Harbhajan Singh slams BCCI over India-Pakistan Asia Cup clash: Nation above cricket

India Today20 hours ago
Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has strongly opposed India playing Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, saying there is no place for cricket between the two nations. Tensions continue to prevail between the neighbours in the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, earlier this year in April. The former spinner himself was part of the World Championship of Legends, an exhibition tournament which had both India and the Pakistan team. However, the Indian team decided to boycott both its games in the tournament, citing the ongoing tensions between the two countries.advertisementHarbhajan's comments come on the backdrop of the Asia Cup fixture between the two teams, where they can potentially play each other upto three times. The arch-rivals are set to meet in Dubai on 14 September in a group-stage clash. Singh feels it is wrong to share the field with Pakistan when soldiers are risking their lives to protect the country, insisting that national interest must come before any sporting contest.
'They need to understand what is important and what is not. This is as simple as that. For me, the soldier who stands on the border, whose family often doesn't get to see him, who sometimes sacrifices his life and never returns home, their sacrifice is so immense for all of us. Compared to that, this is a very small thing, that we can't skip playing one cricket match. It's a very small matter,' Harbhajan told the Times of India. The former spinner even referred to the government's position on the issue, stating that the Indian government has been very clear on cutting ties with Pakistan till cross-border terrorism exists.Harbhajan, one of India's best ever spinners, stressed that no individual should be placed above the country. In the recent World Championship of Legends (WCL) tournament, the India Champions skipped their group match against Pakistan after several players, including Shikhar Dhawan and Harbhajan Singh, pulled out of the game.'Our government has the same stance, blood and sweat cannot co-exist. It cannot be the case that there's fighting on the border, tensions between the two nations, and we go to play cricket. Until these big issues are resolved, cricket is a very small matter. The nation always comes first,' he added.India were due to meet Pakistan again in the semi-final on 31 July at Edgbaston, but the day before, the team's sponsor, EaseMyTrip, withdrew, saying, 'terror and cricket cannot go hand in hand.''Whatever our identity is, it's because of this country. Whether you are a player, an actor, or anyone else, no one is bigger than the nation. The country comes first, and the duties we owe to it must be fulfilled. Not playing a cricket match is nothing compared to the importance of the nation,' he commented. As it was finalised that India and Pakistan will lock horns again in the semi-finals, the Indian players stood firm in their stance and did not play, allowing Pakistan to advance to the final, where they were hammered by South Africa who won by nine wickets.- EndsMust Watch

Rare joy for Indian football as FC Goa sink Al Seeb of Oman to enter AFC Champions League 2 group stage

Amid despair, Indian football fans had reason to cheer on Wednesday as FC Goa defeated Oman's Al Seeb Club in the AFC Champions League 2 preliminary round. Indian Super League (ISL) side FC Goa gave Indian fans a moment to savour amid despair as they qualified for the AFC Champions League 2 group stage on Wednesday. Indian football is facing some tough times with uncertainty hovering over the upcoming season of the ISL side. The matter could soon reach the Supreme Court. However, the Indian football fans were given a reason to cheer by FC Goa on Wednesday as they defeated Oman's Al Seeb Club in the AFC Champions League 2 preliminary round. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD How FC Goa defeated Oman's Al Seeb Club Dejan Drazic (24') opened the scoring with a sublime chip before Javier Siverio (52') doubled the advantage for Goa. Al Seeb, the 2022 AFC Cup champions, threatened a comeback when Nasser Al-Rawahi (60') pulled one back, but the Gaurs held firm. FC Goa thus join fellow ISL team Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the continental tournament's group stage. The Mariners had secured a direct berth by clinching the 2024-25 Indian Super League Shield. More from Football Al Seeb began on the front foot, forcing early defensive heroics from Pol Moreno in just the second minute, while Zahir Al Aghbari's close-range effort was blocked. The home side took time to settle and could have broken the deadlock in the ninth minute when Drazic broke free on the left but with only the keeper to beat, the midfielder's soft shot was easily collected by Ahmed Al Rawahi. Al Rawahi was in the thick of things again for Al Seeb in the 23rd minute when his timely tackle opened up space to set up Abdul Aziz Al Muqbali, whose curling effort was parried away by FC Goa keeper Hrithik Tiwari. But FC Goa found the net a minute later as Borja Herrera's pinpoint long pass found Drazic on the left, with the midfielder evading Al Rawahi's challenge before delicately chipping the ball over Ahmed Al Khamisi and into the back of the net. The Indian Super League side stayed on top of things in the second half with Drazic outmuscling the Al Seeb defenders to surge into the box before forcing Al Rawahi to palm away his stinging shot in the 52nd minute. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The momentum saw FC Goa extend their lead moments later when Herrera's cross off a corner floated into the box perfectly for Siverio to rise above Al Rawahi for a headed finish. Al Seeb reduced the deficit at the hour mark through Nasser Al Rawahi's strike from close range off Ali Al Busaidi's cutback but that was to be it as FC Goa booked their spot in the Group Stage. They will now wait to discover their Group Stage opponents on Friday. With agency inputs

'We Were Supporting Him But...': Irfan Makes Stunning Claim About Rohit's Sydney Interview

Last Updated: Irfan Pathan has critiqued Rohit Sharma's Test performance, saying that he did not merit a spot in the XI despite his white-ball skills. Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has said that although the anchors and presenters were cordial with Rohit Sharma during his interview with the host broadcasters after he dropped himself from the Sydney Test, everyone knew he didn't deserve a place in the playing XI. In a teaser video released by Lallantop on Wednesday, Irfan acknowledged Rohit 's white-ball brilliance but highlighted his poor Test performances. Across eight Tests in 2024 against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia, Rohit scored only 164 runs, with a single fifty. Irfan pointed out that if Rohit were not the skipper, his performances could have seen him dropped from the playing XI. 'Rohit Sharma is an amazing player in white-ball cricket, but his average in Tests that year was six, so we said that if he was not the skipper, he wouldn't have had a place in the team and this is true," Irfan said. Amidst growing criticism and doubts over his Test future, Rohit was left out of the Sydney series finale. 'People say that we supported Rohit Sharma more than necessary. Of course, when someone comes to interview on your broadcasting channel, you will not misbehave with them, right? You have invited him, so you will behave politely," Irfan said. 'When Rohit came to interview, we were, of course, polite and we had to show that, because he was our guest. So that was connected and said that we were supporting him, but it was we who said…we had said that he should keep fighting, but that said, he shouldn't have had a place in the playing XI," Irfan added. Rohit's decision to sit out of the Sydney Test should not be misconstrued as a retirement decision, he had said. 'This decision is not a retirement decision. Nor am I going to take myself out of the game," Rohit said while speaking to Star Sports. But four months later, in May, he announced his retirement from Tests. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Reflecting on the award, Gill said, 'It feels great to be named the ICC Player of the Month for July. This time it holds a lot more significance since it has come for my performances during my first Test series as captain. The double ton in Birmingham is obviously something I'll cherish forever and will be one of the highlights of my tour to England.' Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Gill's numbers backed up his words. He was the standout performer in the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy, scoring 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40. July alone brought him 567 runs in three Tests at an average of 94.50, including three centuries and a career-best 269 at Edgbaston. That innings was not only a personal milestone but also the spark for India's comeback after losing the series opener in Leeds. Poll Do you believe Shubman Gill will continue to excel as India's captain in future series? Yes, definitely Probably Uncertain No, I don't think so His 430-run aggregate in Birmingham is one of the highest in Test history and the best by any visiting batter in England. Along the way, Gill surpassed Sunil Gavaskar 's record for most runs in a Test series as Indian captain and became the first Asian to score more than 700 runs in a series on English soil. While he had lean patches at Lord's and The Oval, his earlier contributions ensured India finished the series 2-2. The award is Gill's fourth, cementing his status as one of the game's most consistent and impactful players. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
