Orang Asli teen detained after toddler mauled to death by stray dogs

KUALA LUMPUR: A 19-year-old Orang Asli teen has been detained by police to assist in an investigation into the death of a toddler, believed to have been fatally mauled by dogs. Sungai Buloh police chief, Superintendent Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor, said the teen, from the Temuan tribe, was arrested around 11.50am under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. He said a post-mortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was the result of a violent dog attack. "The post-mortem conducted by the Forensic Department at Sungai Buloh Hospital found the cause of death to be 'neck injury due to canine mauling', meaning the child suffered a brutal attack and bites from a dog," he said in a statement today. Earlier reports indicated that a young couple, returning home from work, found their son, who had been left in the care of his uncle, dead about 20m from their house in an Orang Asli settlement. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning. The couple noticed their front door was ajar and their one-year and seven-month-old toddler was missing from the house. They called out his name but received no response. After searching the area, they found the child surrounded by stray dogs, who had attacked and mauled him to death. Following the incident, police recorded statements from three individuals, including family members of the toddler, as part of the ongoing investigation. Police have urged the public not to speculate on the incident and to come forward with any information by contacting the nearest police station, the Sungai Buloh police hotline at 03-6156 1222, or the investigating officer, Inspector Mohamad Aizad Abdul Azik, at 013-486 1194.

Hosp staff barred from accepting gifts, fees for mortuary services, Health Ministry warns

PETALING JAYA: Hospital staff are strictly prohibited from accepting any form of gratification or bribes for mortuary services, the Health Ministry reminds. 'Hospital staff are prohibited from receiving any gift, contribution, payment, or inducement that could be considered a bribe or corruption in managing deceased patients,' the ministry said in a circular dated April 21. This includes providing information or personal details of the deceased to external parties or individuals involved in funeral management,' it added. Any wrongdoing or corrupt activity related to mortuary services must be reported, it said. The ministry said the hospital's role ends once the remains are handed over to the deceased's family. ALSO READ: Five hospital staff charged with bribery over mortuary services It added that the deceased's family is responsible for managing the remains, and the hospital is not allowed to recommend any funeral services to them. Hospitals may, however, provide a list of funeral service operators from the state Islamic religious council, but it is up to the next of kin to choose their preferred service. Hospitals do not provide funeral management services such as bathing, shrouding, embalming, or transporting the body overseas. However, in cases involving victims of gruesome accidents, decomposed bodies, infectious disease patients, or other situations deemed appropriate by the Forensic Department, the hospital may provide a bathing room if available. 'The state health department and hospital authorities must ensure these guidelines are implemented with integrity, quality, and professionalism to guarantee proper management of deceased patients per regulations,' it said. Last year, five staff members of a government hospital in Seremban were charged with accepting bribes ranging from RM600 to RM2,250 for mortuary services between 2021 and 2023.
