12 rescued from Katcha robbers' lair

Express Tribune15-05-2025

Police entered the dacoit-infested thickets in the riverine area of Sukkur to safely recover 12 kidnapped persons from the lair of most wanted criminal gang after a fierce gun battle.
A large-scale operation launched on the directives of Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to dismantle criminal networks in the riverine (Katcha) areas, specifically targeting dacoits and hardened criminals, began on May 12. The initiative led to the rescue of 12 kidnapped individuals from their captors.
The operation continued into May 13 in the Bagarji Katcha area of Sukkur, where police faced intense resistance. Armed with sophisticated weaponry, including 12.7 mm machine guns, G3 rifles, submachine guns (SMGs), hand grenades, and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), the dacoits launched a fierce retaliation. Despite heavy fire, police forces destroyed several hideouts and arrested key suspects during the encounters.
The difficult terrain of the Katcha region further complicated the operation. The dacoits had dug trenches to obstruct the movement of Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), and the dense forest limited police mobility. However, law enforcement pressed forward undeterred.
The scale of the operation was considerable. It involved significant personnel and equipment, including five APCs, two from the IG pool, two from Ghotki, and one from Sukkur, as well as surveillance drones providing real-time aerial monitoring. The operation was led by SSP Sukkur Azhar Khan and SSP Khairpur Hassan Sardar and included 100 police personnel, six Station House Officers (SHOs), and two Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs).
Among the notable achievements of the operation was the destruction of hideouts belonging to the notorious dacoit Rajab Jatoi. Although Jatoi managed to escape, his base was reportedly reduced to ashes.
Six dacoits were injured in the operation, including Salamo Jatoi, cousin of the infamous Kashmir Jatoi, one suspected member of the Teghani gang, and four unidentified members of the Rahimo Phulpoto and Jatoi gangs. The 12 rescued hostages included nine from Khairpur and three from Sukkur.
Acting on the directives of Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, police in Sukkur and Khairpur launched this decisive offensive. "The protection of citizens' lives and property is the top priority of the provincial government, and any negligence in this regard will not be tolerated," the chief minister said. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to upholding the rule of law and urged citizens to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
Budget meeting for next fiscal year
CM Murad has initiated budget meetings to finalise development proposals and allocations for the next financial year.
In this regard, two separate meetings of the Finance Department and the Planning and Development Department were held at CM House on Wednesday. These meetings were attended by Minister P&D Nasir Shah, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, PSCM Agha Wasif, Chairman P&D Najam Shah, Secretary Finance Fayaz Jatoi, Special Secretary Finance Asghar Memon, and Member P&D Fatah Tunio.
The CM stressed on reducing non-development expenditures, increasing allocations for development projects, like K-IV water supply, Shahrah-e-Bhutto Expressway, and transport schemes in Karachi.
CM Murad, UNICEF representative meet
CM Murad met with UNICEF Representative Abdullah A. Fadil to discuss collaborative development plans. They reviewed the current two-year workplan (2023-2024) covering health, nutrition, education, child protection, WASH, and other sectors.
Key initiatives include, $5.5 million project for maternal, neonatal, and child health services, Rs17.5 million project for improving nutrition and early childhood development, $3.2m program for policy reforms and child protection mechanisms, $7m partnership to reduce out-of-school children and enhance teacher skills, and $16.8m initiative for climate-resilient water and sanitation infrastructure.

TSX slips as Trump says China violated tariff agreement

Canada's main stock index slipped on Friday, as trade worries over U.S. President Donald Trump's accusation in a social media post of China violating a tariff agreement offset positive sentiments about domestic economic growth. 'China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US. So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!,' Trump said on his Truth Social platform. The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index was down 0.3% at 26,133.45 points. However, for the week, the index was up 1.2%. Global equities had initially rallied in the previous session, after the Court of International Trade ruled late on Wednesday to effectively block most levies imposed since January. However, a U.S. federal appeals court temporarily reinstated Trump's tariffs on Thursday, to consider the government's appeal. 'People who were expecting to see some clarity in the market are going to be somewhat disappointed', said Michael Sprung, president at Sprung Investment Management. 'When Trump says China has violated any sort of agreement the whole premise might be that he might do something retaliatory, which is going to be inflationary and harmful.' Data showed, Canada's economy grew faster than expected in the first quarter. But an increase in imports that led to inventory build-up, lower household spending and weaker final domestic demand showed that the economy was battling on the domestic front. Economists have warned that as tariffs continue on Canada, this trend will persist. This comes ahead of the Bank of Canada's rates decision next week. The market sees a 22% chance of a rate cut next week, down from 27% before GDP data. The TSX has gained 5.4% so far in May and was set for its best month in six, boosted by investor optimism on easing of the global trade war earlier this month. South of the border, U.S. consumer spending increased marginally in April as a rush to beat higher prices from import duties slowed. On TSX, energy subindex fell 1.3% as oil prices headed for a second consecutive weekly loss. Healthcare stocks fell 1.7%.

The ‘Soft Power Brigade'

Soft Power. Hard Power. America is master of both. America's soft power flows from Hollywood, Brands, Corporations, Universities, etc. Hard power comes from the Pentagon. Till recently soft power ascendant. However, President Donald Trump disagrees. He 'and his followers' believe only financial and military power matters. Earlier on in history Count Bismarck stated 'the current problems facing Europe cannot be resolved by democracy. Only by blood and iron'. Hence the sobriquet way: The Iron Chancellor. As of now the whole world is obsessed with soft power and branding. We have 8.2 billion people, each an individual brand. We have brand ambassadors, influencers, IG followers, TikTokers, etc. The great success story in our part of the world is the UAE, and especially Dubai. How a desert backwater, within 70 years, rose to be a great financial, tourist and vacation destination. Great strategic thinking has gone into 'Project UAE'. Soft power projection has played a major role. In the 1960s/70s, Sheikh Zayed al-Nahayan and Sheikh Rashid al-Maktoum understood that along with other elements soft power would play a major role. Sheikh Zayed Al-Nahayan, in the early 1960s, would visit Karachi and enjoy a dinner at the Karachi Boat Club with his hosts (a famous business family of Karachi). Today the Al- Nahayan brothers, led by MBZ, have a vast fortune, estimated at USD 1.7 trillion. They are probably the richest family in the world. Their imprimatur appears all over the world – especially in the Middle East, the Levant, Africa and South Asia. Pakistan had a good soft power launch in 1947. The legacy colonial culture was a good help. In the 1950s/60s Pakistan was projecting a good image – safe streets, imported and local entertainments, clubs, night clubs, ladies entering the work force, Karachi as an airline hub. To the west, Iran was projecting money, power and glamour to the world. In Afghanistan, King Zahir Shah was also projecting soft power. Then things went awry. The region was plunged into a cocktail of revolution and counter-revolution. Since 1988 Pakistan has been making erratic attempts to regain 'Soft power'. Back and forth. Tug of war. The soft power industry 'of Pakistan' has been trying to play a national role, but impediments arise with remarkable frequency. Across the eastern border, the Indian soft power industry is super charged. I am not talking about the current venom spewing out of the media and talk shows. The Pakistani models, actors and other showbiz personalities are doing a great job. Despite the harassment they face, they solider on. YouTube is prefaced with headlines like 'Bold', 'Sharamnak', 'Vulgar'. Whenever I scroll down, it's pretty ordinary stuff. Malaika Auora, the Bollywood diva, exhibits more skin in one episode than our starlets do in a whole drama series. The corporate women of Pakistan are writing a glorious new chapter in management. The ladies in parliament and politics are doing well. This is all part of soft power. The recently concluded 10th PSL unleashed tremendous soft power for the world to see. Great sports, great event execution, great branding. Kudos to HBL and all the other advertisers that participated. Pakistan's leadership team, both in uniforms and mufti, must understand that the Pakistan's armed forces can deal with any military threat. As recently demonstrated it is the soft power that is lacking. Perhaps the Field Marshal can commit a brigade to safeguard vulnerable people that are working to develop soft power for Pakistan. Hence, the title of this article. All actions have some unintended consequences. After the recent clash with India, I see a certain power shift in the senior ranks of our military establishment. The second most sought-after job (after the Chief) may well be the Director General of ISPR. This job gives a brand, face and name recognition and identity to the chief of ISPR. This is a very good asset to senior Generals about to retire and looking at post-retirement options. Let us see how the dynamic works out. The godfather of the Soft Power strategy, Joseph Nye, passed away on 7th May 2025. I had attended two lectures delivered by him. R.I.P. Mr. Nye. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
