LED streetlight installation nears completion in city
Thiruvananthapuram
and Kazhakkoottam divisions are still pending.
Among these, the Thiruvananthapuram division witnessed the most substantial delays, with the installation process coming to a halt for several months due to logistical and coordination issues.
"The delay in the Thiruvananthapuram division was unfortunate, but the work is back on track. We are coordinating with KSEB and other agencies to ensure it is completed by Aug," said Medayil Vikraman, works standing committee chairman of corporation.
The city-wide project, launched to replace conventional streetlights with energy-efficient LED lights, aims to significantly reduce electricity consumption and maintenance costs while improving public safety and nighttime visibility. Under the initiative, thousands of LED units are being installed across various wards under the city corporation.
The Kazhakootam division, which includes several high-density urban pockets and major roads, has also seen slower progress than anticipated, though not as severe as in the Thiruvananthapuram division. Corporation officials attribute the delays to issues with contractor mobilization and disruptions caused by overlapping civic infrastructure projects. The corporation is planning to install 1,15,000 streetlights in 100 wards.

Nod for KSEB's energy storage plan
T'puram: Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) approved KSEB's plan to set up a major Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Mylatti substation in Kasargod. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The board plans to set up a 125 MW/500 MWh battery storage system, which could play a key role in managing the peak hour power demand in north Kerala to a considerable extent. As renewable energy penetration increases across the grid, challenges associated with managing fluctuations in demand and supply have become increasingly difficult, especially during evening and morning peak hours when renewable energy, particularly solar power, is unavailable. This necessitates additional power dispatch to maintain grid stability, the board pointed out at the outset of the petition. The BESS under consideration was selected as an initial initiative to assess the feasibility and operational effectiveness of the system. The installation is expected to ensure a daily energy availability of 0.5 Mu (four hours of storage). The project performance will be evaluated for potential scalability in the future. Govt of India allotted Rs 135 crore as Viability Gap Fund for the development of BESS in Kerala. KSEB engaged Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd as the BESS implementing agency. After completing the bidding process, JSW Neo Energy Ltd emerged as the lowest bidder, quoting the capacity charge of Rs 4.41 lakh/MW/Month. KSEB submitted that the proposed BESS project does not require any upfront capital investment from the licensee. The project, therefore, offers a financially sustainable solution for addressing state's peak demand challenges while augmenting internal power storage capacity.

CMC to illuminate new stretch with LED lights
1 2 Cuttack: The Cuttack municipal corporation (CMC) has announced plans to illuminate a newly constructed road stretching from NH-16 to Nuapada, which runs alongside Taladanda canal. The project will see the installation of over 100 octagonal lighting poles equipped with energy-efficient LED lights on the 1.5km-long stretch. Thw initiative comes in response to the increasing vehicular movement on the road, which has raised safety concerns among commuters. "The safety of citizens is our top priority. This project will not only ensure a well-lit road but also reduce the risks of accidents and criminal activities," Cuttack mayor Subhash Singh said. The project has been allocated an estimated budget of Rs 92 lakh, with tenders awarded to a private contractor. Singh added that the work is scheduled to be completed by the end this month. Prabhas Biswal, CMC's electrical engineer, elaborated on the technical aspects and said, "An automatic timer system will be installed, ensuring the lights switch on automatically once the sun sets." This technology-driven approach is expected to reduce manual intervention, improve safety and enhance energy efficiency by monitoring power usage and cutting maintenance costs. Residents of the area have welcomed the move. Rohan Biswal, a resident of Nuapada, said, "We are glad that the long-neglected stretch will finally have proper illumination. CMC must ensure its maintenance properly after installation."

The prime minister is also likely to be felicitated by the parliamentary party over his government's military response to the terror strike. Live Events The electoral college for the vice president poll includes MPs of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, and its current strength is 782. If the Opposition also names a candidate, a distinct possibility, then the poll is scheduled to be held on September 9. Sources said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and a few BJP national general secretaries are likely to be coordinating with allies for the vice presidential poll. Since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP lost its majority but comfortably crossed the halfway mark with allies, the sessional meeting of the party's MPs was expanded to include its allies. PM Modi had addressed the first such meeting on July 2. However, no meeting has been held in the last few sessions. Before the last national elections, he used to address the weekly meetings of BJP parliamentary party, now expanded to include party's allies such as the TDP, JD(U), and LJP (Ram Vilas). The meeting is attended by MPs of the ruling alliance, and PM Modi often covers a sweep of political and governance issues, and at times touches on the government's agenda in Parliament. He often offers to the MPs talking points to be raised in public, especially their constituencies.
