Operation Vala Umgodi: Zimbabwe names nationals who died in Stilfontein
The operation, which unfolded in Stilfontein, in the North West Province of South Africa, saw dozens of illegal miners trapped underground at a disused mine.
By the time authorities ended the standoff in January, many people had died, most likely from starvation, according to human rights groups.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that 20 of those who perished were Zimbabweans. Many of them had reportedly gone to South Africa in search of better economic opportunities.
'The Zimbabwe Republic Police has received a request through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade from authorities in South Africa to assist in the location and identification of relatives of Zimbabweans who sadly perished in a mine during Operation Vala Umgodi recently,' national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.
'The Zimbabwe Republic Police releases the names of the victims who died during the operation in South Africa. The bodies are yet to be claimed by the next of kin.'

Another 8 undocumented immigrants meet their match in eMalahleni
Police officers deployed under Operation Vala Umgodi have arrested eight illegal immigrants during a stop-and-search operation along the N4 Road near a local mall on Thursday. Arrested on August 14, the suspects, aged between 22 and 34, allegedly failed to produce valid documentation allowing them to be in South Africa and were charged with Contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa. Malema tells Zimbabweans to find work in their home country
EFF leader Julius Malema has called on Zimbabweans to seek employment in their own country, saying South Africans should be prioritised for job opportunities in municipalities. Speaking to party supporters at an EFF rally in Seshego, Limpopo, Malema urged locals to fight against tenders allegedly being awarded to foreigners. Polokwane mayor John Mpe was accused of awarding tenders to foreign-owned companies, including one linked to municipality manager Thuso Nemugumoni's alleged Zimbabwean partner. Mpe has denied wrongdoing, saying there is nothing wrong with awarding tenders to foreign-owned companies as long as they follow the law. Malema said: 'We don't disagree that Zimbabweans should be given jobs, but they should be given jobs in their municipalities in Harare and other areas so we have opportunities to get jobs in our municipalities.' Undocumented migrant arrested for posing as Tshwane employee
An undocumented migrant was arrested after posing for more than a decade as an employee of the Rietvlei Water Treatment Plant in Tshwane. The suspect, known as 'Prince,' allegedly used the stolen identity of Mohlaume Geoffrey Mamabolo to secure a municipal job in 2012. City spokesperson Selby Bokaba said the scam only came to light when the Department of Home Affairs flagged inconsistencies. 'His fingerprints did not match the records in the Home Affairs database, raising suspicions that he might be a foreign national,' Bokaba explained. The discovery followed a probe by the city's Forensic Division into payroll irregularities, which aimed to uncover fraudulent employment practices within municipal structures. Authorities moved swiftly once suspicions were confirmed. 'In the early hours of Friday, Forensic Services, supported by TMPD members, confronted 'Prince' at the water treatment plant,' Bokaba said. The man allegedly failed to explain the discrepancies in his identity documents, nor could he provide details of his upbringing or schooling. According to Bokaba, the suspect confessed that he was not Mr Mamabolo. He further revealed that an individual in Polokwane supplied him with the fraudulent identity document years earlier. The man has since been charged with identity theft and contravention of the Immigration Act. He is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday. City officials confirmed that the case forms part of a larger effort to expose ghost employees and strengthen oversight within Tshwane's payroll system. 'This operation forms part of a broader fraud detection review of the city's payroll system aimed at rooting out 'ghost employees' and verifying the validity of all employee identity numbers,' Bokaba stated.
