The Fortune Hotel fans speechless after major season two twist they 'never saw coming'

Daily Mirror13 hours ago
The Fortune Hotel returned to ITV on Wednesday night with a shocking twist.
The Fortune Hotel fans were left speechless after a major season two twist they "never saw coming". Hosted by Stephen Mangan, the second series sees 22 new contestants arrive at the hotel in pairs.

They'll each be handed a mysterious briefcase. Most are empty, while one hides a life-changing £250,000 in cash, and another conceals the dreaded early checkout card.

At the start of the new season, which premiered on Wednesday night (August 6), the holidaymakers landed at Grenada airport, where they were greeted by Stephen.

However, their excitement was soon dampened when the host revealed that one pair wouldn't be making it into the hotel.
"Your first challenge is to find a room key and make it to the hotel. But there are eleven pairs here and there only ten rooms available at The Fortune Hotel," Stephen explained.

"Only the first five pairs to arrive at the hotel will be guaranteed a room. If you're among the bottom six pairs, then you will be in danger because one of those pairs will be heading home."
The pairs were then escorted to the port, where they were tasked with unlocking their room key by completing a crossword.
After successfully making it to the hotel, the top five pairs chose their suitcases, with Jake and Mike secretly picking the £250,000.

Meanwhile, the bottom six pairs had to carefully avoid choosing a suitcase with an early checkout card inside.
At the end of the tense challenge, best friends Briony and Chelsey picked the unlucky suitcase, and were immediately sent home before even checking in to the hotel.

Another pair will also be sent packing after they receive the next early checkout card, but they haven't been revealed just yet.
After watching the season two premiere, several viewers quickly took to social media to share their surprise at the early elimination twist.

"Someone getting eliminated before it starts? Well I never saw that coming," one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Another added: "So much for ITV budget cuts flying 11 couples to the Caribbean only to fly one pair home back on day 1." While a third said: "Wow harsh start to the show I love it."
A fourth fan echoed the sentiment, saying: "With only 10 rooms available, one couple's time in paradise will end almost as soon as it has begun. Talking about overbooking."
Meanwhile, another viewer shared their suspicions that Briony and Chelsey could return, saying: "I'm guessing that Chelsey and Briony will get some kind of reprieve later in the series."

Richard Osman on why BBC's Destination X has 'missed the mark' as viewers complain

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info The BBC's new show Destination X has viewers glued to their screens, yet Richard Osman feels it hasn't quite hit the spot, claiming the programme has "missed the mark". Launched last week, the series throws 13 strangers into the unknown, challenging them to win £100,000 by figuring out their whereabouts in the world. Rob Brydon leads the intrepid group through various locales each episode, with clues provided to help them pinpoint their location. But unlike other shows, Destination X keeps its audience guessing too, inviting them to join in from home. However, Richard believes the show has 'missed the mark' by trying to blend elements of The Traitors and Race Across The World without much triumph. This critique follows news that Gary Lineker 'signs a massive deal with ITV for a new presenting role' after his departure from the BBC. In the latest episode, some viewers expressed frustration over the contestants' apparent lack of geographical knowledge as they struggled to determine their location, reports the Mirror. Discussing Destination X on the Sky podcast, The Rest Is Entertainment, alongside Marina Hyde, the ex-The One Show presenter remarked: "Everyone wants it to be something it isn't. That idea that you're in a blacked out coach and you have to work out where you are, it's kind of neat." He drew parallels with Claudia Winkleman's popular The Traitors and the adventurous Race Across The World, noting: "It's not like The Traitors where they tell you who the Traitors are. "You don't know where you are so you're trying to look for clues. It's got a bit of 'Oh you've got alliances' like the Traitors. And it's got incredible scenery like Race Across The World." Richard went on to elaborate: "That if you're the BBC, you're saying that the show you would like is something that has the tension of the Traitors and and the beauty of Race Across The World," though Richard believes this approach may have fallen short. "TwoFour, when they have to actually make the thing they're like... 'Well the alliance thing doesn't really work, we have to slightly make that work in the format.' With The Traitors, it's all you've got, and then this, you have to force it." Richard also suggested the programme's backdrop "doesn't really work," explaining that because audiences are participating from home, much of the setting cannot be revealed. Wrapping up his critique, Richard argued that whilst the programme attempted to combine "the beauty of Race Across The World" with the "tension of The Traitors," it had fundamentally fallen short on both fronts. Richard's views struck a chord with many viewers, who flocked to the comments section to voice their agreement. One viewer observed: "Problem is there's no appreciation for social strategy type games in the UK. It's why we're stuck with shows with public votes, whilst these types of shows thrive in America,". Another disappointed fan shared: "I just wanted it to be people driven to a mystery place, let out and use their wits on challenges to do with local customs to guess where they were standing!" Meanwhile, some viewers of the show are taking to social media to express their exasperation. One viewer aired their grievances on Twitter, stating: "Getting annoyed with #DestinationX - the lack of knowledge is appalling!". Another viewer expressed their dismay by tweeting: "I assume it's deliberate in this show that they picked contestants who know absolutely nothing about European languages or Geography, but it's still very frustrating to watch." And a third viewer humorously remarked: "We have some exceptionally clever people in this country. We win bucketloads of Nobel prizes, we invented nearly everything worthwhile, we have an elite of world class minds but most of our citizens are thick as pig s***."

Kelsey Parker's heartbreaking six-word message to kids following death of their sibling

Kelsey opened up on how she broke the news to her young kids who she shares with late partner Tom, after her son Phoenix who she was preparing to welcome with Will Lindsay was stillborn back in June. Kelsey Parker has candidly opened up on the loss of her son Phoenix. She had been expecting the new arrival two months ago, when she lost him just one week before his due date. ‌ The podcaster, 34, heartbreakingly gave birth to the child she shared with partner Will Lindsay as he was born sleeping back in June. She has bravely appeared on Lorraine on Thursday, August 7, to discuss the importance of grief and how she has coped. ‌ It's been an emotionally tough year for the mum-of-two, who shares kids Aurelia, six, and Bodhi, four, with late partner Tom. The Wanted singer passed away back in March 2022 at the tender age of 33 from a brain tumour. ‌ Speaking to Christine Lampard on the ITV breakfast show on Thursday, Kelsey admitted the heartbreaking six-word message she told her young kids, breaking the news to them that their sibling had passed away. She also shared a poignant poem that was penned in memory of stillborn son Phoenix, paired in her grief with Will. "Phoenix is gone with your daddy," she recalled sitting down to tell her two kids. ‌ Kelsey highlighted the importance of being open and honest with her children, as she says her "worst fear" is them growing up and asking why she wasn't honest with them when they were young. She also pointed out that kids listen, and the prospect of them overhearing adult conversations was not the way she wanted anything to be disclosed. "We aren't good for talking about giref and death and it's something you think we need to get better at," Christine pointed out, after Kelsey disclosed how she "ripped the plaster off" and went on the school run to face reality immediately after it all happened. ‌ Discussing how she told the kids, Kelsey said: "It's being honest and telling them facts, because I never want them to feel like I've not been honest, and years later they go 'oh but mum, you didn't tell me this and you didn't tell me that'. "And I don't like the thought of them being in seperate rooms to adults and adults having conversations because kids listen. They'll be sat playing with toys but they listen to your conversation." ‌ She continued: "So for me, we are so honest with them. They have gone through this before they have lost their dad and know he's with the angels now. We told them 'Phoenix has gone with your daddy'." Christine added: "They are so young too, but of course they have had to endure a great deal at their young age. But how are you coping Kelsey? you and Will, as the grown-ups here." ‌ Kelsey responded: "For me we just take each day, and each day looks so different for both of us, but I am strong. I keep saying this, but I am actually really strong and the one thing we are guranteed is that we are going to die. So I do think talking about death and grief is so important." "And taking your time and doing it your way, I think that's important too," Christine highlighted. "This time round for me it was a lot, to face everyone on social media," Kelsey admitted, before voicing her appreciation for all the love she has recieved. Giving her advice to anyone else struggling with grief, Kelsey concluded: "I think you just need to sit with it. You just need to do what's best for you and if that means you don't get out of bed, don't get out of bed. "If you feel you can do the school run, do the school run. I think we live in a society now where everyone judges and there is no judgement with grief because it looks so different for every person and it's your experience."

Downton Abbey star dealt devastating blow as BBC show 'cancelled' after one series

The BBC has reportedly decided not to renew the 1980s-set musical drama, which starred Michelle Dockery The BBC has appeared to cancel a programme from an Oscar-nominated writer and creator after merely one series in a devastating setback for Downton Abbey favourite Michelle Dockery. ‌ The actress is well known for portraying Lady Mary in the ITV drama and is set to appear on cinema screens in the third film version of the programme. ‌ Nevertheless, her television ventures are proving less fruitful as her latest project, This Town, the 1980s-based musical series from Peaky Blinders mastermind Steven Knight, will reportedly not return for a second run. ‌ The six-episode drama debuted on BBC One on March 31 last year and featured Michelle as troubled vocalist Estella. Before the inaugural episode aired, Michelle spoke exclusively to and other publications about the part, reports the Express. ‌ "She's an amazing character, I just loved her. When I read the script for the first time, I just fell in love with all of the characters in this; it's just so beautiful and relatable," she said. She was virtually unidentifiable in the part, displaying a voluminous backcombed hairstyle and dramatic eye cosmetics alongside period-appropriate clothing. Her refined Downton pronunciation was substituted with a Birmingham dialect. ‌ She also demonstrated her remarkable vocal abilities when she delivered a stirring performance of Somewhere Over The Rainbow during a memorial service sequence. Similar to her fellow performers, she handled all her own vocals in the production, which served as Steven's tribute to the musical culture of the West Midlands during the 1980s. The programme kicked off with a robust 3.2 million viewers, but had shed a million by the end of its run. ‌ Despite this, it bagged the Royal Television Society Award for Limited Series and Single Drama earlier this year. At the glitzy launch at the BFI in London, creator Steven expressed his high hopes that the show would continue for many seasons. "I certainly have enough ideas for more episodes going forward. I hope we are with these characters for a long time to come," he said. However, the BBC did not share his enthusiasm for the project, and they have appeared to confirm there will be no future episodes. A spokesperson stated: "We're hugely grateful to Steven Knight and the cast and crew for bringing This Town to life - in no small part due to Steven's passion for the West Midlands. "We look forward to working with him on new projects in the future, and we're in talks about what's next."
