JIS Boosts Partnership Between Communities, Researchers
She said the programme had achieved its objective of strengthening collaboration and gathering crucial input for the planning of more effective and targeted social innovation interventions in the future.
According to her, the four main programmes under JIS, the Malaysia Social Innovation Initiative, MyIS Komuniti and MyIS Akar Umbi, Innovation Catalyst Volunteers (iCATS), and the Youth Innovative Challenge (YIC), enabled YIM to gain in-depth insights and conduct a comprehensive assessment of various social, economic, and environmental issues through the mapping of innovative products and social innovation talent in the eastern zone, notably around Kuala Terengganu.
'Among the highlights, the Eastern Zone JIS focused on issues and challenges faced by the fishing community in Terengganu. Throughout the engagement sessions, several key issues were identified, which will be analysed before being presented to the Subject Matter Expert Committee for assessment and proposed solutions. (These solutions) will then help determine potential innovations or technologies that can be replicated within the community.
'Therefore, feedback from all stakeholders and relevant parties is crucial, as social innovation stems from a deep understanding of the issues, challenges, and realities faced by communities,' she told reporters during the JIS programme held around Kuala Terengganu yesterday.
Also present was Kuala Terengganu Member of Parliament Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed @ Hashim, who officiated at the highlight of the event, the flag-off ceremony for the YIM delegation vehicles for the Eastern Zone 2025 JIS.
Sharmila also said that the YIC, held at the Kuala Terengganu Science Centre, saw three winners emerge from among students of institutions of higher learning in Terengganu, who will advance to the inter-zone competition to compete for the MyIS Perintis grant, offering a total of RM400,000 to 10 winners.
She said a student with the best innovative product will be selected to gain exposure and experience in technology and innovation at a university in Switzerland.
Sharmila said that the YIC is an innovation competition that showcases final-year student projects at the Diploma, Degree, and Master's levels, with the potential to deliver meaningful social impact to communities.

Ringgit opens firmer on softer US$, rate cut hopes
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Thursday, lifted by a softer greenback amid growing expectations of interest rate cuts by the United States Federal Reserve (Fed) in the coming months. At 8 am, the local note climbed to 4.2185/2260 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2235/2305. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said recent comments by Fed officials signalled that policy adjustments may be needed to address labour market weakness, reinforcing hopes of a rate cut at the next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. He noted that the upcoming FOMC meeting, scheduled for September 16-17, is expected to see the Fed Funds Rate lowered by 25 basis points. "This would likely be ringgit-positive, as a Fed rate cut would narrow the interest rate differential with the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR). "In light of current market conditions, the ringgit is expected to trade between 4.21 and 4.22 against the US dollar today,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, the ringgit was mostly lower against a basket of major and regional currencies in early trade. It slipped against the Japanese yen to 2.8654/8707 from 2.8570/8619 on Wednesday, weakened versus the British pound to 5.6342/6442 from 5.6160/6253, and declined against the euro to 4.9192/9279 from 4.8929/9010. The local unit also fell against the Singapore dollar to 3.2824/2885 from 3.2806/2863 and depreciated vis-à-vis the Thai baht to 13.0402/0715 from 13.0291/0567. Conversely, the ringgit strengthened against the Philippine peso to 7.33/7.35 from 7.34/7.36 and firmed versus the Indonesian rupiah to 257.8/258.4 from 258.1/258.6. - Bernama

US Imposes Additional 25 Per Cent Tariff on India, New Delhi Calls Move Unfair
US President Donald Trump meets with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House in Washington, DC, February 13, 2025. REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File Photo WASHINGTON, Aug 7 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- United States (US) President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on India in response to its continued purchase of Russian oil, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) quoted the White House. "To deal with the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066, I determine that it is necessary and appropriate to impose an additional ad valorem duty on imports of articles of India, which is directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil," the order stated. The tariffs will take effect 21 days from the date of the order. bootstrap slideshow It directs Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in coordination with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, to determine whether any other country is 'directly or indirectly' importing Russian oil. "If the Secretary of Commerce finds that a country is directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil, he, consulting with other officials, shall recommend whether and to what extent I should take action as to that country, including whether I should impose an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 per cent on imports of articles of that country," it said. Trump said Tuesday the US would 'make that determination' about sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil after talks between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian officials in Moscow. He accused New Delhi of profiting from the resale of Russian oil. In response to the executive order, India described the move as 'extremely unfortunate,' noting that several other countries were taking similar actions in their own national interest. The actions are 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,' the Foreign Ministry said, adding that New Delhi would take 'all actions necessary' to protect its national interests.
