical risks in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, and concerns over global economic growth. Al-Loughani praised the continued efforts by OPEC+ countries, including six members of the Arab Energy Organization, to maintain balance and stability in the global oil market. These ongoing precautionary measures are aimed at ensuring the oil market remains resilient amid global economic and geopolitical challenges. While the global economy has shown signs of recovery in the second quarter of 2025, the outlook for the oil market remains volatile, with both supply and demand factors contributing to continued uncertainty.
