MLB Draft 2025: Day 1 Open Thread

Yahoo22-07-2025
Draft day is here! Over the next two days, Cleveland and 29 other baseball teams will fill their farm systems with draft picks.
Last year, Cleveland selected second baseman Travis Bazzana with the No. 1 pick overall in the draft. FanGraphs ranked him as the No. 36 prospect in MLB entering the 2025 season. Our Covering the Corner readers ranked him the No. 1 prospect in the Guardians system. Thus far, Bazzana has played well when healthy, although he's missed a good chunk of the 2025 season with an oblique injury (although he's making rehab appearances in the ACL and should be back soon).
Cleveland has six picks in today's portion of the draft, Nos. 27, 64, 66, 70, 101 and 132. They move from the first pick in the first round last year to the last pick (No. 27) of the first round this year. The No. 70 pick was acquired from Arizona in the Josh Naylor trade.
Things are a little different this year. Day one of the 2025 MLB Draft includes the first round, a prospect promotion round, competitive balance Round A, the second round, competitive balance round B, compensation picks and rounds three and four. It will be live tonight starting at 6:00 p.m. ET on ESPN, MLB Network, MLB.com, and a YouTube livestream. Day two, which includes rounds five through 20, will be broadcast on Monday, July 14th, on MLB.com starting at 11:30 a.m.
Covering the Corner's Brian Hemminger will be in the comments with all the first round picks, alerts when Cleveland picks and keep an eye out for posts on the first handful of Cleveland selections as well as any notable selections later in the draft.

Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter Call Out Aaron Boone, Yankees After Loss to Marlins

Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter Call Out Aaron Boone, Yankees After Loss to Marlins originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There isn't a team under more pressure and a bigger microscope than the New York Yankees. While they hold a competitive 60-51 record, they're currently playing some of the sloppiest baseball of the season — and it's costing them. Just a few weeks ago, New York sat atop the AL East. But entering Sunday, after back-to-back losses to the Miami Marlins, they've slipped to third place behind the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox, trailing Toronto by 4 1/2 games. On Friday, the Yankees blew a 6-0 lead and lost 13-12, with three of their newly acquired trade deadline relievers giving up multiple earned runs. Then on Saturday, they were held scoreless in a 2-0 loss, highlighted by a costly baserunning blunder when Jazz Chisholm Jr. was doubled off at first base on an infield popup — a play that drew instant backlash from fans calling for manager Aaron Boone to bench him. Boone defended Chisholm postgame, but the scrutiny only intensified later that night when former Yankees legends Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter echoed the same frustrations during the "MLB on Fox" broadcast, criticizing the team's lack of accountability and overall sluggish play. 'You can't make this up,' Rodriguez said. 'I mean, look, you can bring in nine relievers, it's not going to make a difference. I don't care if you bring back their '98 bullpen with Mariano [Rivera], Mike Stanton, and Jeff Nelson, if your pitchers are going 3 1/3, 4 1/3 innings it's not going to work.' 'Where's the accountability?' Rodriguez added. 'If any one of us made a mistake, we would be sitting out right on the bench. I see mistake after mistake and there are no consequences.' Jeter echoed Rodriguez's honest, yet truthful comments about the 27-time World Series champions. 'They make way too many mistakes,' Jeter said. 'And you can't get away with making that number of mistakes against great teams. It just doesn't happen. They had baserunning mistakes today — you saw the guy getting thrown out at home plate. You can't continue to do it. You have to clean it up.' 'There are no excuses. You have to play better,' Jeter continued. 'If you don't play better, you're not going to go very far.'This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 3, 2025, where it first appeared.

The New York Yankees attempted to swing a deal with the Miami Marlins for their former Cy Young winner, Sandy Alcantara, but ultimately, no trade was made. According to MLB Insider Jon Heyman, the Marlins asked for either Spencer Jones or George Lombard Jr. from New York, but the Yankees refused to give up their No. 4 and No. 1 prospects. ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - JULY 29: Sandy Alcantara #22 of the Miami Marlins delivers a pitch against the St. Louis Cardinals in the first inning at Busch Stadium on July 29, 2025 in St Louis, Missouri. More Photo byAlcantara was expected to be moved at the trade deadline entering the season, but as the former Cy Young Award winner returned from injury, his performances weren't up to the standard he had set. The drop in performance likely caused interested teams to drop their price for the right-hander when the deadline came around, despite Alcantara rebounding slightly after the All-Star break. The Yankees were reportedly in the running for Alcantara as well as Edward Cabrera at this season's deadline but were unwilling to move two of their top five prospects to land a frontline starter at the deadline. Lombard Jr. is the team's top prospect and is not expected to arrive in the Bronx until 2027. Given shortstop Anthony Volpe's struggles this season, the Yankees likely want to keep Lombard Jr. around to take over at shortstop when he is ready. Jones was once one of the best two-way prospects but is now primarily playing outfield and is crushing at the minor league level this season. Jones has 29 home runs across two levels this year and is going to be pushing for a roster spot in spring training next season. The Yankees likely didn't want to sacrifice their future for a starter who has not pitched at the level he has in the past, as they look to keep their championship window open long term. It turned out well for Miami, too. The Marlins are 7-3 in their last 10 games, including a three-game sweep of ... the Yankees. Hendrickson to headline wrestling event as Hulk Hogan's venture continues after his death

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Wyatt Hendrickson will face Egypt's Mostafa Aly Elsayed Gabr Elders in Real American Freestyle wrestling's main event on Aug. 30, the company announced Tuesday. RAF01, the company's inaugural event, will go on as planned at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland about a month after commissioner Hulk Hogan 's death. Chad Bronstein, Real American Freestyle's CEO and co-founder, said that's the way Hogan would have wanted it. 'From day one, he threw his weight behind this league,' Bronstein said of Hogan in a statement. 'He met with athletes. He watched tape, shared stories and showed up like only he could. RAF was personal to him, something bigger than all of us. This league is part of his legacy, and we intend to honor it.' Hendrickson beat Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson to win the 285-pound national title at the NCAA Division I wrestling championships in March. Hendrickson's dramatic late takedown in the final gave the Oklahoma State heavyweight the 5-4 win, closed out a 27-0 season and ended Steveson's win streak at 70 matches. Hendrickson later won the Hodge Trophy as the nation's top men's college wrestler. Hogan was a fan of Hendrickson's and believed he embodied the spirit of Real American Freestyle. Hendrickson is an Air Force second lieutenant who celebrated with a United States flag after he defeated Steveson. Hendrickson's opponent was the final piece to complete the card. Elders was the African Games champion at 97 kilograms in 2024 and qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics in that weight class. Other men's matchups include Bo Nickal vs. Jacob Cardenas; Yianni Diakomihalis vs. Bajrang Punia; Darrion Caldwell vs. Real Woods; and Austin Gomez vs. Lance Palmer. Women's matches scheduled are: Kennedy Blades vs. Alejandra Rivera; and Sarah Hildebrandt vs. Zeltzin Hernandez. The event will be streamed on FOX Nation. ___ AP sports: Cliff Brunt, The Associated Press
