Warning to Portugal holidaymakers over 'unacceptable' airport queues and 3 hour delays
Holidaymakers heading to Portugal this summer are facing lengthy delays and 'unacceptable' queues. Tourists arriving at the country's Faro airport are said to increasingly be dealing with queues and up to three hour delays when going through passport control and there are fears that the airport is not ready for the height of the season.
One passenger, Edward Carter, said he travels between the UK and Faro airport regularly and spoke about the nightmare delays he endured on Sunday, May 18. He told the Portugal Resident he was shocked at the situation and that he was told he couldn't make a complaint to anyone.
Mr Carter said: "The delays occurred in the aftermath of a large number of flight arrivals, but the passenger numbers were apparently as expected.
"In fact, on the day of the delay, passengers on Jet2, for example, were sent text messages warning of the delay at about 5am.'
He went on: 'The delay was unacceptable, affecting as it did, so many people with special assistance needs, senior citizens and also families with small children.
"In the area of the queue there was inadequate access to toilets and no water, which would have affected vulnerable travellers with health issues for example.'
When Mr Carter asked if he could make a complaint to senior management or a senior border police officer, he was told he couldn't.
He said that he had heard that Faro Airport is the only one in the Algarve under such strain and he called for immediate action to sort the situation.
He said: "I was told that Faro is the only airport in Portugal where these delays are suffered and the issue seems to be down to lack of management planning and organisation.
"The tourist industry is going to be adversely affected if passengers face delays like this and no-one admits responsibility. There needs to be an enquiry into what is going wrong so remedial action can be taken'.
The Portugal Resident also heard from James Brooks, a British property owner in the Algarve. He said that he was going so far as to sell his home because of the airport waiting times.
He said: "In my experience, the waiting times have been worse than ever this year.
'This needs exposing. I'm a property owner in the Algarve and we are now selling because of the airport experience."
Meanwhile, APAL – Agência de Promoção de Albufeira, the town's tourism promotion agency, said they had 'deep concern' about the long queues and delays at the airport, warning that such issues jeopardise the region's image and economic health.
They added: "It is fundamental to stress that this is not an isolated incident.
"The repetition of these failures compromises the quality of the tourism offering in the Algarve and undermines the perception of efficiency in our welcoming services.'
The director of ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, Francisco Vieira Pita, blamed the upgrading of the airport's Internal Security System for delays and waiting times.
He insisted this is a 'temporary' situation while adding that staffing issues within PSP police are beyond the airport's control.

For the adults, there's a nearby local vineyard where you can sample wines and gins. Plus, the historic city of Colchester is only a short drive away. From the holiday site, it's a very short walk down to the coast where there's lots of sand, sun, and rock pools - which makes for a very traditional seaside getaway. Around the park you can splash about in the heated indoor pool, run around on the adventure playground or have a game of basketball or netball on the multi-sports court. The beach destinations in Northumberland are some of the most popular in the country from Bamburgh to Alnmouth, and Embleton. The new rules British tourists in the EU will have to follow
The changes include proof of medical insurance and a return ticket, and are part of a new digital system made from arrivals being introduced by the European Union. The system, which will begin on October 12, will see all non-EU passport holders have their fingerprints and photograph taken the first time they use it. Plus, all passengers will be asked a series of questions to confirm proof of accommodation and sufficient funds. All to know about the new rules British tourists face in the EU The new system, called the entry and exit system (EES), will come into place for airports, ferry ports and all other border crossings. EES has been designed to track border crossing digitally using fingerprints and facial recognition. The system will replace passport stamping at border control when arriving or leaving a country. How does the exit and entry system work? EES will mean all travellers from outside of the EU will be known as third-country nationals and will have to register passport details and biometric data when entering an EU country. Borders will have self-service style kiosks where passengers will be able to share the information. The data will be kept for future visits, which means that all future visits only require verification of the biometric data. Visitors will still be asked questions by border officials relating to proof of accommodation, money, insurance and a return ticket. Are children exempt from the new EU rules for British travellers? Children are not exempt from the new changes; children under 12 will be required to have their faces scanned, but they will not need to give fingerprints. What countries will use the EES system? Jet2 launch new route from UK airport to Greek island loved for its sandy beaches
The weekly service will start from May 26, 2026 and will run every Tuesday until October 20, 2026 giving travellers the opportunity to enjoy the sun-soaked hotspot Scots and those living in the north of England dreaming of a Greek escape can fly directly to an island famed for its sandy beaches and rich history. From next summer, will operate flights from Glasgow Airport to Kos. The weekly service will commence on May 26 2026 and will run every Tuesday until October 20 2026. It comes as news emerges that UK beachgoers risk £2,500 fine for causing common problem. Now Scots have a direct route to the island of Kos, making it sixth Greek destination from Glasgow, which also includes Corfu, Heraklion (Crete), Kefalonia, Rhodes and Zante. Holidaymakers can seize the opportunity to explore Kos's diverse range of historical sights, stunning scenery and golden beaches, reports the Daily Record. Part of the breathtaking Dodecanese Islands, Kos has long been a favourite for sunshine holidays. Holidaymakers can choose from lively party towns, relaxed seaside resorts and traditional fishing villages – all boasting beautiful beaches and serving up traditional cuisine. Kos, with its rich culture and history, is an island where ancient relics sit side by side with vibrant bars and bustling promenades. Passengers can also benefit from the airline's generous 22kg baggage allowance. Steve Heapy, CEO of and Jet2holidays, has said that the popularity of Greek getaways shows no signs of waning. He stated: "Demand from customers and independent travel agents in Scotland is telling us that flights and holidays to Greece are very popular for Summer 26. "As the largest airline and tour operator to Greece from Scotland, we have responded quickly to that demand to give customers even more choice from Glasgow Airport. "Kos is a magical destination, and we know its appeal, coupled with our award-winning customer experience, will make it an extremely popular option for holidaymakers looking to book a welcome escape to Greece." "Expanded flight options to Greece have been sought after by Glasgow passengers for some time and the market dynamics clearly show the increasing trend of people in West Scotland searching for travel to this part of Europe. "We are delighted to see respond to this demand with an expanded Greek programme for Summer 2026. Glasgow Airport looks forward to welcoming even more Greek-bound passengers from the city and the wider West Scotland region travelling from their local airport next year."
