Pant, India's vice-captain, shrugged off a finger injury concern from the third Test and walked in to bat under overcast skies in Manchester during the fourth Test. In the 68th over on Day 1, he attempted a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes and took a painful blow to the foot.
His foot swelled instantly, and blood was visible as he removed his boot. Clearly in agony, Pant retired hurt on 37 off 54 balls and had to leave the field on a golf buggy.
But on Day 2, with India struggling at 314/6, Pant stunned everyone. With a heavily bandaged foot, the southpaw returned to bat, drawing a loud ovation from the Old Trafford crowd. He kissed the ground, soaked in the atmosphere, and soon began entertaining with his trademark flair.

Pant smashed his 90th Test six — equalling Virender Sehwag's record as India's highest six-hitter in the format — and followed it with a crisp boundary to complete a gritty half-century. His valiant knock ended on 54 (75) when Jofra Archer sent his off-stump cartwheeling with a lethal delivery.
IND vs ENG: Mohammed Siraj reflects on memorable win at The Oval
In the fifth and final Test at The Oval, it was Chris Woakes who displayed similar grit. He injured his left shoulder on Day 1 while diving to stop a boundary. Three days later, with England just 17 runs away from chasing down 374 and down to their last wicket, Woakes emerged from the dressing room with his left arm in a sling, tucked under his jumper, to join Gus Atkinson at the crease.
Though he didn't face a ball, Woakes ran between the wickets in visible pain, grimacing with each effort. His brave stand ended when Mohammed Siraj bowled Atkinson, sealing India's dramatic six-run win.

Kirby Dach's recovery timeline raises doubts about return for Montreal Canadiens' 2025–26 NHL season opener

Tony Gutierrez/AP Montreal Canadiens forward Kirby Dach may not be ready for the start of the 2025–26 NHL season, as recovery from his knee surgery is reportedly still ongoing. According to a new report, the 24-year-old has yet to fully heal from the procedure he underwent after suffering an injury in late February. Concerns are now growing about his availability for opening night. Kirby Dach recovery timeline casts doubt on Montreal Canadiens lineup for 2025–26 NHL opening night The uncertainty around Kirby Dach's recovery gained traction after journalist Maxime Truman reported that the forward is still not fully recovered. That report was further supported by comments from an orthopedic surgeon, who spoke to HFTV, stating that the general recovery window for a professional athlete after such a procedure is between 6–9 months. However, the surgeon added that if it was a repeat surgery, the recovery timeline could be even longer. Considering Dach's injury occurred near the end of February, the standard timeline places his return somewhere between late August and November. While there remains a chance that Dach could return in time for the Montreal Canadiens' season opener, it is far from guaranteed. His actual availability will depend heavily on when he resumes skating and how his knee responds in the coming weeks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Back Pain Treatments That Might Surprise You! Back Pain Treatment | Search Ads Undo Montreal Canadiens urged to prioritize Kirby Dach's long-term health over early NHL return after knee injury While Canadiens fans hope to see Dach in the lineup on opening night, many believe the organization should exercise caution. A rushed return could risk aggravating the injury or causing long-term setbacks. Several observers, including Truman, emphasized the importance of allowing Dach to recover fully before rejoining the team. Dach, originally drafted third overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2019, was traded to the Canadiens in 2022 and has since become a key piece in Montreal's rebuilding efforts. Ensuring his long-term health is viewed as essential not just for the current season but for the franchise's future success. Although having Kirby Dach ready for the 2025–26 NHL season opener would benefit the Montreal Canadiens, the focus remains on his complete recovery. With his long-term value to the team in mind, both the medical staff and front office are expected to proceed with caution, prioritizing health over haste. Will Shubman Gill Replace Rohit Sharma As India Captain In ODI Cricket? Mohammad Kaif Says THIS

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has backed Shubman Gill to take over the ODI captaincy when Rohit Sharma decides to step down as the skipper in the format. Notably, Rohit, who is currently 38, will be approaching 40 by the start of the 2027 ODI World Cup and Kaif is not sure how long the veteran India opener would continue in the 50-over format. "He [Gill] will get the ODI captaincy as well because we don't know how long Rohit Sharma will continue as captain. Gill is ready to take over. He scores in white-ball. He has performed well as captain here in Tests and led from the front," Kaif said on his YouTube channel. "When you go with a young team, you have to do both things – score with the bat and do well as captain. A brilliant tour for him overall," he added. During the recently concluded England series which India drew 2-2, Gill was tested as a captain and he passed that flying colours. "Shubman Gill, as captain, created opportunities with both hands in this series. When he became captain, there were many questions as to why he was made captain, looking at his Test record. A young captain reached England under a lot of pressure with a young team. He answered with his bat and it came to a point where he was compared to breaking Sir Don Bradman's record. Such a strong comeback with the bat," Kaif said. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ꮪhubman Gill (@shubmangill) After the gruelling 25 days of Test cricket, Team India will get a well-deserved break, with no Test or limited-over matches scheduled until the Asia Cup 2025, which starts in September. It's a rare lengthy break for the Indian cricket team and fans will have to wait for some time to see their favourite stars in action.
