Three-Team NBA Mock Trade Allows Lakers to Contend, Kings to Rebuild
According to a recent report, the Sacramento Kings are expected to shop DeMar DeRozan on the trade market. If the Kings, under a new front office regime, are serious about parting ways with their veteran talent and rebuilding, then trading DeRozan isn't enough, and Domantas Sabonis will need to be dealt away as well.
With three seasons left on his contract and as the best rebounder in the league, Sabonis would trail only Giannis Antetokounmpo as the most sought-after player on the trade block.

The Los Angeles Lakers, after their first-round exit, will likely look for a player who can both maximize the end of LeBron James' prime and be Luka Doncic's long-term running mate, and Sabonis fits the bill.
He won't come cheap, but a three-team trade could allow the Kings to rebuild, the Lakers to contend in the West, and the Memphis Grizzlies to bounce back after two disappointing seasons in a row.

NBA Mock Trade Checks All the Boxes
Assuming that the Kings are interested in a full-on rebuild, adding as much draft capital while shedding as much salary will be the priority. The Grizzlies, with Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., can compete in the West but could use an added star (or two!), and the Lakers need a paint presence and a scorer who is not that ball-dominant.

While this mock trade certainly makes the Kings less competitive, the massive haul of young talent and draft capital would make it worth it in the long run.

Kings receive: Rui Hachimura, Dorian Finney-Smith, Jarred Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kelber, Dalton Knecht, 2027 first-round pick (via MEM), 2029 first-round pick (via MEM), 2031 first-round pick (via LAL), 2031 first-round pick (via MEM)
Lakers receive: Domantas Sabonis, Desmond Bane
Grizzlies receive: DeMar DeRozan, Austin Reaves
The Lakers get Sabonis for Knecht and a pick, which is what they were going to pay for Mark Williams during the season. They do have to give up Reaves, but replace him with Desmond Bane, who is less talented, but would fit in well with James and Doncic.

The Grizzlies, meanwhile, add a high-level scorer in DeRozan and a fringe All-Star guard next to Morant. A starting five of Morant, Reaves, DeRozan, Jackson Jr., and Zach Edey is pretty solid, and they get to keep key depth pieces as well.
The Kings, meanwhile, get to shed the salaries of Finney-Smith, Kelber, Vincent, and Hachimura next offseason when they are free agents, and have only one more season after that of paying LaVine. Once LaVine is off the books, the Kings will have three first-round picks in 2027, two in 2029, and two in 2031, as well as a single pick in both 2028 and 2030, as well as plenty of cap space.
It's not a fast rebuild in Sacramento, but fans of the Kings have developed more patience than any other fan base in the league.
Some have criticized Sabonis' potential fit and contract in Los Angeles, and his lack of defensive prowess is certainly a concern, although his offensive fit next to Doncic in a post-James era would be pretty seamless.

While losing Reaves is a massive loss, the long-term viability of him in Hollywood is questionable, anyway, and replacing him with Bane, who is one of the best shooters in the league, is a pretty solid deal.
This Kings' roster is not going to compete with their current construction, and blowing it all up for the best roster possible is hard to pass up, especially when Knecht is included in the deal, rounding out the wings long-term next to Keegan Murray.

2025 NBA Finals: The incredible Paul George trades that turned the Pacers and Thunder into title contenders
As it turns out, all you needed to do to reach the 2025 NBA Finals was trade Paul George. Remarkably, this year's Eastern Conference champion Indiana Pacers and Western Conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder were both built from assets each team received in exchange for dealing George. How the Pacers built from trading Paul George Indiana selected George with the 10th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. He made four All-Star teams for the Pacers, leading them to a pair of conference finals appearances, before informing the franchise in 2017 that he was planning to sign elsewhere — preferably with the Los Angeles Lakers — in free agency. Advertisement Not wanting to lose George for nothing, Indiana dealt him to the Thunder on July 6, 2017, in exchange for a 25-year-old Victor Oladipo and a 21-year-old Domantas Sabonis. Both Oladipo and Sabonis developed into All-Stars under Indiana's watch, though as a tandem they peaked in a pair of first-round playoff exits. In return, Indiana received Caris LeVert and a pair of second-round draft picks. One of those second-rounders became the 32nd overall pick in the 2023 draft, which the Pacers packaged, along with the No. 29 overall pick in the same draft, for a 2024 first-round draft pick from ... the Thunder. That is roughly a third of Indiana's entire roster, half of its rotation and both of its leaders. In July 2019, though, the Los Angeles Clippers came calling with an offer Oklahoma City could not refuse. The Clippers were trying to sign Kawhi Leonard in free agency, but the two-time Finals MVP wanted a star partner in L.A., so the organization went about the business of trying to pry George from the Thunder. Advertisement OKC executive Sam Presti squeezed the Clippers for everything he could, acquiring Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Danilo Gallinari and the rights to a handful of first-round draft picks in exchange for George. As if recouping Gilgeous-Alexander, this year's MVP, were not enough, one of those picks — the No. 12 selection in 2022 — became Jalen Williams, who has developed into an All-Star for Oklahoma City. Much of the rest of the package from the Clippers is tied up in this year's draft, as the Thunder own pick Nos. 15, 24 and 44 in June, all from assets they received in the George deal. Oklahoma City can use those selections to replenish whomever they lose from their rising salary costs over the next couple of years. Between Gilgeous-Alexander, Williams and whoever is still to come, the Thunder have built from George a budding dynasty. First, though, they must get through what they traded to acquire George from Indiana.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks will play a preseason exhibition game in Las Vegas. This is a decision made not by the NBA, but by the two teams that completed one of the most controversial trades in sports history just months ago when the Mavericks dealt Luka Dončić to the Lakers. Advertisement Since that trade, the Lakers have flamed out of the first round of the playoffs, and the Mavericks have won the NBA Draft lottery. Dallas will presumably select Duke phenom Cooper Flagg, who will be immediately be handed the torch that Dončić carried as the team's franchise player and long-term hope for championship success. The Lakers confirmed the existence of the game on Monday. And to be clear, this is a game that both teams chose to schedule, as is custom with the NBA preseason. As The Athletic explained in a feature on the NBA preseason last fall: "Teams arrange their own schedules, pick their own opponents and have their own reasons for doing so. ... There are few rules for the preseason. They don't even play games if they don't want to. The NBA doesn't mandate a minimum number of games, just that teams can't play more than six each year. The rest is up to the teams themselves." When will the Lakers and Mavericks play in a game that actually counts? That's yet to be determined. The NBA schedule generally isn't set until August. Until then, both teams will maintain their collective buzz amid the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip.

Angels slugger Mike Trout mashes first home run since returning from injury
Mike Trout is back in the lineup for the Los Angeles Angels and seeing him do what he does best — hitting home runs — is a welcome sight for the team's fans. Trout hit his first homer since returning to the lineup after a 10-day injury list stint due to his left knee. The three-time MVP launched a three-run shot against the Boston Red Sox in Game 1 of the Angels' series at Fenway Park, his first since April 25. It's Trout's ninth dinger on the season, and it comes with the Angels after having dropped two of three over the weekend against the Cleveland Guardians. But the positive development was seeing Trout back in the lineup for both the Friday and Saturday games in Cleveland before sitting out the Sunday finale. Prior to going on the IL on April 30, Trout had been hitting a career-low .179. Since his return, he's had six hits in the four games he's played — including Monday's 454-ft homer. The Angels are bringing their star hitter back slowly. Trout has yet to play in right field since coming back from the IL and is expected to be the designated hitter for the time being. Once the team returns to Anaheim, manager Ron Washington will assess when the 11-time All-Star go back to playing defense. The Angels were able to keep pace with Trout sidelined, which included an eight-game winning streak composed of series sweeps of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Athletics.
