What are EV chargers and what makes them 'fast'?
EV chargers, also known as electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), come in two major types: AC chargers and DC chargers.
AC chargers (Level 1 & 2) supply alternating current which is converted within the vehicle's onboard charger before entering the battery, these are slower and typically used at homes or offices.
DC fast chargers bypass the vehicle's converter and feed direct current straight to the battery—offering power outputs ranging from 50 kW to over 350 kW and enabling rapid charging.
Charging speeds are categorized as:
Level 1 (trickle charging): Adds about 2–5 miles of range per hour.
Level 2: Delivers 10–30 miles of range per hour, suitable for overnight residential charging.
Level 3 (DC fast charging): Adds 20–60+ miles in just 15–30 minutes; ultra-fast chargers can deliver over 150 kW for even quicker fill-ups.

For the last three months, the area has been witnessing traffic snarls because of the simultaneous infrastructure projects, leaving commuters frustrated. The Railways shut down the crucial underpass that connects Sitabuldi to Cotton Market for the extension of the fifth and sixth railway lines since the end of April. Simultaneously, MahaMetro barricaded large portions of the main square and installed temporary pillars as part of its ongoing Skywalk construction. These simultaneous projects have created a major bottleneck, forcing motorists to take long detours and worsening congestion in the area. With the underpass closed, motorists traveling from Gandhi Sagar towards Sitabuldi currently have to use the other underpass near Anand Talkies. However, at the entrance of this stretch, MahaMetro erected a temporary platform, which is affecting traffic movement. "The underpass at Cotton Market Square is an important link for both sides of the railway line. Since it was closed, the detour route is witnessing heavy traffic jams. The authorities should not have given permission for simultaneous works," said Vishrut Kale, a regular commuter. In charge of the Cotton Market traffic zone, Pramod Pore said that the underpass is likely to remain closed for more than four to five months. "We gave permission to railways for six months. Currently, three months are completed, but the work could take another four to five months as they are laying the fifth and sixth railway lines. Similarly, MahaMetro's work will take at least three to four months to complete," said Pore, adding that they are regularly deploying traffic cops at the spot during peak hours to regulate traffic. This means that the area will continue to witness crippled traffic for at least four to five months. MU plans to implement digital evaluation
Mangaluru: Mangalore University (MU) is considering implementing digital evaluation from the next semester. The recently held syndicate meeting gave a green signal for MU to proceed with the new plan and adopt it if there is adequate space, finance, and manpower available. The four-decade-old university has proposed to procure technology with the help of VTU, Belagavi. The new technology would not only save time but also a substantial amount of money for the cash-strapped university. According to officials, the evaluation cost would decrease by nearly 50%. Providing details, Judith Mendonca, syndicate member of MU, told TOI that currently, the varsity is conducting manual evaluations. The adoption of digital evaluation will reduce the time of evaluation and the number of evaluators. "The technology will save time and money for MU, besides providing results at the earliest. Currently, for each semester examination evaluation, MU spends about Rs 40 lakh, and the cost post-adoption of digital evaluation will be reduced by half. "The one-time cost for setting up the technology is huge. We are looking at various aspects, including whether MU, which is reeling under a financial crunch, can afford it or would the govt sponsor this.
