
OpenAI forum explores AI's economic impact and direction
Brynjolfsson, a leading voice on the economics of technological change, acknowledged the ongoing debate about whether AI is delivering tangible gains. "Right now, if you look at the official productivity statistics last quarter, it was 1.2 percent, which is not that impressive," he said. "In the 90s, it was more than twice as high. In the early 2000s, it was more than twice as high."
He argued that the current underwhelming figures are partly a result of how value is measured. "GDP measures a lot of things, but it doesn't do a good job of measuring things that have zero price," he said, citing digital goods like ChatGPT and Wikipedia, which generate value without costing users money.
The other key issue, Brynjolfsson suggested, is structural. "These general purpose technologies... require re-skilling, changing your business processes, figuring out better ways of using the technology," he explained. This delay in payoff is what he and others call the "productivity J-curve". However, he was cautiously optimistic: "I think it's happening a lot quicker this time."
Weil compared previous technological transitions—such as electricity and the internet—to the adoption of AI, noting that AI tools like ChatGPT require far less specialised knowledge. "You don't need to learn a new arcane coding language," he said. "It does... maybe you have to learn a little bit of prompting."
The conversation turned to the potential for AI to disrupt existing business structures by empowering new entrants. "Can they make the cycle go faster because they're actually able to punch above their weight class?" Weil asked. Brynjolfsson concurred but noted that America's rate of business dynamism is decreasing. "There are actually fewer startups... nationwide. And there's less movement between companies, there's less geographic mobility."
To measure AI's value beyond traditional economic indicators, Brynjolfsson described a new approach: "We've introduced a tool called GDP-B. The B stands for measuring the benefits rather than the costs." Using online choice experiments, his team estimates the consumer surplus of digital goods by asking participants how much compensation they would require to forgo a digital service for a time. "It's meant to be a representative market basket of what's in the economy," he said.
Both speakers also questioned how society currently benchmarks intelligence in AI. Weil noted that evaluations like GPQA aim to assess AI models by comparing them to talented graduate students. "But that's not necessarily the right way to think about some of these models," he said.
Brynjolfsson took the critique further: "With all due respect to my fellow humans, we are not the most general kind of intelligence." He advocated for benchmarks that measure intelligence beyond human-like capabilities. "There are all sorts of other kinds of intelligence... And it's not just an intellectual debate. It has to do with the direction of technology."
The discussion also touched on the risks of over-centralising AI. Brynjolfsson warned of a future where a single AI system might dominate information and decision-making: "Maybe that will be more efficient if you have enough processing power. But... the humans wouldn't have a lot of bargaining power."
Weil countered by highlighting the fragmented nature of data access. "No public model... will have access to all of the data that's relevant to solve the totality of problems... The vast majority of the world's data is private." This, he argued, makes it likely that multiple models will always coexist.
In discussing trust in AI, Brynjolfsson offered a candid anecdote: "There was an article... where they had three treatments: the human-only, the AI-only, and the doctor plus the AI. And... the doctor plus the AI did worse than the AI alone." He attributed this to current systems being insufficiently interpretable. "They have to be able to trust and know... if the AI system just says, 'cut off the patient's left leg,' and the doctor's like, 'why?'... it's got to explain all the reasoning."
As the event closed, both speakers emphasised the importance of supporting innovation through infrastructure like OpenAI's API. "Every time we drop the price and offer more intelligence, people can solve more problems," said Weil.
Brynjolfsson emphasised the same idea: "Some people derisively call these things wrappers... Actually, I think that's where a ton of the value is going to be coming... customised for a particular vertical."
In sum, the discussion underscored that while AI holds the potential to dramatically shift productivity and economic structures, its full impact will depend on how it is adopted, measured, and integrated with human capabilities.

The AI giant has faced increased competition, amid growing concerns about AI's impact on mental health and future jobs. GPT-5, which launched across OpenAI's free and paid tiers, will make ChatGPT better at tasks like writing, coding and answering health-related questions, OpenAI claimed. It also promised to prevent the popular chatbot from hallucinating as often and deceiving users when it could not answer a question. New models like GPT-5 are important, because they determine how services like ChatGPT function and the new capabilities they will support, making them an essential part of its future direction. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said GPT-5 was a "significant step" on the path toward artificial general intelligence, a hypothetical point at which AI can match human-level thinking. "GPT-4 felt like you're kind of talking to a college student," Altman said. "GPT-5 is the first time that it really feels like talking to an expert in any topic, like a PhD-level expert." In addition to ChatGPT, the new model was also available for developers who built tools and services based on OpenAI's technology. Software development was a big area of focus for GPT-5. Altman said the model could generate "an entire piece of software" for you - a practice colloquially known as "vibe coding". In a demonstration, OpenAI showed how ChatGPT could create a website for learning French, after typing in a prompt asking it to do so. Altman said use cases like this would be a "defining part of the new GPT-5 era". GPT-5 had arrived, as coders increasingly used AI to handle certain parts of their job. Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg previously said he expected about half the company's code to be written by AI next year. Twenty to 30 percent of Microsoft's code is written by AI, chief executive Satya Nadella said. Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei sparked fears over AI impacting jobs in May, when he said he believed the technology could lead to a spike in unemployment. OpenAI's new model also hit on another concern around the use of AI - it could be deceptive, as research from Anthropic and AI research firm Apollo Research had shown, or provide incorrect information. Previously, the system would say it could do a task that it could not complete or refer to an image that was not there, said OpenAI safety research lead Alex Beutel. With GPT-5, the company said it had trained the model to be honest in these types of scenarios. GPT-5 would also be more careful about how it answered questions to queries that could be potentially harmful. While the company did not provide a specific example of how that would look in practice, it said the model would aim to give an answer that was helpful "within the constraints of remaining safe", which may involve giving high-level answers that are not too specific. The update came after concerns were raised about people becoming too reliant on AI assistants, particularly emotionally, raising questions about the technology's impact on mental wellbeing. A man in Idaho, for example, told CNN that ChatGPT sparked a spiritual awakening for him, after he began discussing topics like religion with the chatbot. His wife said it put a lot of strain on their family. OpenAI is widely considered the frontrunner in AI, thanks to ChatGPT, which is now on track to hit 700 million weekly active users, but the competition continues to grow, especially among younger users. Research from web analytics company SimilarWeb suggested AI search app Perplexity, DeepSeek, Anthropic's Claude and xAI's Grok all had higher app usage among 18-34 year olds. Zuckerberg is attempting to snatch up top-tier AI talent with reported multimillion dollar pay packages to get ahead in the AI race. The launch also came at a period of growth and expansion for AI. The tech giant now played a bigger role in education and the government in the United States, recently striking a partnership with classroom software provider Instructure and launching a study mode for ChatGPT. OpenAI had also worked with the Trump administration on projects like the US$500 billion ($NZ840 billion) AI infrastructure project known as Stargate. Minister of Immigration The Government is introducing two new seasonal visa pathways to help New Zealand businesses access the workers they need during peak periods, while also prioritising jobs for New Zealanders. 'We know the success of our seasonal industries is critical to growing the economy. These new visas will make it easier for employers to bring back experienced seasonal workers and to fill short-term roles that are hard to fully staff locally,' Immigration Minister Erica Stanford says. 'We are making sure businesses can access the right people at the right time, while also protecting opportunities for Kiwis.' The Global Workforce Seasonal Visa (GWSV) is an up to three-year visa for highly experienced seasonal workers in roles such as rural contracting, sheep scanning, winemaking, and snow instruction. It enables skilled workers to return for subsequent seasons on the same visa. Visa holders will need to spend a minimum of three months out of every 12 months offshore before returning to New Zealand. The Peak Seasonal Visa (PSV) is a visa of up to seven months for short-term seasonal roles such as meat and seafood processing, calf-rearing, and wool handling. Visa holders will have to have at least one season of previous relevant experience and people will need to leave New Zealand for at least four months before the visa can be renewed. For visa over three months there will be a new requirement for insurance with health coverage. Employers will be required to advertise these roles, as well as engage with MSD, to ensure that New Zealand workers continue to be prioritised. 'These visas are designed to reflect the realities of seasonal work and the diverse range of skill levels involved. They'll help fill critical roles in industries where employers struggle to find enough New Zealand workers at peak times. From ski instructors guiding first-timers down the slopes to wine makers helping create next year's vintage, these visas are designed to keep seasonal industries humming.' 'These changes are part of our plan to deliver smart, flexible and nuanced immigration solutions to help grow our economy,' Ms Stanford says.
