As Bengaluru's Palace Guttahalli Road turns commuters' nightmare, residents slam civic inaction

Time of India7 hours ago

Bengaluru: What was once a key connector between Palace Guttahalli and Sankey Road has now turned into what locals sarcastically call a "suspension test track" — a crater-ridden, slush-filled stretch that has remained dug up and treacherous for over five months.
The 250-metre stretch on VS Raju Road was undergoing road and sewage pipeline work. But what started as a developmental project has devolved into a daily nightmare for motorists and pedestrians. "It's like navigating a lunar surface. Do ward engineers need GPS to find it?" scoffed a commuter on X. On any given day, motorists can be seen swerving dangerously, trying to dodge potholes, while pedestrians attempt circus-like acrobatics to get across the battered road.
Despite being a major link used by hundreds daily, the road continues to lie in disrepair with potholes, mini-craters, and muddy patches becoming the new normal. With monsoon arriving, waterlogging and overflowing mud have made matters worse, forcing residents to use parallel roads or risk injury navigating the mess.
Vijaykumar R, a frequent commuter, shared his frustration: "The whole road is filled with potholes.

They started this work over six months ago, but for more than two months now, the condition has been unbearable."
Shashvathi B, a student who often uses the road, said pedestrian movement has become almost impossible. "We're supposed to hop, skip, and jump just to reach the main road. Why can't BBMP act fast?"
Local shopkeepers say business has taken a hit as footfall has dropped sharply over the past few months. A chaat vendor, Rajesh Kumar, said that his business dropped from Rs 3,000 a day to just Rs 1,700 owing to a lack of customers. "There's so much dust because of the ongoing works that the customers don't want to come. They worry that dust will enter the food and cause them infections."
Despite repeated complaints, BBMP is yet to restore the road. BBMP officials said the delay is because of pipeline relocation and coordination with BWSSB.

Jeffrey Siow addresses COE system, private-hire cars, ERP 2.0 and EV plans in Singapore

No immediate revisions to COE system, ERP 2.0 rollout ongoing Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow confirmed that the Singapore government will not implement significant changes to the certificate of entitlement (COE) system in the near term. He emphasized that the current focus is on completing the installation of on-board units (OBUs) in all vehicles as part of the ERP 2.0 transition. 'The reality is there won't be space for every Singaporean to own a car in Singapore,' Siow said during a media interview on June 11. He explained that the COE system remains a method to allocate a limited and valuable resource, vehicle ownership, within a land-scarce city-state. Also read: Singapore announces six public holiday long weekends for 2026 by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo On the question of usage-based charging, Siow stated that this may be considered in a future phase of the ERP 2.0 rollout. The system was introduced to replace the aging ERP infrastructure, which had become unsustainable due to unavailable parts. As of June 2025, over 500,000 vehicles in Singapore have been equipped with OBUs. The government aims to complete installation across the country's vehicle fleet, totaling approximately one million, by 2026. Live Events Private-hire cars and COE prices Responding to concerns that private-hire vehicles may be inflating COE prices, Siow challenged that narrative. He pointed out that these services provide pay-per-use access to private transport, potentially reducing the demand for individual car ownership. 'If we didn't have private-hire cars today, actually the reverse would be true, that a large number of these people will feel that they need to buy a car, and then... they will bid the price of the COE up,' Siow said. He added that private-hire cars offer more efficient use of COEs. 'If you had one COE left to allocate, is it better to allocate it to a private car owner, who then drives maybe two trips a day and leaves the car in the garage? Or is it better to share the car among a much larger group of Singaporeans who can have access to the use of a car when they need it? Surely it must be the latter, right?' Also read: Top insolvency lawyer and former Rajah & Tann managing partner Patrick Ang dies at 61 However, Siow indicated that if driving behaviors shift significantly over time, the COE allocation model could be reviewed accordingly. Driver hours and road safety for private-hire sector Siow also addressed questions regarding work hours for private-hire drivers following the recent death of 49-year-old driver Gavin Neo, who reportedly worked up to 15 hours daily. Siow noted that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) does not currently regulate the hours private-hire drivers spend on the road. He added that the unions have not requested regulations on driver hours, citing individual flexibility. Siow said that LTA would consider intervention if accident rates involving private-hire vehicles exceeded those involving private vehicles, which has not been the case. The Workplace Safety and Health Council recommends limiting driver shifts to no more than 12 hours. Siow further commented on ride-hailing company Grab's incentive structures, suggesting they may merit closer review. 'I have a lot of sympathy for (Mr Neo)... The union has reached out to (the family), and we want to see how we can help the family in that particular instance,' he said. EV infrastructure, public transport priorities, and maintenance Siow identified electric vehicles (EVs) as a 'game changer' for urban planning. Because EVs are quiet and non-polluting, roads can be designed closer to or even through buildings. The government has announced that all new car registrations must be cleaner-energy models from 2030. Also read: Trade Tensions & Tariffs: Will Singapore enter a technical recession? 'It is a matter of managing the transition,' Siow said. 'It just takes time for people to switch. We don't want to force them to suddenly have to give up their vehicle for a new one.' On late-night public transport, Siow cited manpower limitations as the main constraint. 'Between choosing to deploy a night bus versus choosing to deploy a new bus service, I have to weigh which is the more immediate priority,' he said. For MRT services, nightly maintenance work limits the feasibility of extending service hours. However, the completion of the Circle Line loop between HarbourFront and Marina Bay may allow partial overnight maintenance while maintaining network connectivity. Siow stated that the current operational pressures are leaning more toward reducing service hours to accommodate maintenance needs rather than extending them.

Govt Plans Mechanical Sweep Of Bad Air Woes

New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta and environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Monday attended a special demonstration showcasing the functioning of mechanical road sweeping (MRS) machines, water sprinklers and advanced anti-smog guns. Govt announced plans to hire similar machines to tackle pollution, one of the most pressing issues the national capital faces, said Gupta. "We are trying to deploy these machines in every constituency to ensure proper cleaning," CM pointed out. She said all cleaning machines were highly advanced and available in different variants, including electric ones. "We are planning to hire electric machines so that they do not add to pollution," she added. Gupta said MRS machines were equipped with multiple functions, including sweeping, cleaning, water loading and unloading, and litter picking. On May 20, the chief minister announced that the cabinet approved a comprehensive sanitation and dust control plan for roads maintained by Public Works Department. According to it, PWD will deploy 250 water sprinklers integrated with anti-smog guns, 70 MRS machines integrated with 210 water sprinklers and anti-smog guns, along with 18 dump vehicles and 18 water tankers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Need a Quick Home Refresh? The high-tech machines included a water sprinkler machine integrated with an anti-smog gun, an electric mechanical road sweeping machine, a CNG mechanical road sweeping machine, a litter-picker machine and a water jetting machine. Each assembly constituency will receive high-tech equipment for controlling air pollution. Delhi will soon be equipped with 460 sprinkler machines, 70 MRS machines, 70 litter-picker machines, water tankers and dust dump vehicles, said CMO. The machines will be equipped with technologies such as GPS, CCTV, AQI monitors, video analytics, mobile apps and IoT sensors. Gupta said air pollution in Delhi was a serious issue. "Dirt and dust accumulating along roads have been continuously deteriorating the capital's air quality, adversely impacting public health. To tackle this challenge, Delhi govt made special provisions in this year's budget for deploying advanced machines for street cleaning." Govt said each electric sweeper was equipped with a sweeping width of 3.5 metres. It can clean 40-45km of roads in one shift and contains an 880-litre water tank, expandable to 2,000 litres. The machine is effective in removing not just dust but also pebbles and small stones. The litter-picker machine, can collect everything from pebbles to glass bottles, can operate in ride-on or walk-along mode. It includes a 220-litre bin and can function for 8-10 hours continuously.

PWD zeroes in on 11 road black spots in need for repair

1 2 Lucknow: The public works department (PWD), in its latest survey, has identified 11 locations where road safety work is required to repair the black spots. While three accident spots are situated within the city, the remaining eight are on the national highways connecting the city with the neighbouring districts. The road stretches where vulnerability was detected, owing to conflicts between motor vehicles, non-motorised vehicles and pedestrians are majorly situated over the Lucknow-Ayodhya road. Kamta crossing in Chinhat, which witnesses regular bottlenecks as city traffic merges with the highway-bound traffic, as well as motorists who ply via Shaheed path, is one of the key black spots. "Road engineering needs to be improved around the intersection. We have requested the local administration and police to get the encroachment and roadside vendors removed. Regular drives are also needed against the e-rickshaw and autorickshaw drivers, and bus drivers need to be sensitised," said an engineer deputed in the city. However, the owner of a stationery shop in the Ismailganj locality along the highway, Vikas Chandra, added, "A lot of vehicle owners are caught unaware and take the mandatory U-turn that was constructed to facilitate movement towards the Allahabad high court building under the flyover. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The concrete embankment created to funnel the vehicle into the U-turn lane is just one foot from the ground, and at night, a lot of vehicles collide into it unknowingly. " Similarly, near Adarsh dhabha on the Faizabad road in Chinhat, measures need to be taken to reduce conflicts. Kisan path intersection, further ahead on the route, is another point where multiple accidents have been reported. Also, near a fuel station situated close to the Barabanki border, the median needs to be strengthened to discourage two-wheelers from plying in the wrong direction. The other locations where repair or improvements are needed include the Vibhuti Khand-Shaheed path intersection near Indira Gandhi Pratisthan, the stretch near Malhaur railway station, and Kumhrawan intersection on Sitapur road, among others. Officials said that a budget of close to Rs 52 lakh will be required for the improvement works. In the past, the most vulnerable black spot was detected around the Gosainganj trisection on the Sultanpur road. However, measures were taken to reduce casualties. Over the years, more than 85 fatal accidents took place over the 500-mt road stretch owing to over-speeding, wrong-side driving and jumping the road signals, among other reasons.
