You do not (always) have to get an invasive test done to gauge the health of your brain. If you are otherwise healthy, some really simple home tests can also tell you if all is okay in the brain.
Wondering how? Let's take a look...
The RAM test
The Rapid Alternate Movement (RAM) test is a basic neurological examination, which evaluates the brain-muscle coordination needed to create smooth coordinated movements. The test targets the cerebellum, which functions as the control center for balance together with muscle coordination, and precise movement execution. During the RAM test, you need to perform quick hand flipping motions or finger tapping patterns.
Difficulty with smooth and fast test performance can indicate problems in the brain or nervous system that result from cerebellar dysfunction, which often appears after injuries, strokes and brain-related medical conditions.
What is the Rapid Alternate Movement test
The RAM test evaluates your capability to execute fast repetitive movements using your hands or feet. The examination sometimes goes by the name of dysdiadochokinesia assessment, because it tests rapid alternating movement abilities.
The test requires you to position your hands on your thighs while performing repeated palm flips upwards, then downwards, or to perform rapid thumb tapping between your fingers in sequence followed by sequence reversal.
The assessment evaluates how fluidly and rapidly you perform the movements. Slow, uncoordinated or clumsy movements during the test can suggest problems with the cerebellum. Doctors utilise this examination to evaluate brain operations and coordination, primarily focusing on the cerebellum.
How to perform the RAM test at home
The RAM test has a home version which helps you evaluate your motor skills and coordination abilities. Here's how:
Sit comfortably on a chair with your feet flat on the ground and your hands resting on your thighs.
Place your hands flat on your thighs with the palms down.
Perform quick hand movements by facing your palms up and then immediately facing them back down toward the bottom. Perform these movements as quickly and smoothly as possible for 10 seconds.
The finger tapping version of the test requires you to touch your thumb tip to your index finger tip followed by middle finger tip then ring finger tip and pinky tip before repeating the sequence in reverse order. Execute these movements with maximum speed and fluidity for the entire 10 seconds.
Test each hand separately before combining them into a single hand operation.
Medical evaluation of your brain coordination centers becomes necessary when you experience either speed difficulties, or unsteady movements during the test.
What does the RAM Test tell you
The RAM test functions as a brief assessment tool to evaluate motor coordination capabilities of your brain. Rapid alternating movement problems usually indicate cerebellum, or its connection pathway abnormalities. The conditions of stroke, brain injuries, multiple sclerosis and tumors that impact brain coordination, tend to cause this type of problem. The RAM test cannot diagnose diseases directly, but indicates that you should seek professional neurological evaluation if you experience any difficulty with the test, especially when combined with dizziness, imbalance or weakness.
Limitations of the RAM Test
The RAM test functions as a single component within a complete neurological examination. The test fails to identify the specific nature of the issue, or its precise brain location. Your test performance can be influenced by stress together with tiredness, as well as nutritional deficiencies. However, the test cannot give any precise results on any condition.

I appeal to all citizens, officials, and employees to take a pledge and register for organ donation. This is the noblest way of giving life after life.' As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi, the 'Angdaan— Jeevan Sanjeevan Abhiyan' (Organ Donation Awareness Campaign) was conducted across Maharashtra from August 3 to August 15, 2025. In Pune, the civic body, as part of the campaign, organized public lectures, poster exhibitions, pledge walls, tree plantation drives, street plays, competitions, and rallies to raise awareness. The aim was to dispel myths, promote scientific thinking, and inspire citizens to pledge to organ and body donation after death. The campaign has received an overwhelming response from citizens, said the officials.

Upasana Konidela reveals husband Ram Charan's go-to comfort food: ‘It is good for your throat'

Upasana Konidela recently opened up about her love for food, and her culinary escapades across the globe with her husband and actor Ram Charan. However, Upasana was quick to add that Ram's go-to is homemade South Indian dishes. 'Rasam rice with omelette,' she shared in a conversation with CurlyTales. 'This is Ram's favourite course. This is rasam rice, his comfort food, his go-to food for anything. He just loves rasam. Sometimes, he will put it in a blender and eat it like a soup, too. He needs that omelette with it to make it authentic for him. This food travels with him anywhere. You give him fresh rasam, hot rice, and an omelette…and he is in heaven,' said Upasana, who has been married to Ram for 13 years. She added, 'Great for winters. It is good for your throat. And it's his comfort food.' Taking a cue from her candid admission, let's explore if this combination is worth your time. A plate of rasam rice with a warm omelette is more than just comfort food; it's a reminder that traditional meals can be simple, tasty, and nourishing all at once. Rasam rice is a tangy, spiced broth that is light but full of flavour. The omelette adds protein, filling you up and providing comfort. 'Together, these two dishes combine to make a simple, balanced plate that will offer you carbohydrates, protein, and antioxidants along with the comfort that this dish provides. The warmth of the rasam supports digestion, and the omelette is filling enough to keep you satisfied for several hours,' said Dt. Gulnaaz Shaikh, chief dietitian, KIMS Hospitals, Thane. Generally, rasam is prepared with ingredients that have digestive and immunity benefits along with antioxidant properties, such as tamarind, garlic, pepper, and curry leaves. The omelette is a good protein source for muscle recovery and energy. 'The spices in rasam may help clear nasal congestion and give a sense of warmth during cooler weather or when feeling under the weather. Together, the dish is light on the stomach but still nutrient-dense,' said Shaikh. This combination works well for people who want a balanced yet light lunch or dinner. 'It's suitable for those recovering from mild illness, as it's easy to digest and provides both energy and nourishment. It can also be a good post-workout meal when paired with extra vegetables or a side of salad to boost micronutrients,' said Shaikh. What should people note when having this combination? The dietitian adds that while it's a wholesome meal, people managing weight or blood sugar should keep an eye on rice quantity and focus on adding more protein and fibre. Portion size plays a big role. According to Shaikh, a moderate serving of rice, plenty of rasam, and an omelette cooked with minimal oil is the ideal balance. 'To enhance the nutrients, you can consider adding vegetables like onions, tomatoes, spinach, or capsicum. This would also increase the fibre and vitamins,' Shaikh said. In addition, you can opt for brown rice or semi-bleached rice if you want a more nutritious version of the dish without compromising the tradition.
