Man gets six-months' jail, RM2,500 fine for stealing, reselling PS5 in Kuching

KUCHING (April 22): A 38-year-old man was sentenced to six months' imprisonment and fined RM2,500 by the Magistrate's Court here today for disposing of a stolen PlayStation 5 (PS5) from a local electronics and furniture retail company by selling it to a gaming retail outlet.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan meted out the sentence against Tay Eng Kiat after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code.
The section provides for imprisonment of up to seven years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
The offence was committed at a gaming retail outlet in a shopping mall at Jalan Song here, around 2.19pm on Dec 12, 2024.
According to the facts of the case, a staff member of the electronics and furniture retail company, acting as the complainant, discovered that one unit of the gaming console in question, was missing.
The complainant reviewed CCTV footage and found that the accused had taken a PS5 unit without making payment at approximately 1.24pm that day.
The loss was estimated at RM2,449. A police report was subsequently lodged for insurance reference and further action.
Police investigations led to Tay's arrest and the recovery of the stolen PS5 from the gaming retail outlet, to which he had sold the item for RM1,900 after stealing it.
