Delhi Confidential: Caught in crossfire
Senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy got a taste of the bitterness between TMC leaders Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra on Monday. Rudy, who is contesting against his party colleague Sanjeev Balyan for the post of secretary (administration), Constitution Club of India, was at the Makar Dwar of the Parliament House when he saw Banerjee leaving the premises. Rudy approached Banerjee, a four-time MP from Serampore, seeking his vote but the latter shouted at him that he would not support anyone who is backed by Moitra. 'You are supported by Mahua Moitra. I will not vote for you,' Banerjee told Rudy. As the stunned BJP leader looked at him, Banerjee announced that he 'would warn everyone who is friendly' with Moitra to stay away from him. Old Practice Revived Rajya Sabha getting adjourned for the day after being informed about the death of former Jharkhand CM and sitting MP Shibu Soren marked a return to a practice which was discontinued a few years ago. The proceedings of the Upper House were adjourned only for a few hours after the death of former Union Ministers Arun Jaitley (2019), Ram Vilas Paswan (2020) and Congress leader Rajeev Satav (2021). On Monday, Opposition leaders led by Congress's Jairam Ramesh suggested that the House should go back to the old practice of adjournment as a mark of respect to the deceased member. Mission Sindoor The invitation cards for Independence Day programme this year carry a logo of Operation Sindoor, an effort by the government to publicise India's military operation against terror targets in Pakistan in May this year. Was drawn to Guruji's fiery speeches: Arjun Munda
Jamshedpur: Prominent politicians from Kolhan on Monday paid rich tributes to Shibu Soren and recalled their first meeting with him. Former CM Arjun Munda , who started his political career with JMM before switching to the BJP, said he was drawn to Shibu in the 1980s. "The charisma of Disom Guru Shibu Soren was like a magnetic pull, which drew me closer to his agitation, against the money lenders and land grabbers, as a schoolboy in the 1980s," he said. Recalling that his family too was a victim of land sharks, Munda, a former Union minister, said a fire was kindled in him as a young boy when he heard about Shibu, a man from Santhal Pargana, who was taking the pain to ensure that adivasi land is not grabbed by crafty money lenders "I physically first saw Guruji during a public rally in Telco area of Jamshedpur, where thousands of Adivasis had gathered to hear their leader, who promised to fight for their rights. I was so motivated by his speech that I decided instantly to join the movement under the leadership of this long hair-bearded man in kurta pajamas, who by that time had become my hero," said Munda. "After joining his movement as a student, I along with many others used to move from village to village in dense forest areas in night, then Chotanagpur of undivided Bihar, to escape the eyes of police and powerful money lenders and apprise the locals of their land rights, along with how to save it from the land sharks. He also recalled the infamous Gua massacre of Sept 8, 1980, when 13 innocent tribal agitators fell to the bullets of Bihar Military Police, which became a big turning point of separate Jharkhand state call. "After the Gua incident, it became a do-or-die call for Adivasis under Guruji, for a separate state from Bihar," said Munda. Former Ghatshila MLA Surya Singh Besra, another of Shibu's students, recalled that he was against the tribal people consuming liquor. "Under his guidance and leadership as a student functionary of JMM, I travelled far and wide in rural and forest areas of present Kolhan, to make locals realize how money lenders laid a trap by offering them alcohol in exchange for their land," he said. It was Besra who formed All Jharkhand Students' Union in 1986 under Shibu's directives with an aim to motivate students to join the agitation for a separate state for the tribal communities.

Cong spl train to Delhi takes off with BC push for 42% quota
Hyderabad: A special train carrying over 1,200 Congress leaders and workers, including 200 Mahila Congress members, departed from Cherlapally railway station at 10 am on Monday, heading to Delhi with a single-point agenda — to demand 42% reservation for Backward Classes. Dominated by BC leaders from across Telangana, the contingent also included Reddy and other forward caste leaders, symbolically reinforcing broad-based support for the demand. The train, expected to reach Delhi by Tuesday evening, will take a slower route as regular services are being prioritised for clearance. TPCC president B Mahesh Kumar Goud, ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Vakiti Srihari boarded the train but alighted at Alair to address a press conference. Ponnam, who came to flag off the rally, was unable to disembark at Cherlapally due to the surge of supporters crowding into his coach. AICC Telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan, who joined the journey, is expected to get off at Nagpur. On Aug 7, the leaders plan to call on the President to submit a memorandum urging her to approve two key BC reservation bills and the ordinance to remove the 50% reservation ceiling under the Panchayat Raj Act, now pending with her office. Slogans demanding '42% BC quota' and 'BC empowerment now' reverberated through the Cherlapally station. Mahila Congress state president Sunitha Rao led the 200-strong women's group, saying, "Over 200 more women are expected to join us at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday." TPCC vice-president Nirmala Reddy said: "Being a Reddy, CM Revanth has taken the lead in conducting a caste survey and passing the 42% BC reservation bills. The BCs deserve this quota, which is justified by the data from the survey. We will not stop until it's achieved." Congress leaders hit out at opposition parties for their 'hypocrisy' on BC rights. Mahesh Goud, Ponnam, and Natarajan said neither the BJP nor the BRS has the moral ground to question the Congress's commitment to BC empowerment. "Why didn't the previous BRS govt conduct a caste survey or increase BC reservations?" asked Ponnam. "In fact, former CM K Chandrasekhar Rao slashed the BC quota from 34% to 23% in the last local body elections and imposed a 50% reservation cap under the Panchayat Raj Act," he said. "It was only after Rahul Gandhi demanded a caste census that the Centre agreed to consider it. Revanth has shown that a scientific caste survey is possible. Telangana now offers a model for the nation," Natarajan added. Revanth, accompanied by ministers and senior Congress leaders, will fly to Delhi on Tuesday for a three-day visit, concluding on Aug 7.
