In the next session on June 17, 'The Science of the Strong: Elevating Youth Sports Performance,' Aaron Adams of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science will explain his work as manager of LSUS's Human Performance Lab and provide information about how science-based strength training positively impacts adolescent athletes.
On July 15, Amanda Lewis from the Department of Biological Sciences and the LSUS Bass Fishing Team gives insights into fish biology, bass in Louisiana waterways, and the reason for fishing limits.
Med Quest Camp at BPCC to inspire youth students
Dr. Helen Wise, Associate Provost at LSUS, said, 'The 'Talks on Tap' series offers our community a chance to engage in lively, insightful discussions on research that resonates with real-world interests and challenges. We want to create a space where knowledge is accessible, relevant, and, most importantly, enjoyable.'
'Talks on Tap' events start at 6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public; food and drink are available for purchase.

Genoa Central student wins big at Arkansas Science and Engineering Fair
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTAL/KMSS) – A Genoa Central Junior High School student placed in the 2025 Soybean Science Challenge at the Arkansas State Science and Engineering Fair. 13-year-old Bentley Dawson, an eighth grader at Genoa Junior High, won the Junior Division Soybean Science Challenge Award for his 'Charcoal and Soybeans' project. Teens at LaPixel Academy explore digital arts via game design 'Through the Soybean Science Challenge, students gain valuable insight into key issues affecting crop outcomes while deepening their understanding of sustainable agricultural practices,' said Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board (ASPB) chairman Brad Doyle. Junior high and high school students are confronted with real-world challenges in soybean production and sustainability during the competition and must develop practical solutions to overcome these obstacles. 'Congratulations to all the students who competed in the 2025 Arkansas Soybean Science Challenge,' said Julie Robinson, the Soybean Science Challenge administrator. 'The work these students do will have a lasting impact on soybean farmers and producers across the state. We hope these students will continue to study agriculture in the future.' Erica Mills named new David Crockett Elementary School Principal Soybean Science Challenge winners included 11 students from Arkansas, who received cash prizes from the ASPB. 'High school students received $400 awards at regional science fairs, with state-level winners earning $1,000 for first place, $500 for second, and $250 for Honorable Mention. Junior high students (grades 6–8) received $200 awards at regional fairs. 'Teachers of winning students were also honored. At regionals, high school teachers received $200 and junior high teachers received $100. At the state level, teacher awards were $300 for first place, $200 for second, and $100 for Honorable Mention.' Telescopes on Tap: see planets and constellations in Shreveport
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — Shreveport-Bossier residents can enjoy a new program called 'Telescopes on Tap' at Great Raft Brewing, where they can view planets and constellations with smart telescopes and learn about astronomy trivia and prizes. 'Telescopes on Tap' is an exiting new program to give individuals a basic introduction to observing planets constellations and what to look for in the night sky with or without a telescope, says event the coordinator Charlie Urban. Shreveport Bossier Astronomical Society (SBAS) will introduce a 'new generation of smart telescopes which are rapidly changing the learning curve for beginning astronomers. You have to see this to believe it.' When asked about his why, Urban said, 'I believe you'll understand the answer when you look through one of our telescopes for the first time and see the moons of Jupiter or the Hercules Great Globular Cluster, a brilliant cluster of thousands of stars gravitationally bound together. Maybe it will hit you when you look through a telescope and see another galaxy millions of light years away from us or the colors of a brilliant nebula.' The program will feature astronomy trivia and prizes presented by the current president, Dr. Cran Lucas of LSUS. And if weather permits they will end the evening with stargazing. The event will be located at Great Raft Brewing, 1251 Dalzell Street, Shreveport. Patrons must be 21 and over to attend. The Strawberry Moon for 2025 will occur on June 11, 2025. SBAS notes 'the full moon on June 11 is not officially full until 2:44 am Central Time, however it will be most beautiful at moonrise as it comes up over the horizon at about 8:15 pm. This will be difficult to see in town so the best spot would be in an open area with an unobstructed view to the east. The Bossier Refuge is a beautiful spot but watch out for mosquitoes. This will be when it is big and colorful and will make a beautiful 'horizon shot'.' Urban says, this marks the full moon during June, traditionally named the Strawberry Moon because of the strawberry harvest that occurs around this time.
