The minister underlined the government's continued efforts to empower minority institutions like the Central Waqf Council (CWC) and ensure transparent governance.
Referring to recent legislative progress, he highlighted the Waqf (Amendment) Act, which strengthens the legal and administrative framework for managing Waqf properties.
Live Events
The CWC, a statutory body under the administrative control of the Ministry of Minority Affairs, was set up in 1964 in accordance with the provisions of the Waqf Act, 1954 as an advisory body to the Centre on matters concerning the working of Waqf boards and the due administration of Waqf properties.
During the interaction, Rijiju announced the upcoming launch of the "UMEED" central portal, scheduled to go live on Friday (June 6). The portal will facilitate the digitisation and registration of Waqf properties, enhancing transparency, governance and utilisation.
"State governments and Waqf boards must actively upload and manage data to ensure that more than nine lakh Waqf properties are utilised meaningfully, especially for the welfare of women and children," the minister said.
The event was led by Rijiju and he was joined by Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying George Kurian and Secretary, Ministry of Minority Affairs, Chandra Shekhar Kumar, along with senior officials of the ministry and the CWC.
The initiative was aimed at encouraging citizens to plant a tree in honour of their mothers, blending emotional tribute with
environmental responsibility
.
In his address to the media, Rijiju emphasised India's global leadership in ecological conservation.
He said India is making significant contributions to increase the green cover through plantation drives etc.
"We are not just committed to preserving the environment, we are actively reclaiming and restoring the ecological balance," he said.
The plantation drive saw active participation from all levels of the ministry. Officials and staff members planted saplings in the name of their mothers, reinforcing the emotional and symbolic depth of the initiative.
The drive was not just a ceremonial gesture but a meaningful action towards promoting sustainable practices and deepening the community's bond with nature, an official statement said.
The ministry's observance of World Environment Day through "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" highlighted its broader commitment to environmental stewardship, inclusivity and responsive governance, it added.
Rijiju also took a moment to express condolences for the victims of a recent stampede in Bengaluru.

Postpone APSC exams: Aspirants
Guwahati: Aspirants preparing for the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) preliminary test scheduled for June 8 have urged authorities to postpone the examination in view of the devastating floods that have disrupted their preparation and displaced many candidates. The plea for postponement comes after incessant rainfall across Assam over the past week caused widespread flooding, washing away study materials and forcing numerous aspirants to seek refuge in relief camps. "The APSC examination is a critical opportunity for thousands of aspirants seeking public service positions. Conducting the exam under these adverse conditions would be unjust and discriminatory, particularly to candidates from marginalised and flood-hit regions. A postponement is essential to ensure a level playing field," said Nabadeep Borgohain, general secretary, Satro Mukti Sangram Samiti. Asom Chatro Parishad (ACP) president, Trinayan Barua expressed that the current government has been conducting various recruitment exams in a transparent way, so we request the government, along with APSC, to look into aspirants' concerns hailing from flood-affected areas. Many aspirants have reported losing study material to the floods. Several areas in Lakhimpur district were inundated after North Eastern Electric Power Corporation's (NEEPCO's) Ranganadi Dam in upstream Arunachal Pradesh released water. For an aspirant, the last 10-15 days before the exam are very crucial, but I had to move to a relief camp. Mediation between two unequals not possible: Shashi Tharoor on Trump's claims
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has said that to suggest one can mediate between two unequals is not possible because there is no equivalence between terrorists and their victims, amid repeated claims by US President Donald Trump that he "helped settle" the tensions between India and Pakistan. Tharoor, currently in the US leading a multi-party delegation on Operation Sindoor , made the comments in response to a question during a conversation at the Council on Foreign Relations here Thursday. "...Mediation is not a term that we are particularly willing to entertain. I'll tell you why not. The fact is that this implies, even when you say things like broker or whatever, you're implying an equivalence which simply doesn't exist," Tharoor said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo He said there is no equivalence between terrorists and their victims. "There is no equivalence between a country that provides safe haven to terrorism, and a country that's a flourishing multi-party democracy that's trying to get on with its business," he said. Live Events "There is no equivalence between a state that is a status quo power that just wants to be left alone by its neighbours, where the neighbours don't agree with us, and a revisionist power that wants to upset the geopolitical arrangements that have existed for the last three-quarters of a century. There is no equivalence possible in these cases, and in these circumstances, to suggest that you can mediate between two unequals is not possible," Tharoor added. Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a "full and immediate" ceasefire after a "long night" of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim over a dozen times that he "helped settle" the tensions between India and Pakistan. He has also claimed that he told the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours that America would do a "lot of trade" with them if they stopped the conflict. On being asked how he would characterize the American role in the conflict, Tharoor said he is "guessing to some degree" that the American role would have been first of all to keep themselves informed, conversations on both sides, and "certainly my government received a number of calls at high levels from the US government, and we appreciated their concern and their interest." He said that at the same time, the US must have been making similar calls at the highest levels to the Pakistan side, and "our assumption is that's where, because that's the side that needed persuading to stop this process, that may well have been where their messages really had the greatest effect. But that's guesswork on my part. I don't know what they said to the Pakistanis." Trump repeated the claim as recently as Thursday when during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Oval Office, the US President said that he is "very proud" that he was able to stop the conflict between nuclear powers India and Pakistan. "I spoke to some very talented people on both sides, very good people on both sides" and said that Washington will not do any trade deals with either "if you are going to go shooting each other and whipping out nuclear weapons that may be even affect us. Because you know that nuclear dust blows across oceans very quickly, it affects us," Trump said. "You know what, I got that war am I going to get credit? I'm not going to get credit for anything. They don't give me credit for anything. But nobody else could have done it. I stopped it. I was very proud of that," Trump added. About two weeks after the horrific April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir in which 26 civilians were killed, India launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7. India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes. India has been maintaining that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two militaries.

The LG observed that the inauguration of the world's tallest Chenab Railway Bridge and the country's first cable-stayed Anji Rail Bridge will ensure that J-K gets connected with new aspirations of progress. "The skills of our engineers to build Chenab and Anji bridges, and the hard work of our workers who carved through the mountains have eliminated the gaps that existed between the 'crown jewel of India' and the rest of the country," Sinha said. He said the prime minister has changed the Union Territory (UT) of J-K in the last six years. "Its holistic development is the top priority for the prime minister and his various policies, speedy implementation and industrialisation have brought the Union Territory to the focal point of growth. "He built strong pillars of economic development in J-K and now laid new lines of destiny in the form of railway lines on it to transform J-K at a new pace," he said. Sinha said since April 2022, Modi has dedicated and laid the foundation stone of development projects worth over Rs 1.15 lakh crore to the people of J-K. He also expressed his gratitude to the prime minister for ensuring firm and decisive action against terrorism and its ecosystem. "Operation Sindoor avenged the barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam and has drawn a new red line. On one hand, the unmatched power of our armed forces is ready to protect the integrity of the nation and on the other, creative power is dedicated to a developed India," the LG said. In a major boost to last-mile connectivity especially in border areas, Sinha said, Modi also laid the foundation stone and inaugurated various road projects. He also inaugurated two flyover projects at Sangrama Junction on National Highway-1 in Srinagar and at Bemina Junction on National Highway-44. These projects will ease traffic congestion and enhance traffic flow for the commuters, the LG said. Sinha said the prime minister also laid the foundation stone of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra worth over Rs 350 crore. "It will be the first medical college in the Reasi district contributing substantially to the healthcare infrastructure in the region," he said.
