Brother duo from Bihar caught in Surat for getting Aadhaar forged to get accommodation, land job

Surat police have nabbed a man and his younger brother — both natives of Bihar — for allegedly procuring Aadhaar cards with a fake name to get a house and land a job at a diamond factory in Surat.
While the elder brother was produced before a court on Tuesday and sent to a two-day police remand, the younger one, a juvenile, was sent to a children's remand home in Katargam.
Special Operations Group officials had on Monday evening reached a flat on the third floor of Shiv Heritage Apartment in Surat's Sagrampura area, acting on a tip-off about the accused. They found two persons, who identified themselves as Pradeep Maurya and Pankaj Maurya and claimed that they hailed from Bihar's Katihar district. The duo said they were working at a diamond factory in Katargam.
However, they soon confessed to having forged Aadhaar cards. The elder brother was identified as Mohammed Afridi Wajidali (25). The younger brother is 17-year-old, officers said. The accused said they had been facing issues while they were searching for an accommodation. They said that when they found a house in Sagrampura, they were allegedly told that the owner only rents it out to people from the Hindu community. The accused then got Aadhaar cards made with fake Hindu names and started to live in the flat on rent. They also allegedly used the same Aadhaar card to land a job at the factory, officers said..
Police arrested Wajidali under BNS sections 319 (cheating by personation), 336(2) (forgery), 336(3)(forgery with the intent to cheat), 338 (forgery of valuable security, wills and related documents), 340 (using forged documents as genuine).
Talking to The Indian Express, Athwalines police inspector H K Solanki said, 'We have arrested the elder brother and the younger one was sent to a children's remand home. They hail from Bihar and were staying in Surat and working at a diamond unit for the past one year. They had got documents forged to get a place to stay and a job in the city. We are trying to dig out more information. We are also trying to ascertain if they had any other motive.'

Blast in Mohali oxygen plant kills 2, injures 4; shockwaves felt 1km away, walls of houses cracked

Mohali: A massive blast at an oxygen cylinder filling plant in Mohali killed two workers and injured four on Wednesday morning. The explosion was so powerful that it blew the roof to smithereens, cracked walls of houses in the neighbourhood, and sent shockwaves up to 1km away. Eyewitnesses said the blast occurred when a cylinder was thrown from a truck during unloading. Deputy commissioner Komal Mittal said an inquiry was ordered and the report expected in a week. DSP Harsimran Bal, who is heading the probe, said the factory supervisors had been named in the FIR. Police said both the deceased hailed from Uttar Pradesh — Mohammad Asif, 25, from Lucknow and Davinder Kumar, 27, of Sehari village. The injured are Akbar Ali, 50, Ashok Kumar, 44, Sarvesh, 45, and Sachin, 24. Ali was discharged and the others are in hospital. The blast triggered panic in Industrial Area Phase IX. DSP Bal said police received information about the explosion around 9.20am. "Preliminary inquiry indicates the blast occurred during the loading and unloading process. We have registered an FIR under BNS Section 106 (causing death by negligence) on the basis of a statement by Akbar Ali." Factory workers and locals believed it was a bomb blast. Emergency services, including police, fire brigade and medical teams, responded promptly. Senior police and administrative officials rushed to the site. "An FIR has already been registered and a police inquiry marked. While the exact cause is under investigation, initial findings suggest the blast may have occurred due to an impact on the cylinder during handling," Mittal said. Tensions flared at the plant when family members of the deceased and the injured workers stopped an ambulance, alleging police were trying to conceal facts. "We were not informed where they are being taken. We feel something is being hidden from us," said a relative of one of the victims. DSP Bal calmed them down, after which the families then allowed the ambulance to leave. Police said a fair and thorough inquiry was underway and all findings would be made public.

Calcutta HC commutes death sentence, says justice must not be 'bloodthirsty'

KOLKATA: Calcutta high court's Jalpaiguri circuit bench has commuted the death sentence of 22-year-old Aftab Alam to life imprisonment without parole for 20 years, ruling that justice must not be "bloodthirsty" and punishment should focus on reform, not revenge. Aftab had been convicted of murdering his maternal uncle Mehtab during a robbery attempt at the victim's Dhupguri home in north Bengal on July 28, 2023. The trial court sentenced him to death, calling his act a "betrayal" against the man who had sheltered him after his father's death. Trial court relied 'more on emotion than facts': Cal HC But Justices Sabyasachi Bhattacharyya and Uday Kumar said in a 47-page ruling issued Aug 1 the trial court relied "more on emotion than facts" and failed to prove that Aftab's conduct met the "rarest of rare" threshold required for capital punishment. "The recent alteration in the names of jails from 'prisons' to 'correctional homes' is for a reason," the bench wrote. "It reflects the transition from the basic bloodthirsty instinct of society to take revenge to a more civilised policy. .. One should hate the offence and not the offender." HC said Aftab had not lived with his uncle for years, having moved to New Delhi before returning to Dhupguri. "The 'position of trust' approach cannot be applied," the judges wrote, adding that the trial judge's assumptions about betrayal lacked evidence. "At the time of the offence, the appellant was long gone from the shelter of his uncle and was no longer under his tutelage." Mehtab was stabbed to death in his sleep while wife Moumita survived the attack. Aftab was joined by five alleged co-accused, all minors. The court said the killing appeared to be "a spontaneous reaction" rather than a premeditated act of vengeance, citing the use of Aftab's Aadhaar card to check into a hotel nearby before the robbery. Rejecting the trial court's claim that Aftab was a "veteran criminal", the bench said his actions showed "unprofessionalism" typical of immature offenders. "Lack of remorse in gestures & postures of the accused at trial cannot be an indicator that he cannot be reformed," the court said.
