Boxing world left fuming over robbery after Manny Pacquiao fight

News.com.au20-07-2025
The boxing world has been left seething after Manny Pacquiao's return to the ring ended in a majority draw.
The 46-year-old earned a shot against 30-year-old WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios thanks to his protected ranking.
While many believed the champ would have proved too strong for the hall of famer, it was the elder statesman who showed he still has what it takes at the top level.
Pacquaio had his opponent scurrying around the ring as his nimble punches came in bunches over the majority of the 12 rounds.
As the final bell rang, the boxing world held its breath as the judges submitted their cards. It was when they were read out that outrage took over.
One judge scored the bout 115-113 to Barrios while the remaining two judges had it 114-114 with the fight ending in a majority draw. It means Barrios retains his WBC title.
Boxing fans watching on believed it was Pacquiao who should have had his hand raised and it wasn't long before social media was flooded with anger.
Shakur Stevenson wrote: 'Decision was crazy.'
Journalist Dan Rafael wrote: 'A draw. Barrios retains the WBC welterweight title. That's just absolutely awful. Beyond awful. Complete f***eration.'
DAZN' s Steven Muehlhausen wrote: 'This is where these commissions need to make the judges available to speak after fights. Scores likes this are inexcusable when the fight was fairly easy to score.'
Another on X wrote: 'Get f***ed that's a disgusting scorecard Manny Pacquiao has just been f***ing robbed he won that fight 115-113 get lost.'
Speaking after the fight, Pacquaio said he will be stepping back into the ring with Barrios agreeing the duo should run it back.
Earlier on the card, there was huge drama in Tim Tszyu's rematch with Sebastian Fundora.
The Aussie was knocked to the ground in the opening round of the word title rematch and never recovered despite landing some savage blows of his own.
The 30-year-old confirmed after the chaotic scenes in the ring that the decision for him to quit on his stool had been made by the whole team.
'I tried to give it everything but I just couldn't do it,' Tszyu said after the fight.

Maya Joint eliminated from Canadian Open by American McCartney Kessler

Australia's Maya Joint has pushed 28th seed McCartney Kessler to the limit before losing in three sets at the Canadian Open. The 19-year-old Aussie came flying out of the blocks in Montreal on Wednesday, local time, taking the first set, before the American bounced back strongly to claim the next two for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory. Little separated the players throughout the match, which threw up 14 break points for each. Joint converted three of those chances, while her American opponent managed four breaks. Joint had been hoping to back up her first-round upset of local favourite Leylah Fernandez, the world No.24 who was fresh off claiming the biggest title of her career on Sunday, the Washington Open. Despite the loss, Joint has shown she is finding top form ahead of the year's final major, the US Open, which kicks off in New York on August 24. Joint is already a two-time WTA title winner this year and will be looking to start making a real impact at grand slam level. She reached the second round at Flushing Meadows in 2024, but is yet to progress past the first round of the other majors. Australia's only remaining competitor in the women's singles, 15th-seeded Daria Kasatkina, plays her third-round match against 24th seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine on Thursday. In other second-round results on Wednesday, six-time grand slam champion Iga Swiatek was all business in a 6-3, 6-1 demolition of China's Guo Hanyu. The Polish superstar, seeded second in Montreal, is hot off her record-breaking win in the Wimbledon singles final, where she served up two "donuts" to American Amanda Anisimova. "I think I played a really solid match today," Swiatek said. "Playing the first match on hard court after a pretty long break from the surface is always tricky, so I'm happy that I just focused on myself, adjusted to the conditions and played well." American third seed and two-time defending champion Jessica Pegula remained on track for a title hat-trick by beating Maria Sakkari of Greece 7-5, 6-4. Four-time major champ Naomi Osaka of Japan upset 13th-seeded Russian Liudmila Samsonova 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 to continue her impressive return to tennis after taking a maternity break. Sixth-seeded American Madison Keys was dominant over Germany's Laura Siegemund 6-2, 6-1. AAP/AP

Liam Paro fight: Paro to move up to welterweight, turning down super-lightweight world title eliminator

Liam Paro will give up his IBF super-lightweight world title eliminator fight with Mexico's Lindolfo Delgado and move up to welterweight. After making the 140-pound (63.5kg) limit for 10 straight years, Code Sports understands the Queenslander is now struggling to make the weight class and will move up a division. Paro is ranked fifth at super-lightweight with The Ring, and is in the top five with the WBO, IBF and WBC. The move to 147 pounds (66.7kg) means he won't join Kostya Tszyu in becoming a two-time super-lightweight world champion, but opens up the possibility of big-money bouts against the likes of Rolando 'Rolly' Romero, Brian Norman Jr and Ryan Garcia. Liam Paro destroyed Johnathan Navarro. Picture: No Limit Boxing The other big names in the mix are WBC welterweight world champion Mario Barrios, who held onto his title with a draw against the great Manny Pacquiao in the headline fight of Tim Tszyu's loss to Sebastian Fundora in Las Vegas. Paro has even spoken about one day facing modern day great Pacquiao at some stage, telling Fox Sports, 'I'd love that fight. 'Manny, he's one of my favourite fighters. And to have his name on my resume would be something special.' The move up to one of boxing's glamour divisions is in line with turning 'The Prodigy' into Australia's next PPV boxing star, alongside Tim and Nikita Tszyu. A Cowboys diehard, there have even been preliminary talks of having Paro fight in Las Vegas on the same weekend that North Queensland play Newcastle in the 2026 season opener in Sin City. Mario Barrios (L) and Manny Pacquiao (R) fought to a draw in their WBC welterweight world title fight in Las Vegas. Picture:Paro most recently scored a thunderous fifth round stoppage win over Johnathan Navarro in his Australian homecoming in Cairns in June. That bout was his first on home soil since his first round knockout of Brock Jarvis in Brisbane in 2022. Since then, the 29-year-old knocked out the highly touted Montana Love before scoring one of the biggest boilovers of 2024 with a unanimous decision world title win over Subriel Matias. He relinquished the IBF world title in a split decision defeat to slick American Richardson Hitchens in December before his Far North Queensland homecoming in June. Paro had been linked to super-lightweight bouts with Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz, Romero and Delgado, but his team is understood to see more of a future at welterweight. Paro has been loosely pencilled in to fight again in September. Brendan Bradford Content producer Brendan Bradford is a sports writer for CODE Sports. Jordan Petaia set for NFL LA Chargers vs Detroit Lions Hall of Fame match

Petaia's remarkable transition to the NFL is now poised to play out live to Australian audiences on Kayo and ESPN, with the LA Chargers' match against the Lions to be shown on Friday from 10am. Code Sports understands Petaia will be given snaps during the game in the tight-end position he has trained in since joining the Chargers in April. The match in Ohio will be the Hall of Fame game, which marks the start of the pre-season and is the first televised NFL game since the Super Bowl in February, when the Philadelphia Eagles thumped Kansas City Chiefs to win the championship. If Petaia takes the field, he will create history as the first former Wallaby to do so. The 25-year-old has impressed Chargers officials with his speed and strength, although he has much to learn about the finer arts of tight-end play, given it is one of the toughest positions on the field. Chiefs superstar Travis Kelce and Patriots legend Rob Gronkowski are among the most famous tight ends of recent times, excelling at getting into clear space amid heavy traffic, making powerful runs, and also blocking for other teammates in offence. Petaia, who played 31 Tests for Australia and in two World Cups, decided to follow his childhood dream of playing in the NFL last year. He signed up for their International Pathway Program, and after strong performances in training camps on the Gold Coast and then Florida, he was picked up by the Chargers. While Petaia is set to feature, star quarterback Justin Herbert will not. Coach Jim Harbaugh revealed the $400 million man will be rested with former first round draft pick Trey Lance to start. The Chargers and Lions were both eliminated in the playoffs last season and will be looking to make an early statement, before the NFL season gets underway in September. Petaia follows in the footsteps of other cross-code Australian athletes that have made the switch to the NFL, most notably NRL stars Jarryd Hayne and Valentine Holmes, and AFL players Sav Rocca and Chris Bryan. After signing with the Chargers three months ago, Petaia told Code Sports he was 'just worried about doing my best every day and training hard.' 'You do what you can to put your best foot forward, whatever happens, happens. 'My mindset is to leave no stone unturned, and train harder.' Rugby Union If all Australia cared about was rugby, the Wallabies would be unstoppable. Simon McLoughlin reveals why shouty Lions fans should thank their stars they're not living in an alternate universe. World Donald Trump is threatening to sink a $5.67bn stadium deal unless Washington's NFL team drops its 'ridiculous' Commanders moniker.
