Notre Dame baseball loses its best player, catcher Carson Tinney, to the transfer portal
It was a breakout year for Notre Dame baseball catcher Carson Tinney, as the sophomore is up for multiple national awards.
Unfortunately he has made a decision that will make a major impact on the Irish, as Matt Freeman reports that he is going to enter the transfer portal. This is a huge blow to head coach Shawn Stiffler's rebuilding process, as Notre Dame looked like they had turned a corner late this year and it was going to bring a lot of momentum into the 2026 season.
Tinney was absolutely dominant this spring, hitting .348 with 17 home runs, 53 RBI while slugging .753. He was the offensive leader for the Irish in all of those categories, along with some excellent play from behind the dish. Notre Dame still had rising juniors in Troy Reader and Davis Johnson along with rising sophomore Trent Hartman on the roster, but Tinney was clearly the best option for Stiffler.
This isn't what any Notre Dame baseball fan wanted to see, but after narrowly missing out on the NCAA Tournament, it seems like Tinney wanted to play somewhere where he could make the postseason. Best of luck to Carson, but it's a sad day in South Bend.

Lindy's College Football preview magazine ranks Notre Dame football inside its top-10

Notre Dame will be favored in every one of its games this upcoming football season according to DraftKings Sportsbook, but one publication does not have the Fighting Irish in its College Football Playoff projections. Following a season in which the Irish set a program record for wins on their way to the national championship game, Lindy's Sports released its preseason college football preview magazine and ranked the Irish No. 6 nationally. Certainly a solid ranking, and the same spot Athlon Sports slotted the Irish in its preseason magazine, but Lindy's has Ohio State, LSU, Oregon, Alabama, Georgia, Miami and SMU earning at-large CFP bids and not Notre Dame. Advertisement From the magazine: "We'll know early if Notre Dame's playoff expectation is warranted when the Irish play Miami, Texas A&M and Arkansas in the first four weeks. With only six players drafted, Notre Dame returns the wealth of a squad that was a few plays away from winning it all." - Lindy's Sports The Notre Dame defensive line and linebacker corps failed to make the Top 10 in Lindy's unit rankings, which is quite debatable. The magazine is also concerned about the quarterback situation, where either redshirt freshman CJ Carr or redshirt sophomore Kenny Minchey will be taking the first snap in the season opener at Miami Labor Day weekend. Despite the playoff snub from Lindy's, though, it's clear that national college football observers are bullish on the Irish to remain a national contender in 2025 and beyond. Pro Football Focus lauds Notre Dame's linebacker unit

Is Notre Dame suddenly becoming Linebacker U? Pro Football Focus is very high on the 2025 group, ranking the Fighting Irish 'backers as the fifth-best unit in the nation ahead of the new season. Despite losing veteran Jack Kiser, junior Drayk Bowen is back. Per PFF's wins above average metric, no returning FBS linebacker was more valuable than him last year. The Indiana native finished with 78 tackles and three forced fumbles in 2024. He should be one of the nation's best Mike 'backers this fall. Also back is Jaylen Sneed, a redshirt junior who had six tackles for loss and earned a 70.8 grade on 433 snaps in 2024. Advertisement Jaiden Ausberry played over 400 snaps, earning a 69.6 run-defense grade, and had 6.5 tackles for loss. And there are high expectations for true sophomore Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, who earned a 67.6 PFF grade on 343 snaps as a freshman after being the No. 4 linebacker in the 2024 high school class. He earned Freshman All-America honors after registering 37 tackles (2.5 tackles for loss). He will likely back up Bowen or compete for the starting Will spot. Certainly there is a lot to like when it comes to the linebacker corps in South Bend. Kyle Johnson drives in 5 in Duke's 7-4 win over Murray State; Blue Devils seek first CWS since 1961

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Kyle Johnson drove in five runs to power Duke's 7-4 victory over Murray State on Saturday in the first game of the Durham Super Regional. The Blue Devils are one win from reaching the College World Series for the first time since 1961. Game 2 is Sunday. Advertisement Johnson, a .228 hitter in 57 at-bats coming in, had two doubles and a home run among his four hits and scored twice. Trailing 2-0 in the third inning, Duke tied it when Jake Berger drew a leadoff walk and scored on Johnson's two-run home run to center field. Johnson and Berger figured in the Blue Devils' three-run fourth inning. Johnson drove in two with a bases-loaded double that sent Berger to third base. Berger then scored on a wild pitch by Nic Schutte (8-4). In the sixth, Johnson doubled to drive in one run and later scored on a double by Ben Rounds. Duke managed only six hits — four by Johnson — but the Blue Devils benefited from eight walks. Advertisement Dom Decker had four of Murray State's nine hits and drove in two runs. Duke starter Owen Proksch (4-3) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Reid Easterly pitched three scoreless innings for his fifth save. Duke (42-19) is playing in the super regionals for the fourth time. The Racers (42-15) are making their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance and first in the super regionals. ___ AP college sports:
