Ford's new line of affordable EVs to start at about $30,000

Reutersa day ago
DETROIT, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Ford plans to start rolling out its new family of affordable electric vehicles in 2027, including a midsize pickup truck with a target starting price of $30,000, the company said on Monday, as it aspires to the cost efficiency of Chinese rivals.
The new midsize four-door pickup will be assembled at the automaker's Louisville, Kentucky, plant. Ford (F.N), opens new tab is investing nearly $2 billion in the plant, which produces the Escape and Lincoln Corsair, retaining at least 2,200 jobs, it said in a statement.
Chinese carmakers such as BYD (002594.SZ), opens new tab have streamlined their supply chain and production system to produce EVs at a fraction of the cost of Western automakers. While these vehicles have yet to enter the U.S. market, Ford CEO Jim Farley said they set a new standard that companies like Ford must match.
'We have all lived through far too many 'good college tries' by Detroit automakers to make affordable vehicles that ends up with idled plants, layoffs and uncertainty. So, this had to be a strong, sustainable and profitable business," Farley said in a release Monday.
Ford has been developing its affordable EVs through its so-called skunkworks team, filled with talent from EV rivals Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab and Rivian (RIVN.O), opens new tab. The California-based group, led by former Tesla executive Alan Clarke, has set itself so much apart from the larger Ford enterprise that Farley said even his badge could not get him into its building for some time.
EVs sold for an average of about $47,000 in June, J.D. Power data showed. Many Chinese models sell for $10,000 to $25,000.
Affordability is a top concern among EV shoppers, auto executives have said, and the global competition for delivering cheaper electric models is heating up.
EV startup Slate, backed by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, is aiming for a starting price in the mid-$20,000s for its electric pickup. Tesla has teased a cheaper model, with production ramping up later this year. Rivian and Lucid (LCID.O), opens new tab are also planning to roll out lower-priced models for their lineups, although price points are in the $40,000s to $50,000s.
Since rolling out plans earlier this decade to push hard into EVs, Ford has pulled back as the losses piled up. It has scaled back many of its EV goals, canceled an electric three-row SUV, and axed a program to develop a more advanced electrical architecture for future models.
Ford last year announced it would start building its midsize truck from the skunkworks team in 2027.
The automaker earlier this year estimated losing up to $5.5 billion on its EV and software division. It lost nearly $10 billion combined on those operations from 2023 to 2024.
Cutting costs on battery-powered models has been one of the primary goals of Farley, who has said he expects this new family of EVs to be profitable within one year.
Ford sells three EVs in the U.S.: the Mustang Mach-E SUV, E-Transit van, and F-150 Lightning pickup. Sales of those vehicles fell 12% in the first half from the year-ago period. Meanwhile, interest in hybrids has surged, with sales up 27% over the same window. Ford recently pushed back production of its next-generation F-150 Lightning and E-Transit to 2028.
The elimination of a $7,500 consumer tax credit, loosening regulations on emissions and reduced funding for charging infrastructure are expected to further dampen demand.
All this makes it more important for automakers to pick their lanes, Farley has said.
"The pure EV market in the U.S. seems to us very clear: small vehicles used for commuting and around town," Farley told analysts on an earnings call last month.
By contrast, crosstown rival General Motors (GM.N), opens new tab has electrified vehicles across its entire lineup, from the hulking Hummer to the smaller Equinox SUV. GM spent more time upfront building a ground-up platform as a base for its EV models.
Meanwhile, Ford has reconfigured many of its popular gasoline-powered vehicles with batteries to get to market sooner, delaying the development and launch of a unified EV platform, details of which it unveiled on Monday.
While being out front has exposed Ford to more EV demand fluctuations over the past two years, it has also learned more about the market, Farley has said.
Ford is using lithium-iron-phosphate, or LFP batteries, for the forthcoming family of EVs. The batteries are produced in Marshall, Michigan, using technology from Chinese EV-battery maker CATL that has helped to bring down the sticker price of electric cars.

This Polestar just went nearly 600 MILES without charging on real UK roads!

Unmodified Polestar 3 beats its official range by 143 miles and sets a new benchmark for EV SUVs Open gallery Polestar 3 used for the attempt was completely factory-spec SUV achieved efficiency of 5.1 miles per kilowatt hour during the run Close The Polestar 3 has claimed the world record for the longest distance travelled by an electric SUV on one charge, cracking nearly 600 miles in one hit on UK roads. The new Long Range version of Polestar's flagship SUV, with a 107kWh battery and a single 295bhp motor on the rear axle, managed 581.3 miles of driving around the east of England. That comfortably beats the 3's 438-mile official range and smashes the previous record of 569.64 miles, set by the Ford Mustang Mach-E last year. The distance travelled equates to a final efficiency figure of 19.5kWh per 100 miles, or 5.13mpkWh, which is in line with the official WLTP efficiency figures of some small electric cars weighing around two-thirds as much as the 2.4-tonne 3. Polestar said the SUV continued for eight miles after the battery charge readout reached 0% and still managed to get to a charger, suggesting it could even have gone slightly farther. Crucially, the car used for the attempt was completely unmodified – even using the standard Michelin Sport 4 EV tyres – and the attempt was carried out on open public roads, including single-track lanes, dual carriageways and B-roads. The news comes a week after Chevrolet revealed its new Silverado EV pickup truck had managed a whopping 1060 miles on a single charge, but that was with light modifications in place and took seven days to complete. Furthermore, the Chevy's 205kWh battery pack is around twice the size of the Polestar's and it averaged 4.9mpkWh, compared with the Swedish car's 5.1mpkWh. The current outright range record for an unmodified electric car, as recognised by Guinness World Records, is held by the Lucid Air. However, the Polestar's record-chasing run was undertaken in conditions that better reflect real-world driving so is more relevant to consumers, explained Sam Clarke, one of three drivers who piloted the car during the attempt. 'This is a 'journey' record, which means that we use public roads, we have to adhere to normal speed limits and we can't go over the same road twice, so effectively we do one very large loop, as best we can.' That last requirement presented a significant obstacle, as not only did it become increasingly difficult to avoid previously used roads while remaining on the flat ground needed to maximise range, but it also meant that any late changes to the route could have quashed the team's chances of setting a record. 'We did have one particular jeopardy when we got to Melton Mowbray at the very tail end of the run and it turned out there was a cycle race on the next day, so a load of the roads were closed. Every time we tried to change direction, we found another road closure and another road closure...' said Clarke. Fortunately, some quick thinking from the navigator got the team back on a diversion route without having too drastic an impact on remaining range. Clarke said the journey record is more relevant than the outright range record because 'it's the closest thing to the real world, on proper roads at proper speeds'. He added: 'We're not suggesting for a second that everybody can achieve the same ranges that we did, but we did exceed the WLTP figures by some margin, so it just shows what's possible. Driving a little bit more efficiently – which ultimately equates to just moving your right foot a few less millimetres each time – can actually generate significant amounts of range'. Figures like this, while not necessarily achievable in everyday driving, help to show that 'EVs really can go a long way now', Clarke said, and 'the range anxiety phraseology we've seen in our industry for many years is rapidly diminishing'. Clarke, who has taken part in several previous EV record-breaking runs (including the Mustang Mach-E one last year), said range anxiety as a concept is 'definitely dying' but 'the infrastructure still needs to continue to improve as the technology advances in the vehicles as well'. FTC resolves 'Clean Truck Partnership' antitrust concerns

WASHINGTON, Aug 12 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Trade Commission said on Tuesday it had resolved antitrust concerns arising from the "Clean Truck Partnership," which involves major truck manufacturers. Under the Clean Truck Partnership, four manufacturers —Daimler Truck, International Motors, PACCAR, and Volvo Group— agreed in 2023 to abide by a series of California Air Resources Board regulations limiting truck sales and greenhouse gas emissions, the commission said.

Ford recalls 103,000 F-150 trucks over problem that ‘increases the risk of a crash'

Ford has recalled about 103,000 F-150 trucks over a problem that 'increases the risk of a crash,' according to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The car manufacturer recalled certain F-150 trucks from 2023 to 2025 due to the potential for the rear axle hub bolt, which secures the wheel to the truck, to break, which can damage the axle hub splines. Damaged axle hub splines can cause the truck to roll away when in park if the parking brake is not on, or it can cause 'a loss of drive power,' the administration said. 'Either of these conditions can increase the risk of a crash,' according to the documents. The affected vehicles are 'equipped with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package and a 9.75-inch heavy duty axle with a 3/4 float axle design,' the administration said. A spokesperson for Ford told CBS MoneyWatch it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the recalled trucks. Owners of the recalled trucks will be notified in letters expected to be sent out starting next Monday. Ford dealers will replace the left and right rear axle shaft assemblies at no cost to the owner. Ford has announced several recalls this summer. Earlier this month, The Independent reported on a recall of more than 312,000 Ford vehicles over a brake assist defect that may increase stopping distance and crash risk. Certain 2025 Lincoln Navigator, F-150, Expedition, Bronco, and Ranger models were recalled. In July, Ford recalled 700,000 Bronco and Escape models due to a fuel leak risk that could cause a fire inside the vehicle's engine. The Wall Street Journal reported that Ford had more safety recalls through the first half of the year than any other carmaker has ever had in a full year.
