A CLOSE relative has been arrested following the brutal murder of an 83-year-old blind grandmother and the attempted murder of her daughter, who is in critical condition after a violent attack in Phoenix.
The suspect was arrested by Phoenix detectives, in Amaoti, north of Durban last night.
Prem Balram, of Reaction Unit SA, said detectives from the Phoenix SAPS had requested statements this morning (Wednesday) from his team.
The critically injured woman had identified the person responsible for her injuries, while paramedics were trying to stabilise her on scene, said Balram.

Kamatchie Naicker, 83, and her daughter, Shirley Appalsamy, 63, were repeatedly stabbed with a large butcher's knife during a brutal attack at their Westham, Phoenix, home on Monday evening. A small kitchen knife was also found at the scene.
Naicker, a grandmother of nine, sustained multiple stab wounds to her face and body. She was declared dead by Reaction Unit South Africa paramedics, who arrived at the home.
Appalsamy, a mother of two, was also stabbed multiple times and her throat slit. She was resuscitated before being taken to a hospital and remains in a critical condition.

According to information Meluleki disappeared at around 22:00 between Stoffberg and Belfast Fourways, after being dropped off by a white Kia Picanto. • Hendrina Police are pleading with the public for assistance in locating Johannes Sibanyoni (45). Described as tall and light in complexion, Sibanyoni was last seen on May 25 wearing a blue shirt, brown trousers brown jacket, grey shoes and a black hat. The help of the SAPS and community members who tirelessly work around the clock and being on the lookout is commendable. They play an important role in the investigation processes. The South African Police Service (Saps) say they are investigating three counts of murder after three unidentified bodies were found in an open veld in Johannesburg. It is understood that the bodies were found in Tshepisong Phase 6 on Thursday. Bodies Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the victims, all in their early twenties, were found dead at the scene. 'A fourth person, believed to have survived the attack, is currently at large. The motive behind the attack is currently unknown. Police investigations are underway. No arrest has been made yet'. ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they responded to multiple calls of a shooting incident in the Hillary area on Wednesday at about 7:45pm. 'On arrival, paramedics found Saps already in attendance and were shown into a house. Paramedics found two people believed to be a mother in her sixties and a male believed to be her son in his thirties, who had sustained gunshot wounds to their heads. 'Stellenbosch police registered a murder case for investigation following a shooting incident on Monday evening, 9 June 2025, at about 20:00, in Vineyard Street, Kayamandi, in which a 59-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded. 'Police members attended to the crime scene, where they found the victim with a gunshot wound to his throat. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.
