No Chris Gayle, 5 Players From MI! AB De Villiers Picks His All-Time IPL XI

AB De Villiers played in the IPL with Chris Gayle for Royal Challengers Bengaluru from 2011 to 2017, and they both helped RCB reach IPL finals in 2011 and 2016. Legendary South African batter and former captain AB de Villiers played in a total of 184 IPL matches for two teams—Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (formerly Royal Challengers Bangalore)—and scored a total of 5162 runs. During his IPL career from 2008 to 2021, ABD hammered three centuries and 40 fifties. The 41-year-old cricketer, who is one of the greatest players of all time, in a recent interview with Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel, picked his all-time IPL XI. In his list of 11 players, ABD included five from Mumbai Indians and two from Chennai Super Kings. But surprisingly there was no place for Chris Gayle and Rashid Khan. Gayle played 85 matches for RCB in the IPL from 2011 to 2017 and scored 3163 runs. Rashid, on the other hand, holds the record for taking the most wickets in T20s. In the IPL, the legendary spinner from Afghanistan has played 136 matches so far for two teams and picked up 158 wickets. In addition to ignoring Gayle, ABD didn't include any player from the West Indies in his all-time IPL XI. In the last 18 years, apart from Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell from the West Indies have played more than 100 matches in the IPL and made big names for themselves. ABD included former India and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma as opener along with Matthew Hayden, who played 32 matches for CSK and also won the Orange Cap in IPL 2009. Virat Kohli was included as the No. 3 batter by De Villiers, and the highest run scorer in IPL was followed by Suryakumar Yadav at 4. Surya is the captain of India's T20I team, and in IPL 2025, he won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the season award. De Villiers included himself as the No. 5 batter, and he was followed by Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni. Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga, who have only played for MI in their IPL careers, were the two pacers De Villiers picked in his all-time XI, and the two spinners were Yuzvendra Chahal and Daniel Vettori. AB de Villiers' all-time IPL XI: Rohit Sharma, Matthew Hayden, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, AB de Villiers, Hardik Pandya, MS Dhoni, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Lasith Malinga, Daniel Vettori. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Doctor only gave a clearance for eyesight': MS Dhoni drops big hint on his IPL 2026 return

After CSK's poor IPL 2025 campaign, Dhoni's future remains uncertain as he is not fully fit to continue his career. read more Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni arranges the field during his team's away match against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, 25 May. AP Former India captain has dropped a fresh hint for Chennai Super Kings fans on his Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 return. After a disappointing IPL 2025 campaign, where CSK finished last in the points table for the first time ever, many assumed that Dhoni had played his final season. But the legendary wicketkeeper kept his fans in suspense by not confirming his decision at the end of the season. 'It depends. I have 4-5 months to decide, there's no hurry. Need to keep my body fit. You have to be at your best,' Dhoni said after CSK's final game of IPL 2025. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Dhoni on his IPL future At a recent event, Dhoni said that his doctor gave him a clearance for his eyesight, but not for the rest of his body. Dhoni has been dealing with a knee injury for the last couple of years and still isn't fully fit. Even during the last season, many people were worried about his fitness, including CSK coaches. 'I just got a tick mark for the next five years I can play cricket. But the only catch is Doc only gave a clearance for eyesight. Body, He didn't gave a clearance for the body. But I cannot play cricket only with my eyes,' Dhoni said. Next 5 years I will play cricket Thala latest interview 😂🥺❤️❤️❤️❤️ — Bhuvan 🦁 (@bhuvanChari007) August 2, 2025 Dhoni, who was retained for Rs 4 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, played all 14 matches this season and scored 196 runs. He even returned as captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad's injury, but CSK couldn't avoid a poor finish. However, Dhoni is hopeful about the team's future. 'We are slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now," he said. 'I won't say we (CSK) slacked off (in IPL 2025). But there were certain holes that we needed to plug in. A small auction is coming in December. Some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those in," he added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Dhoni's comment still doesn't provide any clarity regarding his future, but it is now absolutely clear that he is not fit to play cricket. With this, the CSK management should start thinking about a future without Dhoni, as they have already pushed him well beyond his limits.

MS Dhoni keeps retirement plans quiet but promises CSK will be 'quite sorted' next year: ‘We were slightly worried…'

After a forgettable IPL 2025 campaign where Chennai Super Kings finished bottom of the table, MS Dhoni, who took over the captaincy of the franchise mid-way through the season after an injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad, offered a clear-eyed assessment of the team's struggles and the road ahead. Speaking at a private function, the CSK legend acknowledged the batting issues that plagued the five-time champions and revealed that Ruturaj Gaikwad's return would be key in reviving their fortunes next season. MS Dhoni during IPL 2025(PTI) Dhoni, who rarely makes public appearances, revealed that the team's batting concerns should ease with Gaikwad's return and all but confirmed the franchise's plans to retain the stylish opener. 'We are slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now,' he said. Dhoni oversaw a turbulent campaign where CSK won just four out of 14 matches. The absence of an in-form top order left the side vulnerable throughout the tournament. Gaikwad's injury, coupled with an unsettled middle order, proved costly as CSK failed to mount any serious challenge. The 27-year-old last played for CSK on April 8 against Punjab Kings at Mullanpur. He briefly agreed to play county cricket for Yorkshire but later withdrew, citing personal reasons. He has now been named in the West Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, indicating his return to competitive cricket is on track. Dhoni on CSK's prolonged struggles Dhoni also acknowledged the franchise's shortcomings over the past two seasons and indicated that changes were on the horizon with the IPL mini-auction coming up in December. 'I won't say we (CSK) slacked off (in IPL 2025). But there were certain holes that we needed to plug in. A small auction is coming in December. Some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those in,' he said. With back-to-back underwhelming seasons, Dhoni said it was crucial to reflect on what went wrong and focus on course correction. 'Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also,' he said. Dhoni, however, didn't address his future with CSK. There had been a hint about Dhoni considering whether he would turn up for another season after CSK's last match of the season, where he stated that he would assess how his body recovers.
