Since the legalization of sports betting, fans have become increasingly bold in approaching athletes in public and at their games. However, a heckler recently took things too far at a Chicago White Sox game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Taking aim at the visiting team, a fan yelled at Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte. Initially, no one knew what happened, only seeing a crying Marte being comforted by manager Torrey Lovullo and shortstop Geraldo Perdomo during a pitching change in the seventh inning. Even the broadcast attempted to determine what prompted the emotional breakdown, suggesting it could be because teammate Ildemaro Vargas had broken his foot earlier in the game.
But later it was confirmed that it was because the heckler made a comment about Marte's deceased mother, who died in a car accident in 2017.
At the request of Lovullo and bench coach Jeff Banister, the fan was asked to be removed from the game. However, not only was he ejected from Guaranteed Rate Field, but he was also banned from all 30 MLB parks.
ESPN notes that, according to a White Sox spokesperson, ballpark security says the fan ' is a 22-year-old who was very apologetic and remorseful after the fact, and admitted to being very inappropriate and stupid with his comments.'
'He wasn't getting it and was very pompous, and it didn't sit right with me,' Lovullo said of the remarks. 'It was just a gross comment you wouldn't say about anybody, let alone someone who lost their mom. We need better baseball fans. Baseball deserves better.'
Perdomo says that the entire team is aware that his mom, Elpidia Valdez, 'was the world to him,' and remembers how distraught he was over her sudden passing.
He was placed on the bereavement list when he got the news, immediately traveling back to the Dominican Republic and posting a touching message to her on Instagram, begging for her to come back.
Marte hit a solo home run in the first inning of the Diamondbacks' 4-1 win, but declined to comment on the unruly fan.
Social media, however, didn't hesitate to comment on the unsportsmanlike play. See the reactions below.

Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka dance at Centre Court and post about it on TikTok and Instagram

LONDON (AP) — Just in case anyone might have wondered whether there was any lingering animosity between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka after their French Open final, the two tennis stars offered proof that all is well by dancing together at Wimbledon on Friday and posting videos on social media. 'TikTok dances always had a way of bringing people together,' Sabalenka wrote on her Instagram feed below a clip of the duo showing off their moves on the Centre Court grass to the strains of the 1990 hit 'Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)' by C+C Music Factory. Gauff, a frequent TikTok user, put up a video of the pair standing outside the main stadium at the All England Club and mouthing along to a track with the words: 'OK, guys, we're back. Did you miss us? 'Cause we missed you.' Gauff wrote: 'the olive branch was extended and accepted! we're good so you guys should be too.' The No. 1-ranked Sabalenka and the No. 2-ranked Gauff held a practice session together at Centre Court ahead of the year's third Grand Slam tournament , which begins on Monday. Three weeks ago, Gauff beat Sabalenka 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 in the championship match at the last major, the French Open. Afterward, Sabalenka drew criticism from some for saying Gauff 'won the match not because she played incredible; just because I made all of those mistakes from ... easy balls.' Later, Sabalenka called her comments 'unprofessional' and said she had written to Gauff to apologize . Sabalenka, a 27-year-old from Belarus, is a three-time Grand Slam champion and was the runner-up both times Gauff, a 21-year-old American, won a major trophy, including at the 2023 U.S. Open . At Wimbledon this year, they only could face each other in the July 12 final. ___ Howard Fendrich has been the AP's tennis writer since 2002. Find his stories here: . More AP tennis:

Cal Raleigh, MLB's HR leader, to participate in 2025 Home Run Derby

Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, the MLB leader in home runs with 32, will participate in the Home Run Derby as part of MLB's upcoming All-Star festivities. Raleigh joins Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña as the second player to commit to the annual event, which takes place this year at Truist Park in Atlanta on July 14. Advertisement Affectionately known as 'Big Dumper,' Raleigh is in the midst of a historic season for the Mariners, already establishing a record for home runs by a catcher and by a switch-hitter before the All-Star break. Raleigh enters Friday's game with a .275/.380/.651 line and nine stolen bases while spending the majority of his 79 games behind the plate defensively. It's been a career year for Raleigh thus far, though he's not new to the home run leaderboards. This is the third straight year Raleigh has surpassed 30 home runs in a season, and he has hit 125 in 543 career games. The Mariners announced that Raleigh, a native of Cullowhee, N.C., will have his dad, Todd, pitching to him in the Derby. No catcher has ever won the Home Run Derby. 'I'm excited to represent the Mariners and our fanbase at the Derby,' Raleigh, 28, said in a statement released by the Mariners. 'It will be extra special for me getting to do it in Atlanta, where I spent a lot of time playing baseball as a kid.' Raleigh is the eighth member of the Mariners to participate in the derby since its inception in 1995, with Julio Rodríguez being the team's most recent representative. Ken Griffey, Jr. won the event three times as a Mariner.
