Shivrajyabhishek Sohala to be grand cultural gathering

Nagpur: Citizens are looking forward to witnessing the celebrations planned for the Shivrajyabhishek Sohala, the coronation ceremony of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj , in all its grandeur for two days, beginning Monday. The historic day as per the traditional Jyeshtha Shukla Trayodashi Tithi falls on June 9 this year, but the festivities began on Sunday itself. On Sunday morning, a rally was taken out from Ram Nagar, where scores of citizens, including school children, cultural groups and history enthusiasts, marched with saffron flags and in traditional attire while singing powadas (ballads) invoking the valour and vision of the Maratha king. In the evening, a Gondhal event was held in front of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Mahal. The main event of the Shivrajyabhishek Sohala will take place on Monday at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk in Mahal. Shri Shivrajyabhishek Sohala Samiti, which has been organising the event for years, has lined up cultural programmes, traditional games and interactive competitions aimed at creating awareness among citizens about the enduring legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Adding a historical touch to the celebration, an exhibition on replicas of forts is already on display at the venue, giving citizens — especially the younger generation — a glimpse into the architectural ingenuity and strategic brilliance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's era. On Monday evening, a cultural programme will celebrate Maratha pride through performances, storytelling and folk music. The event is expected to draw large crowds from across the city. The festivities will continue on Tuesday, June 10, at Suresh Bhat Hall, where renowned orator Amar Kulkarni will deliver a motivational talk on the life, leadership and governance model of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, shedding light on the deeper meaning of Swarajya and its relevance today.

'Revival Stories' at Swadesh reimagines Paithani like never before

Once they decided Paithani was their next chapter, the first step was immersion. The team at Swadesh travelled to Paithan and Aurangabad, home to this legendary weave, and spent months working closely with master weavers and textile historians. The process involved studying heirloom sarees, some over 150 years old, stored in family trunks and private collections. They traced motifs, deciphered weaving techniques that had nearly vanished, and engaged in patient dialogue with artisans whose knowledge is often passed down orally over generations. One of the most extraordinary moments in this journey came through their collaboration with renowned textile revivalist, Ajay Bhoj. A custodian of generational wisdom, Ajay opened the doors to a rare and remarkable archive, an heirloom collection of sarees and dupattas dating back nearly 200 years, handcrafted by his forefathers for the queens of royal families. Among these treasures was a Paithani saree, its colours still vivid, its zari untouched by time. The craftsmanship was breathtaking with floral vines in full bloom, parrots with intricate plumage, and motifs rendered with a finesse rarely seen today. Ajay recounted how his great-grandfather had woven the piece for a Maratha queen, using techniques that are now almost lost to time.
