Fans rage as one of TV's most iconic ever episodes is 'ruined' by big change

Metro30-06-2025
Soap opera fans have united in fury over a huge change to one of the genre's most iconic episodes.
We are, of course, referring to Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell's Neighbours wedding, which aired on Australian television in 1987.
The event awarded Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue household name status, with their on-screen (and later off-screen) romance already capturing the hearts of teenagers around the globe.
When it aired on BBC One sixteen months later, a whopping 19.6 million viewers tuned in to see them walk down the aisle.
Packed-full of soapy drama and comedic moments, the episode's secondary plot sees Scott's older brother Paul (Stefan Dennis) continue with his sham marriage to Gail (Fiona Corke).
It also introduced their iconic cousin Hilary (Anne Scott-Pendlebury), and saw Ramsay Street harridan Mrs Mangel (Vivean Gray) catch Charlene's bouquet.
The icing on the (wedding) cake was a very 80s sounding ballad – Suddenly – which was written and performed by Melbourne artist Angry Anderson. It played out in its entirety during the church scenes, before being belted out again as the happy couple headed off on their honeymoon.
Released as 'The Wedding Theme from Neighbours', it reached No. 3 in the UK Singles Chart in 1988.
But now, 38 years on from it defining an era of the serial drama, the song has seemingly been erased from existence. Well, at least in Erinsborough it has.
Last week we reported that production company Fremantle Media have began uploading archive episodes of the show from the very beginning to YouTube.
At the time of writing you can watch up to episode 540, with those who have streamed the wedding episode noticing that AI technology has stripped out all traces of Suddenly, and replaced it with a generic, copyright-free track.
And quite frankly, it doesn't cut the mustard.
'Scott and Charlene's wedding has been uploaded to the old episode Neighbours channel and the music butchering is even worse than you can imagine' said one fan on X.
'Suddenly has been removed – except for the odd second where they couldn't. Mad how this was signed off for uploading.'
Another said that they'd worked out a solution: 'I put that scene on mute and played suddenly on my Spotify,' they said.
'I could handle the whole non copyrighted music but not for that scene.'
In the YouTube comments, the angry continued.
'Pretty much the most iconic scene in soap opera history destroyed by replaced music. Original music needs to be reinstated urgently!!' said one viewer.
'Replacing SUDDENLY completely destroys the episode. The pivotal scenes arguably of the entire series were edited to the specific song so now the emotion has been removed, figure it out somehow otherwise it's a huge flop watching it like this…' said another.

A third added: 'This goes to prove how important the music was to the success of Neighbours. Without it, so much of the emotion and drama is lost.'
In 2014, the happy couple's son Daniel (Tim Phillipps) joined the show, and was heard listening to Suddenly upon his arrival. Bizarrely, this hasn't been cut. More Trending
Neighbours will come to an end for the third time in December, having celebrated its 40th anniversary in March – and executive producer Jason Herbison has ruled out a return for Kylie and Jason.
'I haven't picked up the phone to [them, or] Guy [Pierce] again' he told Back to the Bay, referencing the last time the show was axed in 2022.
'I've left them alone, but it will be very similar in tone. I think it's a very warm, hopeful tone, but it's also a little bit different. There are things about it that I think might remind people of the previous finale, but it's also very different.'

Inside Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty's split as shock details of how TV power couple's relationship broke down revealed

CLOSE friends of Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty say their marriage was effectively over six months ago after drifting apart for an unexpected reason. Since marrying in 2012 they'd both successfully juggled their busy careers with their equally hectic family lives as parents to two young children. 9 Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty's marriage was effectively over six months ago, according to their friends Credit: Getty 9 Cat and Patrick met on the set of BBC One talent show Fame Academy in 2002 Credit: BBC 9 Things in their relationship seemed to change when they moved back from the US Credit: Getty But all that seemed to change after they permanently moved back from the US, where Cat had a huge presenting career, to the UK. And for the past two years Patrick, 54, has spent much of his time in Dublin where he hosts The Late Late Show while Cat, 48, has been in London fronting This Morning since March, 2024. They made an official announcement and the couple, who have two young children together, stressed that there was no third party involved. Last night a source close to the couple said: 'Everyone knew the marriage was over in March. They were living separate lives and it was very clear when she didn't go to his mother's funeral that month. 'She'd been living in England to work on This Morning and he was back in Ireland - they only spent time together for the kids. No major signs 'It's a huge shock as everyone saw them as one of the most normal and down to earth couples in showbusiness and there were no major signs that anything was seriously wrong for some time.' They have two children Milo, nine, and James, seven, and have a family home in North London since Cat and Patrick moved back to the UK five years ago. She had been enjoying a successful presenting career in Los Angeles for almost 14 years. They said in a joint statement to the PA news agency: 'We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved. 'We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. This Morning's Cat Deeley reveals her REAL name as she's reunited with her old teacher live on air 'There will be no further comment.' Leaving America saw them swap a £3.75 million pad in Beverly Hills for a £4.9 million five-bedroom house in Hampstead. Patrick, who comes from Co down in Northern Ireland and started his career as a stand-up comedian, began hosting The Late Late Show in Dublin from September 2023 in Dublin. He also made his first feature film and two TV documentaries, all based in Ireland and Northern Ireland. CAT'S CAREER 1997: Cat gets her TV break presenting MTV's chart show Hitlist UK alongside Edith Bowman. 1998 — 2005: She hits the big time with sketch comedy series SM:TV Live and music show CD:UK with Ant & Dec on ITV. 2002 — 2003: Cat starts co-hosting two series of Fame Academy on BBC One with Patrick Kielty. 2006: She bags job fronting long-running US reality show So You Think You Can Dance. 2024: Starts co-hosting ITV's This Morning with Ben Shephard. Cat started hosting This Morning from March last year, a job which would see her spend four days a week fronting the flagship daytime TV show with co-host Ben Shephard, 50. But they returned five years ago with Cat saying in an interview: 'We had always thought: 'Our boys have grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins they adore, and they adore them right back'. 'It's such a special moment in time and you don't get those times back.' 9 For the past two years, Patrick has spent much of his time in Dublin where he hosts The Late Late Show Credit: Free for editorial use 9 Since marrying in 2012 Patrick and Cat both successfully juggled their busy careers Credit: Getty 9 Cat started hosting This Morning from March last year with co-host Ben Shephard Credit: Rex But Cat was under huge scrutiny last year when she took over hosting This Morning following the departure of Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield the previous year. West Bromwich-born Cat, who shot to fame on Saturday morning TV show SM:TV in the late Nineties with pals Ant & Dec, moved to the US in 2006 to forge a new career hosting So You Think you Can Dance? It was the same year that she divorced her first husband Mark Whelan after five years of marriage. Cat and Patrick had met on the set of BBC One talent show Fame Academy in 2002 but it would be almost another decade before their friendship turned into a romance. In an incredible gesture he rang her on her birthday from Ireland, then hopped on a plane to meet her in the US and celebrate her special day together. I drop the ball all the time. I'm exactly the same as everybody else. Cat Deeley They went public with their relationship in 2011 and wed in Rome the following year and the family resided in Los Angeles to be close to her work. The move back to the UK was partly down to the family being caught up in a shooter incident in a local mall. In an interview she recalled how Patrick called her from a Shake Shack restaurant after he hadn't returned from playgroup with their son, Milo. The TV presenter revealed that her son and her husband had been out for burgers when they were forced to lie behind the counter after a shooter scare. 9 The couple balanced hectic family lives as parents to two young children Credit: Splash 9 Cat was under huge scrutiny last year when she took over hosting This Morning Credit: Getty 9 It was almost a decade after meeting that Patrick and Cat's friendship turned into a romance Credit: Getty Cat said: 'As I was driving I began to see helicopters, news vans, firemen and Swat squads. 'Everyone was either told to lie behind the counter or pushed into the loos. People were screaming and crying. Then as they were all hiding, the FBI turned up with guns. 'Paddy kept Milo calm – he didn't really know what was going on – and in the end it just turned out to be a suspect package but… Milo [was] three years old. "Something like that has happened to him. The gun laws in America are crazy.' She admitted the incident made her reconsider staying in the US. Talking about trying to juggle her work life with family life last year she said: 'I drop the ball all the time. I'm exactly the same as everybody else. 'I do the juggle – the juggle is real, the struggle is real. You know, we know, we're all just trying to make everything work.'

Huge girlband star splits from secret boyfriend after moving to Canada for him & says ‘I don't know how to date'

SUGABABES star Keisha Buchanan has admitted she "doesn't know how to date" after secretly splitting from a new romance. The iconic 00s singer, 40, is diving back into the dating scene after an allegedly abusive, 10-year relationship with ex-boyfriend Taiwo Leo Atieno. 6 6 6 6 But in a new vlog on her YouTube channel titled " Life Update - I missed you!" Keisha opened up about secret romances in her life, including one suitor she fell for so much she moved to Canada to be with him. Now she's looking onwards and upwards and is hopeful for what lies ahead for her after embracing single life. Talking to the camera, Keisha admitted she was "low key embarrassed" talking about her personal life, but wanted to open up. As part of the long chat, she said: "I went through a breakup, and we actually were living together in Canada. So my ex boyfriend is Canadian, and it didn't work out, and that's very difficult to kind of navigate." The revelation comes as Keisha opened up about all aspects of her dating life and former romances, touching on difficult relationships that "could destroy someone". Although she didn't mention the ex by name, Keisha said she wanted to be more |open and vulnerable" with fans as she is with those in her life, but noted: "I haven't had the best response with those, [or the] best experiences when I've been that way. "Unfortunately, my vulnerability and my open heart has led to, you know, maybe opening doors to people and things that could definitely destroy a person, or try to at least. "But I'm making decisions today that will allow me to enjoy things way more." Keisha revealed that she is someone who is often in long-term relationships – joking: "I've been single now for, like, I want to say, like, a good part of a year and a half. "This feels so weird because I don't know how to date. So this is the phase that I'm in now." She then revealed: "I can only put my heart and my energy in one place. "So if dating means dating loads of people and speaking to loads of people, I need to be taught how to do that." As Keisha embraces single life and continues to tour to sold out arenas with Sugababes, former footballer Atieno is preparing to face court for a string of charges waged against him regarding her. Atieno has been charged with controlling and coercive behaviour between December 2015 and May 2018 and assault occasioning actual bodily harm between January 2012 and January 2015. He is also accused of harassment between January 2021 and December last year and an alleged breach of a non-molestation order. It's alleged during the height of their romance, Atieno would control what Keisha ate, what lipstick she couldn't wear, and what she could watch on TV. He is set to enter his plea at Southwark Crown Court on August 22, with a five-day trial set for April 13 next year. 6 6

My boyfriend makes spicy content with other men but that doesn't make him gay – I'm not bothered, it's just work

A WOMAN has claimed her boyfriend who sleeps with men on camera isn't gay but is just doing it for the money. Terri and Ryan, from Cheshire, opened up about their unusual situation in a YouTube episode of Love Don't Judge. 2 The pair started out making X-rated content together, but now 'ex-con' Ryan stars in the scenes with other men, with Terri acting as director, camerawoman, and creative partner. They claim to have found the winning formula in the world of adult entertainment and say they are raking in between £2,000 to £6,000 each month. While some people would feel uncomfortable watching their partner having sex with other people, Terri insists it doesn't bother her. She also stresses that their videos don't mean Ryan is gay as it is 'just work.' Terri added: 'I don't feel any certain way about it – it's just work for both of us. 'I do women content myself so I can understand what he is doing. Most of the time we work with people we know anyway.' Ryan states that he's only doing it for 'gay for pay' and he earns more cash than if he was sleeping with women. In fact, since he switched up to working with men, his subscribers have grown by over 1,000 people in eight months. He shared: 'I'm a straight male making spicy content with men and that's my niche, some people like it and some people don't, that's fine they don't have to buy it. 'I'm not homophobic and I'm not taking advantage of anyone.' First Dates hosts its very first throuple in new series Terri added: 'When he was in prison, I was making content with other people in the industry and when I was talking to the lads about it they were saying they don't make much money from working with women. 'It's all from working with men, their audience is the LGBT community, mostly their fans are not straight so they don't like straight content.' Despite raking in the cash, they admit that some of their mates have been left scratching their heads at their arrangement. Ruan shared: 'Friends wise, the ones I'm still mates with don't want to hear about it, they are not interested. 'Every now and again someone will say 'I've seen you on TikTok', and I throw it back at them, 'why are you watching me?'.' He claims his family are 'alright' about his job, and said he says he is 'modelling' if anyone asks. In the YouTube episode, Terri's mum raises her own concerns, and asks her daughter if she is scared Ryan will leave her for a man. Terri replies saying their relationship is rock solid, no matter what people think. Ryan responded: 'I think everyone gets a form of jealousy, but obviously we don't do it for fun, it's for work. 'We maintain boundaries in our relationship by sticking to professional people.'
