Notre Dame baseball loses its best player, catcher Carson Tinney, to the transfer portal

Notre Dame baseball loses its best player, catcher Carson Tinney, to the transfer portal It was a breakout year for Notre Dame baseball catcher Carson Tinney, as the sophomore is up for multiple national awards. Unfortunately he has made a decision that will make a major impact on the Irish, as Matt Freeman reports that he is going to enter the transfer portal. This is a huge blow to head coach Shawn Stiffler's rebuilding process, as Notre Dame looked like they had turned a corner late this year and it was going to bring a lot of momentum into the 2026 season. Tinney was absolutely dominant this spring, hitting .348 with 17 home runs, 53 RBI while slugging .753. He was the offensive leader for the Irish in all of those categories, along with some excellent play from behind the dish. Notre Dame still had rising juniors in Troy Reader and Davis Johnson along with rising sophomore Trent Hartman on the roster, but Tinney was clearly the best option for Stiffler. This isn't what any Notre Dame baseball fan wanted to see, but after narrowly missing out on the NCAA Tournament, it seems like Tinney wanted to play somewhere where he could make the postseason. Best of luck to Carson, but it's a sad day in South Bend.
