"Boy In A Hurry" Vs "Politics of Delay": DK Shivakumar And Tejasvi Surya Clash
The opening of the new Yellow Line section of the Bengaluru metro has sparked a row between Karnataka's Congress government and the BJP and senior BJP leader Tejasvi Surya invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has called him a "boy in a hurry", accusing him of announcing the details and sending the invitation without consulting the state government. Tejasvi Surya has hit back, calling the Deputy Chief Minister "ageist' and "insensitive" and said theirs is a "politics of delay".
"I am part of a young generation in India that wants reforms today -- not in some distant future," Mr Surya told NDTV in an exclusive interview. "He (Shivakumar) may have no urgency because he comes from a party that represents the politics of delay," he said.
The metro, he added, is a requirement for thousands who have to spend two hours in public transport just to reach their office.
"This is the situation and the Deputy Chief Minister says what is the urgency... A two-km flyover in my constituency took 8.5 years to complete. I am not okay with that," he added.
The Congress, he has alleged, delayed the inauguration six times. "Recently, the seven MLAs of the Yellow Line area, two MPs, our district president, and hundreds of public members... all worked hard, protested, and demanded the inauguration be done by August 15," he said.
Earlier, giving reporters a ride in the new metro line, Mr Shivakumar had said Rs 7,610 crore has been spent on the line that covers 19.5 km.
"The clearances to operate this have come only on July 31. Our poor young MP who is inexperienced has been in a hurry but we can't do that. The technical clearances came only on July 31. Today is August 5 and the Prime Minister has been given time to inaugurate this on August 10," he told reporters.
Mr Surya accused the Congress of trying to take credit for a project for which they had little contribution.
"As soon as it was announced that the Prime Minister will inaugurate the Metro line on Aug 10, yesterday they (the Congress) started publicity tours. The work on this Metro line began in 2018 and was supposed to be completed by 2021. Some problems occurred due to Covid-19, and some due to land acquisition. Even then, neither Congress nor anyone else came forward to help," he told reporters earlier.
"During the Covid-19 period, BS Yediyurappa-led BJP government was in power. Even during Covid-19, civil works happened under our (BJP) government. There were problems in calling workers, so we met former CM Yediyurappa and he released additional funds. Much work was done. Later, during former CM and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai's tenure, we (the BJP) completed 95 per cent of the civil works. Their (Congress) government didn't even appoint a full-time Managing Director for BMRCL," Mr Surya alleged.

Govt approves Rs 30,000-crore compensation to oil marketing companies for their losses on cooking gas sales
The Union Cabinet on Friday approved a budgetary support of Rs 30,000 for public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) to cover their losses on sale of cooking gas cylinders below market price in consumer interest. The compensation to give relief to the OMCs—Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL)—was in the works for a few months. It was expected to be from the additional mop-up from the hike in excise duty on petrol and diesel that took effect in April. In July, The Indian Express has reported that the proposal was expected to be considered soon by the Union Cabinet. It is estimated that the three OMCs incurred a cumulative loss of over Rs 41,000 crore on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG, or cooking gas) sales in 2024-25 (FY25) as they have been selling the household cooking fuel way below international prices. In April, Petroleum Secretary Pankaj Jain had said that he was hopeful that the OMCs will be compensated for their accumulated losses on LPG sales over a year or so through an appropriate mechanism by the government. Sources indicated that the Petroleum Ministry had sought support from the Finance Ministry to cover these losses. Support was also sought before the Budget for FY26, but no relief was provided at the time. Annual petrol and diesel sales in the country stand at around 16,000 crore litres, which means that the Rs 2-per-litre increase in excise duty announced in April should lead to an additional revenue of around Rs 32,000 crore for the government on an annualised basis. The Petroleum Ministry and the OMCs expected this incremental revenue to flow back into the OMCs as government support to cover losses on LPG sales. Notably, in October 2022, the government had approved a one-time grant of Rs 22,000 crore for OMCs to partially cover their accumulated losses of around Rs 28,000 crore at the time from selling LPG at a loss in consumer interest. According to the Petroleum Ministry's estimates, the average Saudi CP—the international benchmark for LPG pricing—had shot up to to $629 per tonne in February 2025 from $385 in July 2023. This should have ideally translated into cooking gas being retailed at Rs 1,028.50 per 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi. But at the time, it was being sold at Rs 803. As India depends on imports to meet a bulk of its LPG demand, cooking gas prices are linked to international LPG price benchmarks. In April, along with hike in excise duty on petrol and diesel, LPG prices were hiked by Rs 50 per cylinder, to provide some relief to the OMCs on cooking gas sales. Apart from top oil ministry officials, IOC had also expressed hope that the additional mop-up from fuel excise duty hike could help cover the OMCs' under-recovery on domestic LPG sales. 'The #ExciseDuty increase of Rs. 2 per litre on #petrol and #diesel by Central Government will not be passed on to the consumers. On one hand, this will insulate the customers from the price hike while on the other hand, the collected amount may be utilised towards under-recovery of #LPG, providing relief to Oil Marketing Companies,' IOC had posted on social media platform X on April 7. Cabinet Okays Rs 30,000 Crore As Compensation To Public Sector OMCs For Losses In Domestic LPG
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday approved Rs 30,000 crore compensation to three public sector Oil Marketing Companies (IOCL, BPCL and HPCL) for the under-recoveries incurred on the sale of domestic LPG. The distribution of the compensation within the OMCs will be done by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The compensation will be paid in 12 tranches, a Cabinet communique said. According to the government, this significant step also underlines the commitment to protect consumers from volatility in global energy markets while maintaining the financial health of these PSU OMCs. Domestic LPG Cylinders are supplied at regulated prices to consumers by the public sector Oil Marketing companies, namely, the IOCL, the BPCL, and the HPCL. According to a Cabinet note, the international prices of LPG remained at high levels during 2024-25 and continue to remain high. However, to insulate consumers from fluctuations in international LPG prices, the increase in cost was not passed on to consumers of domestic LPG, which led to significant losses for the three OMCs. "Despite the losses, the Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies have ensured continuous supplies of domestic LPG in the country at affordable prices," the Cabinet communique said. This compensation will allow the OMCs to continue meeting their critical requirements, such as crude and LPG procurement, servicing of debt, and sustaining their capital expenditure, thereby ensuring uninterrupted supply of LPG cylinders to households across the country. The move reaffirms the objective of ensuring the widespread availability of clean cooking fuel to all consumers of domestic LPG, including those under flagship schemes like PM Ujjwala Yojana, according to the Cabinet statement. Meanwhile, at least 10.33 crore LPG gas connections have been distributed under the Pradhanmantri Ujjwala Yojna (PMUY) across the country (as of July 1). The PMUY, launched in May 2016, aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to 8 crore women from poor households across India, which was achieved by September 2019.
