A woman lost 130 pounds after weight loss surgery. 4 simple habits have kept her in shape for 3 years.

At age 22, Emma Roma Jayne had no confidence.
The content creator and TikTok strategist, based in Australia, told Business Insider that she was very active growing up, but an injury forced her to stop playing sports and she "started piling the weight on."
In March 2022, Roma Jayne decided to get bariatric surgery: a weight-loss procedure to reduce the size of the stomach, meaning you can't eat as much and feel full faster. At the time, GLP-1 medications like Ozempic weren't on her radar. Roma Jayne complemented the surgery with therapy to treat her eating disorder.
"Instead of working on my mental health, I would just binge and eat and get the dopamine from food," she said.
To be eligible for the surgery, she had to commit to making serious, long-term lifestyle changes to prevent gaining the weight back, including having regular sessions with a nutritionist and a personal trainer for six months pre-surgery and two years after.
"People think that it's like a 'lose weight quick' thing. And that's all you have to do and you'll be happy and everything will be solved, but your hunger does come back," Roma Jayne said of bariatric surgery. "If I had those bad habits, that lifestyle that I had before weight loss surgery, I would 100% gain my weight back."
The data is mixed, but one a review of studies published in the journal Obesity Surgery found that up to 76% of patients regained a significant amount of weight six years after bariatric surgery. Reasons included the size of their stomach growing over time, inadequate support post-op, and patients struggling to break unhealthy habits.
Following the advice of her nutritionist, Roma Jayne initially followed a high-protein, low-carb diet to lose weight, started working out six times a week, and lost 132 pounds over two years.
Three years post-op, she's maintained her lower weight by mainly eating whole foods and being as active as possible. She has what she sees as a more balanced and sustainable approach to her diet and fitness routine.
Roma Jayne, now 24, shared the four habits that she said have helped her stay in shape.
1) Eating mostly whole foods and the occasional treat
As working out regularly and eating a healthy diet became habits for Roma Jayne, she became more interested in and passionate about nutrition. After the surgery, she ate small portions and few carbs to lose weight, but she no longer excludes any food group as her focus is long-term health.
She still eats lots of protein as she learned that it helps her maintain her weight, but avoids ultra-processed foods and prioritizes whole foods, which are linked to better overall health.
Roma Jayne said that she eats nutritious, balanced meals, such as homemade pizza and wholemeal wraps, around 90% of the time, but isn't scared of the occasional sweet treat.
"If I want to have chocolate, I'll just have some chocolate. I don't restrict myself too much," she said.
Roma Jayne's approach echoes what's known as the 80/20 rule, or eating healthily 80% of the time and being more flexible the remaining 20%.
Dietitians have told BI that this is a sustainable way to eat and maintain your weight, because restrictive diets often lead to cravings, which make it harder to eat high calorie foods in moderation.
2) Strength training three times a week
Roma Jayne lifts weights at the gym three or four times a week. Her current goal is to maintain her fat loss, while gaining muscle, which is known as body recomposition.
Research suggests that strength training helps burn fat while also building muscle mass, which improves the metabolism.
3) Parking a little further from her destination
In the past, Roma Jayne would go to the gym but struggled to be consistent as she saw it as a punishment for being overweight rather than a way to look after her health.
Now she tries to stay as active as possible because it makes her feel good.
Aside from her formal workouts, she's conscious of her step count and takes opportunities to walk during her day.
For example, sometimes she parks a few minutes away from her office or goes for a walk on her lunch break. "Just any way to get out and about," she said.
4) Prioritizing healthy habits over the number on the scale
Over the last few years, Roma Jayne's weight has fluctuated, but she makes an effort to be kind to herself when it does. She focuses more on sustaining the healthy habits she has established than worrying about the exact number on the scale, as she knows they count for more.
"My weight fluctuates so much, and I think it's just I know that I'm exercising well, I'm eating well, I'm healthy. So as long as I know that I'm doing my best, what is on the scales just doesn't really matter," she said.
Obesity experts agree that weight alone is not an accurate measure of a person's health. Other factors, such as how much muscle mass a person has and water retention, can increase the number on the scale. Plus, research suggests that where on the body the fat is located might have more bearing on a person's health than how much of it they have.
"I think the biggest thing that's really helped me maintain these habits and maintain my weight loss is really just doing what's best for myself. And that's in every aspect of my life," Roma Jayne said.

New research from Northwestern University School of Medicine shows the average American's heart health makes them four to seven years older than their calendar age. That's because of risk factors like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and sedentary routines, driving up their risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the US. You can check your own heart age for free online using a test developed by Northwestern researchers. If you don't like what you see, incorporating daily habits like regular exercise can improve your heart age, said Dr. Sadiya Khan, a preventive cardiologist and professor of cardiovascular epidemiology who led the team that developed the calculator. "As we think about our growing, aging population, some people age faster than others, and slowing that down can have a lot of impact for health," Khan told Business Insider. How to tell if your heart is healthy Usually, doctors measure heart health in percentages using your vital signs. For instance, a patient with a 7.5% risk of heart disease is considered intermediate risk. But that doesn't translate well for the average person. "It's a challenging piece of information to communicate and grasp. What does it mean to have a risk of 7.5%?" Khan said. That's why Khan's team made an age predictor. It's easier to come up with a plan for your heart health if you understand in real terms what it means for your life expectancy. The researchers studied 14,000 adults in the US aged 30 to 79, with no prior history of heart disease. They found that, on average, women's heart health age was about four years older than their chronological age, and men's heart age was about seven years older than their chronological age. The gap widened for people with a lower income and education level; their heart age was as much as 10 years older than their chronological age. Khan added a caveat: it's important to note that the calculator is meant to be a more accurate predictor of heart health risk, but it's not designed to be used alone to manage your health. Talk to your doctor about your risk. "There's no exact number that means people should be alarmed or be concerned, but provide some context for what it means to have a heart age that's five years older or 10 years older," she said. Simple ways to boost heart health Knowing your heart health age can help you find simple, actionable steps to potentially boost longevity, Khan said. "We wanted to be sure it was a tool to motivate heart-healthy behavior," she said. "There are things we already know that can help with your heart age and improve it." To boost your heart health: Stop smoking: If you're a smoker, quitting is the number one change you can make to improve your heart health, Khan said. That's not just tobacco — marijuana has been linked to worse heart health, even in edible form. Optimize your workout: Regular physical activity, including low-intensity movement like walking, helps to strengthen your heart, and every added minute counts. Get the right macros: Whole foods rich in fiber and healthy fats like omega-3s help support your heart. Avoid processed foods and added sugars. Manage your stress: prevent strain on your heart. If you're already young at heart, following the above tips can help you stay that way for years to come. "If your heart age is a good spot, it's about strategies to maintain it," Khan said.

For years, it was mainly harvested for extracting carrageenan, a jelly-like substance widely used as a thickening agent and stabilizer in food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. But lately, A-listers and TikTok wellness warriors have declared sea moss a superfood in its own right, turning the humble seaweed into a multi-billion-dollar industry. What are the benefits of sea moss? The internet may just be catching on to this gelatinous goo, but humans have been eating it for centuries. Research suggests it's been used in Chinese medicine as far back as 600 BC. In the Caribbean, it's been a cold remedy since the 19th century. 'Sea moss is generally well-tolerated, but like anything, moderation is key,' Manaker warned. Its high iodine content could lead to thyroid problems if you overdo it. Overconsumption may also lead to iodine toxicity, which comes with side effects like nausea, fever, vomiting or a burning sensation in your mouth. 6 Sea moss is primarily sold in dried, gel and capsule forms. tdoes – There's also some evidence that sea moss might thin your blood — so if you're on blood thinners, it's best to steer clear. Novo Nordisk on Tuesday substantially cut its financial forecasts for the year as cheap, knockoff versions of its popular obesity drug Wegovy continue to hold back the pharmaceutical company's growth. The Danish drugmaker now expects sales to increase in 2025 by between 8% and 14%, revising down its May prediction of 13% to 21% growth. Operating profit is also expected to be lower by four to eight percentage points than previously estimated. Shares tumbled downward by more than 20% in U.S. trading on the news Tuesday morning, erasing over $60 billion in market capitalization. Alongside the guidance cut, Novo named company veteran Maziar Mike Doustdar as successor to outgoing CEO Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen, who announced plans in May to step down. The company is also reorganizing its research and development, merging two units into a single division that will be led by Martin Holst Lange, who will become Novo's chief scientist on Aug. 7, the same day Doustdar takes over from Jørgensen. Novo remains a leading company in what's become the pharma industry's fastest-growing market. Ozempic and Wegovy, the branded versions of the GLP-1 drug semaglutide that it respectively sells for diabetes and weight loss, are bringing in tens of billions of dollars in sales. But Novo's financial and leadership adjustments reflect the company's realization its position is slipping. Compounded versions of semaglutide, which were allowed to enter the U.S. market when Ozempic and Wegovy were in shortage, continue to cannibalize Novo's sales, even after regulators ruled they could no longer be sold en masse. Novo's solutions haven't worked as well as hoped, either. While the company brought Ozempic and Wegovy back into full supply, its attempt to compete on price with lower-cost compounded drugs isn't bearing fruit. Direct-to-consumer programs that offered the drugs at a cheaper cash price have only yielded about 30,000 prescriptions this year, Novo said Tuesday. A marketing alliance with telehealth provider Hims & Hers, meanwhile, ended in acrimony just eight weeks after it began in April. Novo accused Hims of continuing to sell knockoff Wegovy, while Hims CEO Andrew Dudum attacked Novo for allegedly pushing Hims to steer patients to its obesity product. 'This is an important moment for Novo Nordisk,' board chair Helge Lund said in a statement on Doustdar's appointment. 'The market is developing rapidly, and the company needs to address recent market challenges with speed and ambition.' In addition to its problems with compounders, Novo is losing ground to Eli Lilly, which sells the rival GLP-1 drug Zepbound for obesity. Clinical testing showed Zepbound can deliver greater weight loss than Wegovy, although Novo can claim a cardio-protective benefit for its drug that Lilly can't yet. Lilly has also out-positioned Novo in development of successor drugs to Wegovy and Zepbound, finding success in testing with a pill called orforglipron. Novo cited competition as a factor in downgrading its outlook for Wegovy and Ozempic sales in the U.S. The company hopes that recent changes in insurer CVS' drug formulary will help lift Wegovy moving forward. Rebuilding momentum will be Doustdar's priority. The executive has led Novo's international division, which includes the company's businesses outside of the U.S., since 2013. He previously oversaw commercial activities in Southeast Asia, Oceania and the Middle East. 'I come to this role with a sense of urgency, a laser focus on high performance, and a fierce determination for Novo Nordisk to aim higher than it's ever done, and to deliver to many more patients the innovation they need,' Doustdar said in a statement. Novo said its search for a replacement to Jørgensen included internal and external candidates. Some analysts had expected the company to choose a leader from outside the company.
