
Demonising palm oil won't improve public health. Better focus on food literacy, balanced diet
By positioning palm oil as the primary culprit behind India's growing obesity rate and LDL, or 'bad', cholesterol levels, the article misses a much larger, more nuanced picture that involves food security, farmer welfare, strategic self-sufficiency, and environmental realities. The problem of obesity in India is real and rising. But attributing it largely to palm oil consumption is misguided. India's annual per capita edible oil consumption stands at 19.7 kg, which is well above the ICMR-recommended 12 kg.
However, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav recently stated in Parliament that there is ' no unanimous scientific evidence ' linking palm oil consumption to negative health effects. He also noted that the Indian Council of Medical Research – National Institute of Nutrition recommends the use of a variety of vegetable oils, including palm oil, as relying entirely on a single vegetable oil may not provide the optimal balance of fatty acids.
A recent opinion article in ThePrint , titled Oil is making India obese and import-hungry. Modi wants to change that , goes beyond merely criticising palm oil for increasing obesity in the country. It goes so far as to suggest that the Government of India should exclude this versatile vegetable oil from its National Mission on Edible Oils, citing its widespread use in the unorganised sector, which drives higher consumption and adversely affects public health.
However, this increase isn't unique to palm oil. It reflects a larger shift in dietary habits driven by urbanisation, sedentary lifestyles, and the growing intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). According to a 2023 WHO report, India's UPF market surged from $900 million in 2006 to nearly $38 billion in 2019. These foods, rich in refined sugars, sodium, and preservatives, pose far greater health risks than any single cooking medium.
Beyond diets
It is true that palm oil contains saturated fats, but not all saturated fats are created equal. When consumed as part of a balanced diet, palm oil is no more harmful than other edible oils. It contains nearly equal proportions of saturated and unsaturated fats and is rich in antioxidants like vitamin E. Its health impact depends more on the quantity and context of consumption than on its mere presence in the kitchen.
However, the conversation must go beyond kitchens and diets. India imports over 15 million tonnes of edible oil annually, including Rs 40,000 crore worth of palm oil, which accounts for about 56 per cent of the total imports. This heavy reliance on imports strains our foreign exchange reserves and exposes us to global price volatility and supply chain disruptions. The National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP), backed by Rs 11,040 crore in funding, is a strategic effort to cut edible oils import dependency, boost domestic production, and enhance farmer incomes.
This mission is already bearing fruit. In Telangana, farmers have seen up to a 50 per cent rise in prices, earning Rs 21,000 for a tonne of Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) produce. States like Karnataka, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh have also embraced oil palm cultivation. Importantly, in India, forest lands are not being recommended and used for oil palm cultivation, contrary to common misconceptions. Only the cultivable land of the individual farmer is under oil palm cultivation mainly as replacement of rice cultivation and that too in agro-ecologically suitable regions only. Oil palm is a rapidly expanding profitable crop in northeastern states under NMEO-OP, contrary to common misconceptions.

Embracing palm oil
From an environmental standpoint, palm oil is the world's most land-efficient oil crop, yielding 4-5 tonnes of oil per hectare compared to just 0.4-0.5 tonnes for soybean. According to Our World in Data, palm oil makes up 36 per cent of the world's vegetable oil production using only 9 per cent of the land devoted to oil crops. Replacing it with alternatives like soybean, rapeseed, or sunflower would demand significantly more land, potentially exacerbating deforestation. Oil palm also requires less water than resource-intensive crops like sugarcane or rice, a critical factor for water-stressed regions.
NMEO-OP also incorporates sustainability safeguards. Special provision for intercropping of annual crops in oil palm plantation has been made for the initial four years of non-bearing period of oil palm. Such agri-horticultural systems conserve land resources and are better adapted to climate change. Palm plantation provides farmer buy-back guarantees, and offers viability gap funding to protect growers from price fluctuations. The mission further encourages bilateral cooperation with countries like Malaysia in the field of palm oil, especially in research and development, seed supply, and partnership management.
Atmanirbhar Bharat is more than just a slogan; it is a strategic push for independence in critical sectors, including food and edible oils. Palm oil isn't just another cooking medium; it's a vital component of India's pursuit of edible oil security. Public health must be addressed through stronger food literacy, better regulation of UPFs, and promotion of balanced diets, not by demonising a crop that sustains thousands of farmers and reduces our import bill by billions.
Blaming palm oil unfairly may make for a dramatic headline, but India's food strategy must rise above fear-driven narratives. What the country needs is not a retreat from palm oil, but a smart, sustainable, and informed embrace of it.

Make a vow to reduce salt, processed food , says JP Nadda on World Food Safety day
On this World Food Safety Day, every Indian must make a vow to reduce salt intake, processed food as well as 10 per cent of oil consumption, said Jagat Prakash Nadda, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare on Saturday. According to him, it is our collective responsibility to spread awareness about eating the right food. Nadda was addressing an event organised to celebrate World Food Safety Day by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru. World Food Safety Day is celebrated on June 7 of every year. "We should take the clarion call given by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and see to it that at least in our own homes, we are able to reduce 10 per cent of oil consumption and salt consumption. This is the most necessary part. We also have to see to it that processed foods are reduced to the maximum," said Nadda. He also said to remain healthy and to eat right, India must revisit its traditional food practices. "Our traditional food includes many types of preparations with millets. We have to revive this tradition," he added. Nadda also said health consciousness and the Eat Right Movement are imperative as obesity is spreading fast in India. "India's diabetes study by ICMR says that from 2008 to 2020, the obesity in urban India has increased by 39.6 per cent and in rural areas, it has increased by 23.1% per cent. It is also projected that by 2050, 1/3 of the population will be obese," said Nadda, adding that time to act is now. During the event, Nadda also released a booklet called 'Eat Right India'. Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of Department of School Education and Literacy, who addressed the gathering via video conferencing, explained how the science of eating right has become a part of National Council for Education, Research and Training's curriculum.

How animal bite deaths hit MP villagers even after rabies vaccination
A spate of deaths has hit a group of mostly tribal people who had assembled for a wedding at Limbai village in Madhya Pradesh's Barwani district, spreading panic. Six people have died since early May—the last one on June 2—after being bitten by an animal suspected to be a rabid morning on May 5, an animal bit 17 people sleeping outside their homes in Limbai, located some 45 km from Barwani town. The victims, some of whom had come from other villages for a wedding, described the animal as resembling a search was launched but the animal was never traced, until on June 4 when forest department staff found the remains of an animal, with its legs tied, in a dry well near the village.'We suspect the remains are that of a jackal. The animal was perhaps caught, killed and thrown into the well. We have sent the remains for a lab test,' said Ashish Bansod, divisional forest officer, Barwani. Three people died on May 23, one each on May 27 and June 1 and another person on June 2. All of them had been administered anti-rabies vaccines immediately after being bit. Three heads of cattle also died after being bitten by the families of the deceased have been paid Rs 8 lakh each as compensation, informed could have caused the deaths even after vaccines were administered? The district administration has sent samples of the vaccines for tests. Samples and swabs drawn from the deceased have also been sent for tests to ascertain if the fatalities were indeed caused by rabies.'If not stored properly or if the cold chain is broken, the efficacy of drugs may reduce. At times, if the schedule of injections is not followed, efficacy goes down as well,' said Dr Avinash Dube, a medical remaining 11 people who suffered bites are under observation at medical facilities, including the MY Hospital at divisional headquarters Indore. 81,000 Vials, Rs 24 Crore In 3 Months: Weight Loss Drug Mounjaro Sales Triple As Patients Shift To Higher Dose
With three months since its launch in India, according to latest Pharmatrac data, Mounjaro clocked Rs 12.6 crore in sales in May 2025—a threefold increase from March In a sign of rising adoption, sales of Mounjaro—the breakthrough weight loss and type 2 diabetes drug—have nearly tripled in the last two months, data shows. American drugmaker Eli Lilly launched Mounjaro in India on March 20, triggering immediate frenzy, especially among those looking to achieve weight loss and glucose control. Doctors told News18 they were flooded with requests from patients eager to start Mounjaro or learn more about its benefits. With three months since its launch in India, according to latest Pharmatrac data, Mounjaro clocked Rs 12.6 crore in sales in May 2025—a threefold increase from March. The higher dosage form of five milligram, in particular, more than doubled in value and quantity sales between April and May, indicating a strong trend of patient progression to the next stage of treatment. As per the medical protocol, patients start with lower dosage of 2.5 milligram weekly dose and upgrade to 5 milligram after four weeks. 'This clinical shift is clearly reflected in market numbers. Five mg pack sales jumped from Rs 3.08 crore in April to Rs 7.53 crore in May, while unit sales rose from over 9,300 to over 22,900," Sheetal Sapale, vice-president (commercial), Pharmatrac, told News18. 'Looking at these trends and the acceptance of this therapy—by physicians as well as patients—along with the affordable pricing of Rs 18,000 to Rs 22,000 per month dosage indicates a definite pick up in consumption." The total market for Mounjaro has reached Rs 23.94 crore over the past three months, selling more than 81,000 vials of the drug—signalling growing adoption in diabetes care protocols. According to Dr Anoop Misra, chairman, Fortis C-DOC Centre of Excellence for Diabetes, Metabolic Diseases and Endocrinology, clinical use of Mounjaro in India closely reflects the trends observed in the data. 'A substantial number of patients are being initiated at 2.5 mg, with a timely escalation to 5 mg in line with recommended protocols. This pattern suggests good tolerability and early clinical efficacy in glycemic control and weight reduction." Misra told News18: 'With growing familiarity and broader access, increased use of higher doses (7.5 mg and above) is likely, especially in patients requiring enhanced metabolic outcomes." The injectable drug is approved by India's apex drug regulatory body, Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection priced at Rs 4,375 for a 5 mg vial and Rs 3,500 for a 2.5 mg vial, making the monthly expenditure around Rs 14,000-Rs 17,500. The drug is claimed to be 80 per cent cheaper than in the United States. Entry-Level Dosage Sales Plateau Mounjaro, the brand name for Tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable, is a first-in-class medication that combines the effects of two naturally occurring hormones: GIP (Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide) and GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1). Data shows that the 2.5mg dose of Mounjaro—generally prescribed as the starting regimen for type 2 diabetes patients or those looking to shed weight—has shown signs of 'plateauing growth". This trend confirms a gradual shift to higher doses. The sales value for the 2.5 mg injection rose marginally from Rs 4.80 crore in April to Rs 5.08 crore in May, after a steeper increase from Rs 1.42 crore in March. The data shows that the unit sales also reflect this trend, increasing from 5,400 in March to 18,270 in April, but only marginally to 19,350 in May. While the 2.5 mg variant remains essential for entry-level patient initiation, its month-on-month growth may continue to taper off as the patient base matures and advances to the next phase of dosing.
