BERLIN : A German court today convicted and handed prison sentences, some suspended, to four former Volkswagen (VW) managers over their part in the 'dieselgate' emissions-cheating scandal, Bloomberg reported.
The scandal has caused waves in the global car industry since September 2015, when Volkswagen admitted tampering with millions of diesel vehicles to dupe pollution tests.
Former VW executive Heinz-Jakob Neusser received a suspended jail term of one year and three months from the court in the city of Braunschweig, according to news agency Bloomberg.
The former head of drive electronics, named only as Hanno J, was given a sentence of two years and seven months, German media reported.
The heaviest sentence of four years and six months was given to the former head of diesel motor development, Jens Hwhile the fourth defendant was given a suspended sentence of one year and 10 months.
The defendants can appeal against the rulings.
The separate trial of former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn remains suspended because of his ill health.
Auto sector analyst Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, head of the Center Automotive Research, judged that the case had for now ended 'with scapegoats and, in some cases, suspended sentences'.
Volkswagen said in a statement that the 'proceedings in the court in Braunschweig are against individuals' and that they had 'no significant consequences for the cases before the civil courts that Volkswagen is involved in' related to the scandal.
The four found guilty today, who have been on trial since 2021, were initially set to have their cases heard alongside that of Winterkorn.
However, the court decided to split off proceedings against Winterkorn, who was unable to appear because of ill health.
The former auto executive finally went on trial in September before the court again suspended proceedings in October, when he was not fit to take the stand.
The highest-ranking former executive to have been convicted in the scandal so far is former Audi CEO Rupert Stadler.
He was was fined and given a suspended sentence in 2023 after admitting to fraud by negligence.
In February, prosecutors in France called for Volkswagen to face charges of aggravated fraud there too.
They said nearly one million French customers had to pay for servicing and repairs after the emissions breach was revealed.

EVs boost German auto sales, Tesla falls again
Tesla, which has suffered across Europe due to anger that Elon Musk played a role as a key advisor to US President Donald Trump, saw its sales slide by 36%. (AP pic) FRANKFURT : A jump in electric car sales helped give a slight boost to Germany's troubled auto market last month, official data showed today, although Elon Musk's Tesla fared poorly again. A total of 239,297 new vehicles were registered in May in Europe's top car market, 1.2% more than the same month last year, the KBA federal transport authority said. The number of electric vehicles (EVs) registered jumped 45%, as the segment continues a tentative recovery following a downturn last year triggered by the removal of government subsidies. This offset declines for petrol and diesel vehicle sales. However, electric car maker Tesla, which has suffered across Europe due to anger that Musk played a role as a key advisor to US President Donald Trump, saw its sales slide again, this time by 36%. The US billionaire has faced particular hostility in Germany for backing the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) before February's general election. Musk left his role as an advisor to Trump last week, although it is not yet clear what impact this could have on Tesla's fortunes. Registrations of BYD cars jumped more than 800% from a year earlier, to nearly 1,860 vehicles, although the Chinese EV giant is just beginning to make inroads in Germany. EY analyst Constantin Gall said many EV manufacturers had 'significantly reduced the price difference between combustion engines and comparable EVs, and are also offering very attractive financing or leasing conditions for electric cars'. The German auto market has performed weakly in recent years, and is still about 28% below pre-pandemic levels, according to EY. 'The market is moving sideways and not advancing – neither in Germany nor in Europe,' said Gall.

High Court dismisses Anwar's bid to refer PM immunity questions to Federal Court, says no constitutional issues
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — The High Court here today dismissed Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's application to refer eight legal questions to the Federal Court, including whether the Prime Minister enjoys immunity from lawsuits. The legal questions relate to a lawsuit filed by Anwar's former research assistant, Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, concerning an alleged sexual assault seven years ago. Judge Roz Mawar Rozain made the ruling after finding that none of the articles of a Federal Constitution (FC) cited by Anwar's legal team give rise to any real, substantial or justiciable question of constitutional law requiring determination by the Federal Court under Article 128(2) of the FC or Section 84 of Courts of Judicature Act 1964. 'From a judicial perspective, the proposed questions do not appear to meet the threshold of genuine constitutional controversy,' she said. The Prime Minister filed the application on May 23, seeking the High Court, which is hearing the suit, to refer the eight legal questions to the Federal Court. — Bernama

Flekken returns to Bundesliga as Leverkusen's new No. 1
MUNICH, June 4 — Bayer Leverkusen have signed Netherlands goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Premier League side Brentford, the Bundesliga club announced on Tuesday. German media reported Leverkusen paid €10 million (RM48 million) to secure the 31-year-old's services. Flekken, who signed a deal running to 2028, will likely take over from current Leverkusen goalie Lukas Hradecky, who captained the side to their historic unbeaten league and cup double in 2023-24. In a statement, Flekken said he was taking 'another special step in my career', adding that Leverkusen are 'a top German club with high national and European goals'. Leverkusen are expected to undergo a rebuild this off-season, with former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag having already replaced the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso as coach. Centre-back Jonathan Tah signed on a free transfer with German champions Bayern Munich, while midfielder Florian Wirtz is in talks to join wing-back Jeremie Frimpong in moving to Premier League winners Liverpool. The Dutch 'keeper has Bundesliga experience, having spent five years at Freiburg before making the switch to Brentford in 2023. — AFP
