
Two killed in shootout with cops in Jitra
Kedah police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh said before the incident, policemen patrolling the area came across a suspicious four-wheel drive vehicle which was ordered to stop.
'The suspects then opened fire on the police vehicle, ending in a shootout that left both suspects killed in the vehicle.
'In the vehicle, police found two firearms, a revolver and semi-automatic pistol, several bullets; a machete and tools for carrying out their criminal activities,' he told reporters at the scene, Bernama reported.
He said a background check on one of the suspects, aged 41, revealed that he has more than 40 criminal records, while the identity of the other suspect was still unknown due to lack of identification documents.

'We believe these two are part of a larger group that commits violent crimes across the country, including drug trafficking, gangsterism, factory break-ins and armed robberies.
'This gang is believed to have been active since 2020.
'So far, the forensic unit has found three bullet casings at the scene, and the investigation process is still underway. The bodies of the two suspects have been sent to the Forensic Department of the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for autopsy, and the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code (for attempted murder),' he said.
Meanwhile, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID ) acting director Datuk Fadil Marsus, who was also present at the crime scene, said the two suspects are believed to be involved in a criminal gang committing serious crimes.
'We are investigating whether these suspects are linked to a criminal group in Klang, Selangor.
'The group is believed to have more than 30 members and police will take more aggressive action,' he said.

SEPANG: A couple has been charged at the Magistrate's Court here over the murder of University of Cyberjaya student Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara last month. M. Sri Darvien and D. Thineswary, both 19, appeared before Magistrate Khairatul Animah Jelani on Thursday (July 10). Sri Darvien was accused of murdering Maniishapriet at a condominium in Cyberjaya between 9.11pm and 11.31pm on June 23. Both accused said they understood the charges. However, no plea was recorded as the cases are under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Deputy Public Prosecutor Raja Zaizul Farida Raja Zaharudin stated that the prosecution was not offering bail. Lawyers M. Manoharan and Mohamed Baharudeen Mohamed Ariff, representing Darvien and Thineswary respectively, sought for the case to be expedited. Manoharan asked the prosecution to transfer the case to the High Court as soon as possible while Mohamed Baharudeen mentioned that the case had become viral. DPP Raja Zaizul, in her reply, said the prosecution required some time to obtain documents in the case. "After we receive these documents and hand them over to the defence, only then will we seek a case transfer to the High Court," she said. It was previously reported that the victim, a Bachelor of Physiotherapy student, was found dead in a student's hostel in Cyberjaya. Maniishapriet, from Kuching, Sarawak, was discovered unconscious with visible injuries on her body by her friend at about 10am on June 24, who immediately alerted the police. She was living with five other students who had returned home for the holidays on June 21, leaving her alone at the hostel as she was scheduled to sit for an examination. A post-mortem revealed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
