Venmo adds debit card perks, checkout options in push to catch rival Cash App
Venmo, long known for helping friends split dinner bills and birthday gifts, is jumping into the heart of consumer commerce.
The PayPal-owned platform on Wednesday rolled out several updates designed to move beyond peer-to-peer transfers, transforming Venmo into a more robust fintech tool for everyday spending.
The changes include upgraded rewards for Venmo Debit Mastercard users, expanded checkout options at major retailers, and a new brand campaign aimed at positioning Venmo, which has more than 64 million monthly active users, as a full-service commerce platform.
"We're transforming from a payments app into a full-service commerce experience for users to spend their balance on everything, in-store and online," said Diego Scotti, EVP and general manager of PayPal's Consumer Group.
It's a shift that sees Venmo trying to catch up to rivals in a key fintech growth area and capture more of the daily consumer wallet.
Venmo's debit card penetration is still in the single digits, compared to 44% of users for Cash App, according to Bernstein. And while Venmo debit card transaction volume totaled $13 billion, Cash App's reached a massive $152 billion in 2024.
PayPal has doubled down on competing with platforms like Cash App. On a recent earnings call, PayPal CEO Alex Chriss said more than 45% of U.S. branded checkout now runs through the company's upgraded experience — a figure the company expects to climb further as it expands across Europe.
He also pointed to strong debit card momentum, with nearly two million people using a PayPal or Venmo debit card for the first time last quarter, a 90% increase from the year prior.
Venmo is accelerating on multiple fronts but still has areas to improve.
Revenue grew 20% year over year, though PayPal didn't break out a dollar figure. Total payment volume for Venmo increased 10% to $75.9 billion. Transaction volume for Pay with Venmo climbed 50%, and monthly active users of the Venmo debit card rose about 40%.
Chriss has made it a priority to better monetize acquisitions like Braintree and Venmo. Major brands including DoorDash, Starbucks and Ticketmaster now accept Venmo at checkout, a move that further integrates the app into daily consumer spending.
Venmo and Cash App have both lost share in U.S. peer-to-peer payments over the past year as Zelle surged to 66% of market volume, up from 55% in 2019. Venmo now holds 19%, down from 21% last year, signaling the pressure to expand beyond basic transfers.
Venmo is banking on its brand recognition, social roots, and user loyalty to drive adoption among younger, mobile-first consumers.
The updated Venmo Debit Card now offers 15% cash back at major retailers including Sephora, Walmart, Lyft, McDonald's, and Walgreens, with offers activated directly in the app. Cardholders can also tap to pay in stores using their mobile wallets, make purchases internationally without foreign transaction fees, and enable auto-reloads when balances drop.
In parallel, Venmo is expanding its presence at checkout.
The ability to pay with Venmo is now live at brands like TikTok Shop, Uber, Instacart, and Domino's. The company hopes this growing merchant network will further entrench Venmo as a go-to payment method—especially at a time when consumers are seeking both convenience and rewards.

Ethereum Blockchain Is Useful Technology That 'Deserves Love,' Bernstein Says
The Ethereum blockchain's unique selling point is its role as a decentralized computer, Wall Street broker Bernstein said in a research report Monday. Inflows into ether ETH exchange-traded funds are increasing as institutions become aware of the network's value proposition, the broker said. The blockchain "deserves love" as it is useful technology, according to the report, acknowledging that ether's larger peer bitcoin benefits from its perception as a store of value, or digital gold. "Interesting blockchain use cases such as stablecoins and tokenization are native to Ethereum, analysts led by Gautam Chhugani wrote, adding that the network enjoys "maximum market share" in these areas. Companies that use stablecoin technology are paying transaction fees to the Ethereum blockchain, the report noted. As institutions become more aware of the value inherent in the network, ether ETF inflows have begun to pick up, the report noted. Ether ETF inflows reached $815 million over the last 20 days, with year-to-date net inflows turning positive at $658 million, Bernstein said. "The narrative around value accrual of public blockchain networks is at a critical inflection point, " the broker said, and this is "starting to reflect in investor interest in ETH ETF inflows."Sign in to access your portfolio

Two more Welsh politicians defect to Nigel Farage's Reform UK
Reform leader Nigel Farage has used a keynote speech in Wales to announced that two more Welsh councillors have defected. Speaking in Port Talbot, he announced independent councillors Andrew Barry and David Hughes, both members of Merthyr Tydfil council, have joined Reform UK. They were welcomed to the stage during a speech that has given his first glimpses of policies ahead of the election. Mr Farage said the party would allow coal mining again in Wales and says its long term plan is to "reopen the Port Talbot steelworks". Cllr Barry, who has had the cabinet brief for finance, says he has seen "waste" in the system during his time. He said: "The people making the decisions on those hundreds of thousands of pounds are unelected members of the council. You can follow live updates from the speech here. Meanwhile David Hughes, who had previously had the housing and social services brief, spoke of "waste" within councils. "I've come over to Reform because there's so much waste where money is being spent, we need to get into procurement to make sure money is being spent correctly". "It sounds like every Welsh council needs a DOGE," Mr Farage joked. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here The most recent poll for Wales suggests Reform is in line to take its first seats in the Senedd at the election in May 2026. Its only representation in Wales at the moment is with councillors, but a YouGov/Barn Cymru poll which asked people their voting intention for the Welsh Parliament in May put Reform UK in second with 25% of the vote. They were only behind Plaid Cymru who were projected to get 30% of the vote and ahead of Labour's 18%. You can read that here. In an opinion piece for WalesOnline, the party leader has given his first glimpses of policies ahead of the election. Mr Farage has said the party would allow coal mining again in Wales and says its long term plan is to "reopen the Port Talbot steelworks". The steelworks, owned by Tata, have not closed but its remaining blast furnaces were closed in 2024, with work now ongoing to build an electric arc furnace which will recycle previously-used steel. Thousands of jobs are being lost as part of the change. The Indian-owned company said the blast furnaces were at the end of their operational lives and too expensive to replace. The Port Talbot steelworks were, the company said, losing £1m a day before the blast furnaces were turned off. Reform UK say it would "use Welsh Development Grants to support real industry. We'll redirect economic funding from consultants and NGOs to actual factory floors, machinery, and industrial jobs in places like Llanelli, Shotton, and Ebbw Vale". Nigel Farage has also said the party would also set up "regional technical colleges" for people to have a "path into proper trade". The party would also, it says, stop any building being used for asylum seeker accommodation, end funding to the Welsh Refugee Council and scrap the Welsh Government's "Nation of Sanctuary". It also vowed to set up an Elon Musk style department to cut costs. "A Reform UK Senedd will also save hundreds of millions each year by cutting bureaucracy, waste and bad management." "The establishment of Welsh DOGE will help us uncover where there is woke and wasteful spending and we will make sure those funds are redirected to frontline services," Mr Farage pledges.

PagSeguro Digital Ltd. (PAGS): A Bear Case Theory
We came across a bearish thesis on PagSeguro Digital Ltd. (PAGS) on Quipus Capital's Substack. In this article, we will summarize the bears' thesis on PAGS. PagSeguro Digital Ltd. (PAGS)'s share was trading at $8.78 as of 6th June. PAGS's trailing and forward P/E were 7.23 and 6.56 respectively according to Yahoo Finance. Photo by Clay Banks on Unsplash PagSeguro Digital Ltd. (PAGS) operates as a Brazilian payment processor with a core business model built around receivables discounting rather than payment processing itself. While many assume that PAGS earns margins on payment transactions, the reality is that most of the take rate is paid out in interchange and transaction fees, leaving processing effectively commoditized. The real profit engine is in advancing payments to merchants on credit card sales in exchange for a 2% monthly discount fee, amounting to annualized rates of 25–30%, with minimal risk, as receivables are guaranteed by banks or card networks. This business is especially viable among micro and small merchants, who lack access to traditional credit. However, the company's growth is constrained by a saturated market; PAGS now grows in line with Brazil's GDP plus inflation, and its receivables remain capped at roughly 30–35% of TPV. Further, the looming launch of PIX Parcelado threatens to disrupt the receivables model, allowing banks to offer credit-based instant payments that bypass PAGS entirely on the lucrative discounting side. Although PAGS could theoretically expand into other lending products, it lacks both the scale and risk infrastructure to compete with Brazil's established banks. In a best-case scenario, PAGS maintains current spreads, leverages its low-risk balance sheet, and grows EPS via share buybacks. At a 7x P/E, the stock could deliver a 14% return from buybacks alone, with 5–7% BRL-denominated growth on top. Yet, investors must weigh this against significant structural risk, particularly from PIX, and limited runway for long-term business expansion. Previously, we summarized a on Block, Inc., highlighting its evolution into a vertically integrated fintech ecosystem spanning consumer finance, business services, and AI-powered infrastructure, supported by scale advantages in Cash App and Square, improved profitability, and underappreciated assets like Tidal. Together, these theses capture a broader fintech divide: one leaning into innovation and ecosystem synergy to unlock durable value (Block), the other constrained by structural ceilings and rising platform risk (PagSeguro). PagSeguro Digital Ltd. (PAGS) is not on our list of the 30 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds. As per our database, 29 hedge fund portfolios held PAGS at the end of the first quarter which was 36 in the previous quarter. While we acknowledge the risk and potential of PAGS as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and have limited downside risk.
