NASHVILLE -- Few people understand the history of the Tennessee Titans - Houston Oilers franchise than former coach Jeff Fisher. The club drafted quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2025, who came in with stylistic comparisons to legendary passer Steve McNair.

I asked Fisher what he made of those comparisons in an appearance on 104.5 The Zone's The Buck Reising Show recently.
Cam Ward has similar on-field characteristics to former NFL Co-MVP Steve McNair

Who better to ask about the player comp being made by many in the pre-draft process.
'What we did in the way we handled Steve was, we wanted to get him experienced in his first year," said Fisher. "Mind you, that's, well, come in and play if we're trailing by a lot and we'll mop up or if we're ahead or there's an injury. And so, he got valuable experience his first year. And then, we kind of moved into the second year. By the third year, people were asking me, how was he? I was like, well, I just watched. This guy's going to be pretty good.

"And even in year three, four and five, when he was really starting to come on the scene and winning games for us, people would ask, is he a top five quarterback? And at that point, I couldn't ask that question, but I certainly could say he's a top five football player. And that's what he was. He was a football player first. And then, as he moved in and really fine-tuned the quarterback position, then of course he's a co-MVP. But are there similarities between the two? Physically, I don't think you're gonna ever find anybody that matches Steve's physical characteristics, the toughness, the strength.'
Ward and McNair are both highly regarded for their competitive toughness, though the latter had higher-level traits at the position.
McNair, however, was a product of a different generation of quarterback development. He did not take the reigns as the full-time starter until his third year as a pro. Ward will not have that same luxury as the clear option for a franchise in desperate need of immediate impact.
While current Titans coach Brian Callahan has been firm on the idea of letting Ward earn the role through competition with embattled third-year quarterback Will Levis, Ward is the only real option moving forward.

Where Ward and McNair differ most

Comparisons are never exact.
Just as no two people in everyday life are created exactly equal, the same logic applies to athletes. While watching one prospect may remind you of a former great from years past, it is a fools errand to take those equivalencies to extremes. Fisher was keen to point out one area where the legendary McNair differs from the outspoken Ward.
"(McNair) was quiet," Fisher said. "He wasn't really outspoken. He wasn't that guy that would step in and call a team meeting or grab the team in the locker room, stuff like that. He was more of that quiet leader and people really respected. So, you know, when, when sometimes guys are going to yell and they're going to, you know, they're going to, you know, talk, talk trash and things like that. Steve spoke, spoke softly.

"And when he spoke, people bent over and listened to what he had to say.'

Patriots Week 7 opponent loses QB for 2025

The New England Patriots' Week 7 matchup with the Tennessee Titans will have a new look, with a major change under center for Tennessee. Quarterback Will Levis is set to undergo season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder—a lingering injury originally sustained in a game against the Miami Dolphins back on October 13 of last year. Though Levis returned to action less than a month later after missing three games, the injury never fully healed. Now, after further consultation with doctors and his representatives, Levis has opted for surgery, which will take place Tuesday, July 29. As a result, he won't be present when the Titans report to Saint Thomas Sports Park for the start of training camp. The Titans confirmed the news in a statement posted to X: 'After consulting with doctors and his representatives, Will Levis has decided to undergo shoulder surgery that will sideline him for the entire 2025 season. We support his decision to focus on his long-term health. He approached the offseason with professionalism and showed clear growth as a leader. We remain confident in his full recovery.' With Levis out, the Titans will turn to rookie Cam Ward, the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Ward took the majority of first-team reps during the offseason and is expected to be the starter heading into training camp, with veteran Brandon Allen likely backing him up. Even if Levis had been healthy, Ward may have still earned the job—Levis wasn't a lock to start, and there was a strong possibility Ward could have claimed the role in camp or by the time Tennessee faced New England in Week 7. Levis, selected by Tennessee in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, appeared in 21 games over his first two seasons. He completed 339 of 556 passes for 3,899 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, with a career passer rating of 82.7. In 2024, he threw for 2,091 yards with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, finishing with a QBR of 27.8 and a 2–10 record as a starter. Read the original article on MassLive.

Tennessee Titans signing DE/OLB Jihad Ward as edge help

The Tennessee Titans are signing veteran outside linebacker help in the form of Jihad Ward, a source confirmed to The Tennessean on July 23. Ward, a nine-year NFL veteran, has spent time with six franchises. He played in all 17 games for Minnesota in 2024, logging one sack and two starts. Across his career, he has totaled 19 sacks, including a career-high five with the New York Giants in 2023. The Ward signing comes less than a week after the Titans had to respond to the surprise retirement of edge defender Lorenzo Carter, who the team had signed in the spring. Carter was not on the field for the start of training camp and has officially landed on the retirement list. Ward, 6-foot-5 and 285 pounds, is another big-bodied newcomer in a Titans edge rush room that includes Dre'Mont Jones, Arden Key, Jaylen Harrell, Ali Gaye and rookie Femi Oladejo. Ward was a second-round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2016, where he was selected by then-Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie, now an adviser with the Titans. The Titans began training camp practices on July 23. Nick Suss is the Titans beat writer for The Tennessean. Contact Nick at nsuss@ Follow Nick on X @nicksuss.
