The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and opposition INDIA bloc have started a hunt for their candidates for the election to the office of Vice President of India. With numbers favouring the NDA, more names have emerged from the ruling camp in the past three days.
Among the names doing rounds for the NDA's Vice President pick are Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh and Union Minister Ram Nath Thakur.
The ruling camp is keen on fielding a candidate from the backwards or extremely backwards communities as Dhankhar's successor, according to reports. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President JP Nadda met Ram Nath Thakur on Wednesday, sparking speculation about his candidature for the V-P post.
Janata Dal—United's two-time Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar, Ram Nath Thakur, is the son of socialist icon, Bharat Ratna recipient, and former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur.
Currently, the minister of state for agriculture in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet, Ram Nath is credited with carrying forward the movement initiated by Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan, and Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur to empower the underprivileged.
Thakur belongs to the Nai (barber) community under the Extremely Backwards Class (EBC) category, which constitutes more than 36 per cent of Bihar's population. His candidature, if finalised, assumes significance considering the upcoming assembly polls in Bihar.
Thakur is considered close to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The previous Modi government's decision to confer the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, upon the late Karpoori Thakur, Ram Nath Thakur's father, just before the notification of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 was seen as a strong political statement and considered as a synthesis of BJP's Mandir-Mandal politics.
His candidature, if finalised, assumes significance considering the upcoming assembly polls in Bihar.

Pb withdrawal of land pooling policy is victory of farmers: BJP
Chandigarh: Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma on Tuesday said the withdrawal of the land pooling policy by the AAP government is a big victory for farmers and labourers, and that his party's protests put pressure on the state government. He said his party took a clear stand against this scheme from day one that it would not allow acquisition of even an inch of farmers' land. In the face of mounting pressure from farmer bodies and opposition parties, the Punjab government on Monday withdrew its land pooling policy, which it had once termed 'farmer-friendly'. The Punjab BJP on Tuesday held celebrations over the rolling back of the policy. 'Punjab and Punjabiyat have won. It is a big victory of farmers and labourers,' Sharma told reporters here. From day one, when the policy was released, the BJP took a clear stand that it would not let the AAP government acquire even an inch of land, he said. He further accused AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain of 'looting' Punjab. 'Today, everybody knows Punjab is not run by Punjabis,' he said, claiming that AAP leaders sitting in Delhi call the shots. 'They (Delhi-based AAP leaders) brought the land pooling policy to loot Punjab,' the BJP leader charged. 'The BJP held protests at tehsil, block and district levels against the policy. We were to hold a protest, 'Zameen Bachao, Kisan Bachao' in Patiala on August 17. All these things put pressure on the state government,' Sharma said. He demanded that the state government issue a notification about scrapping of the policy. He said, 'Will Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann make a statement to ensure that not even a single inch of land of farmers will be acquired through any other way?' In a brief statement issued on Monday evening, the principal secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development said, 'The government hereby withdraws the land pooling policy dated May 14 and its subsequent amendments.' 'Consequently, all actions, like LOIs (letters of intent) issued, registration done, or any other action taken thereunder shall be reversed henceforth,' the statement said.

Rajanna issue echoes in Assembly, BJP seeks reason for removal
Bengaluru: The removal of K N Rajanna from the Karnataka Cabinet triggered uproar in the Legislative As-sembly on Tuesday, with the opposition BJP demanding to know the reasons for his dismissal. The government, however, refrained from any discussion and tabled the notification on Rajanna's removal from the Council of Ministers. Rajanna, who served as Cooperation Minister, was dropped from the Cabinet on Monday following directions from the Congress high command, party sources said. Rajanna's recent comments on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 'votes theft' allegations during 2024 Lok Sabha polls appear to have cost him his ministerial berth. Placing the notification on Rajanna's sacking before the Assembly after Question Hour and Zero Hour, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil said if any minister left the Council of Ministers, he or she may make a statement with the Speaker's permission, but beyond that, no discussion or explanation can be allowed as per the rulebook. At this point, Deputy Leader of the Opposition Arvind Bellad and senior BJP MLA Suresh Ku-mar demanded that the Chief Minister, and not the Law Minister, address the however, continued, saying that in earlier instances of ministers being removed from gov-ernments, no discussions had been held in the Assembly. 'For example when Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as the Vice President, was there discussion on that?' State BJP President and MLA B Y Vijayendra, Sunil Kumar and others asked, 'how was it an internal matter?'They demanded that the reasons for Rajanna's sacking be disclosed, alleging that he was re-moved for speaking truth regarding Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's allegations against the Elec-tion Commission of India on 'votes theft'. Sunil Kumar said, 'Rajanna has claimed a conspiracy against him, the truth behind it should come out.'
