Why Are Smart Chennai Homes Choosing Solar As A Smart Investment Option?

The Hindu25-06-2025
Most parts of India witness scorching heat and soaring temperatures during the summer. With this most households start witnessing soaring electricity bills. As cooling needs rise, homeowners find themselves paying hefty electricity bills that only increase over time. However, some homes who have shifted to a smarter, more sustainable solution are saving big on electricity bills.
Across India, lakhs of families have already made the switch to rooftop solar, not just to reduce bills but also to invest in their future and safeguard themselves against rising electricity costs.
Rooftop Solar Is Not A Cost, But An Investment
Rooftop solar lets you generate your electricity using solar panels installed on your home's rooftop. Chennai receives approximately 300 days of sunlight per year, making it an ideal choice for solar energy generation in India.
With a one-time investment in a rooftop solar system, you can cut your electricity bills by up to 90%. Paying for solar, therefore, does not become a cost; it becomes an investment.
The 25-year saving advantage
Let's assume your average monthly electricity bill is approximately ₹4,500 - ₹5,000. Annually, you will spend approximately ₹53,000 on your electricity bills. Assuming a tariff of ₹7.6 per unit, your annual consumption would stand at ~7000 units, for which you would need a 5 kW system.
Now, here's where solar starts to shine.
A 5 kW system produces ~7050 units annually.
Over 25 years, that can lead to savings of ~₹68,000 per year, adding up to ~₹17–18 lakhs in total.
Solar doesn't just cut costs — it builds wealth, with a 23 %+ IRR over its lifespan.
Rooftop Solar Gives Better Returns Than Traditional Investments
As you can see in the above example, if you spend ₹1.3-1.5 Lakh (after subsidy) for a 3kW installation, your savings on electricity bills over a period of 25 years comes to ~₹10-11 Lakhs - which is more than 25% internal rate of return.
FDs typically offer 6-7% returns annually and are taxed. Gold appreciates slowly and doesn't offer yearly savings.
Rooftop solar clearly offers 3x higher returns than fixed deposits, nearly double the returns from gold, and even outperforms most mutual funds.
Plus, government subsidies under PM Surya Ghar Yojana can reduce your system cost significantly by up to ₹78,000 for homeowners.
Not all Rooftop Solar Are The Same.
In Chennai's cyclone-prone climate, durability and quality matter. Many fly-by-night solar vendors cut corners, use substandard materials, and provide solar systems that fail to perform in the long run, leading to poor generation, risky rooftop installations, and zero after-sale support. All this can put your home and investment at risk.
That's where SolarSquare comes in — a company that's rethinking rooftop solar to adapt to India's changing weather conditions.
Rooftop Solar designed specially for cities like Chennai
At SolarSquare, rooftop solar goes beyond just installing panels - safety, savings, and service are engineered into every system.

Gujarat sees 50% surge in solar power, becomes India's fastest-growing state in FY25

Gujarat recorded a sharp 50 per cent surge in solar power generation in FY 2024-25, emerging as the fastest-growing state in India in terms of annual increase. The state generated 20,219.48 million units (MUs) of solar electricity in FY25, up from 13,468.91 MUs in FY24, according to data tabled in Parliament by the Union ministry of new and renewable energy. Over just two years, Gujarat nearly doubled its solar output, which stood at 10,335.32 MUs in FY23, signalling its rapid transition to renewable energy. With this performance, the state now ranks second in the country in total solar power generation, behind Rajasthan, which recorded 49,101.62 MUs in FY25. Policy support, favourable business conditions and growing industrial interest have all contributed to this momentum. Gujarat's Renewable Energy Policy and its focus on decentralised approach, which has led to the adoption of rooftop and solar park models, have played a key role in ramping up capacity. Kunj Shah, chairman, RE committee, Assocham Gujarat State Council, said, "Residential rooftop solar adoption has seen a strong push, especially due to the PM Surya Ghar Yojana , which offers subsidies and soft loans through banks. Earlier limited to cities, rooftop installations are now gaining ground in rural areas as well. Industries too are increasingly adding captive capacity. Global measures like the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) have also nudged exporters to decarbonise, further accelerating the shift to solar." Industry players point to large-scale solar park investments across Kutch, Banaskantha and Patan districts as a major factor. Companies are setting up captive solar plants to meet their sustainability goals. Falling panel prices have made the switch to clean energy even more economically viable. Jai Prakash Shivahare, managing director, Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL), said, "Gujarat's renewable energy policy is extremely enabling, especially for captive and third-party projects. There are no capacity limits, and many industries are eager to utilise 100 per cent of their sanctioned allowance. Regions like Kutch and Banaskantha offer land availability, which is a major draw for solar park development." "Gujarat's supportive policy ecosystem, with its skilled manpower, reliable vendors and suppliers, and lower operating costs, makes it an attractive state for RE developers. This allows companies to quote more competitive tariffs here," he further added. To support the growing capacity, GUVNL is also expanding transmission infrastructure via GETCO with a planned investment of ₹1 lakh crore.

Solar panels to be installed in 1 lakh houses in Prayagraj's Sangam City by 2027

In order to promote alternative sources of energy and reduce the cost of electricity, the state govt has rolled out 'Surya Rath' across the state to inform people about Prime Minister Surya Ghar Bijali Yojna. These 'Surya Raths' are connecting with the masses in all villages, blocks and cities. In Prayagraj district, the govt has set a target to install around one lakh solar power panels by 2027 in Sangam City. While over 27,000 people have enrolled for registration to install solar power panels, 5,355 solar units have been installed so far. These 5,355 solar units have managed to produce 19,587 KW of solar energy. UPNEDA project manager, Shahid Siddiqui said , "Prayagraj district has registered significant success in installing solar panels under PM Surya Ghar Yojna scheme of the state. We have set a target of installing one lakh solar panels in the district by 2027, whereas registration for installing 27,230 solar panels has been done so far." Moreover, as many as 5,355 solar panels were installed in this scheme in the district. Production of 19,587 KV of solar energy also started in the district by July 19. Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, a subsidy of ₹30,000 from the central govt and ₹15,000 from the state govt (total ₹45,000) is being given on one kilowatt capacity. For two kilowatts, a subsidy of ₹60,000 from the centre and ₹30,000 from the state govt, i.e., a total of ₹90,000 is being given. At the same time, for a load of three kilowatts and above, a subsidy of ₹78,000 from the centre and ₹30,000 from the state govt (total ₹1.08 lakh) is being given. Apart from urban areas, awareness campaigns are being run through various agencies to expand the scheme in rural areas and promote solar energy production. Surya Rath Abhiyan is reaching out to villages where the benefits of the PM Surya Kiran scheme and the need for solar energy are being shared with the rural masses. Siddiqui says that four blocks of the district have been selected for an intensive campaign that includes 20 gram panchayats. Similarly, Shringverpur village of the district is being developed as a model solar village with a budget of ₹1 crore.
