Netflix's latest series, "Bet", has become a binge-worthy obsession of viewers, including me.
This gripping adaptation of the Japanese manga, "Kakegurui - Compulsive Gambler", offers not just high-stakes gambling but a thrilling narrative steeped in dark revenge and moral dilemmas.
"Bet" follows Yumeko (Miku Martineau), a transfer student at an elite boarding school.
The students are children of leaders who run the world, underground and otherwise. They are taught how to be as ruthless as their parents are in hopes of one day ruling the world too.
But here's the twist: At St. Dominic's Prep, underground gambling dictates their social order. The Top 10 best gamblers are part of the school's student council. Yumeko needs to be here.
Yumeko, a skilled gambler herself, challenges the established hierarchy and the school's power structure - she intends to bring the school to its knees.
But let's backtrack a bit. Yumeko's parents attended St. Dominic's Prep.
They were murdered when she was just a little girl. She watched as they waved goodbye to her before jumping into their car, which was engulfed in flames.
Now a young adult, the flames of revenge ignite within her core.
She wants to know who ordered the hit on her parents and will go to any extent to avenge their deaths. In one episode, she constructs a bomb in her dorm room, places it under the seat of the man she thinks is responsible for her parents' deaths.
Luckily for him, the bomb was defective. Later, she finds out he isn't the killer.
Yumeko can't do this alone, so she's got a few sidekicks, Ryan, Mary and Michael, who later turns on her after finding out that his mafia father could be the killer.
After several high-stakes bets, Yumeko finally makes the Top 10, and now the real game begins.
Yumeko is faced with difficult truths about who killed her parents, as for how she handles it ... Well, I won't spoil it.
What I will say is that "Bet" expertly intertwines elements of suspense, strategy, and personal drama, leaving viewers addicted and begging for another season.

EXCLUSIVE: Teyana Taylor and Sherri Shepherd dish on sisterhood and social struggles in Tyler Perry's 'Straw'

Teyana Taylor as Officer Kay Raymond in 'Straw'. Image: Chip Bergmann/Perry Well Films 2/Courtesy Netflix ©2025 Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of virtually interviewing Teyana Taylor and Sherri Shepherd, who are part of the principal cast of Tyler Perry's thriller, 'Straw'. Now these phenomenal women are legends in the industry - and not just for acting. Taylor is a respected singer, songwriter, model, dancer, choreographer and music video director, while Shepherd is also a daytime talk show host as well as podcaster and comedian. Engaging with them, even briefly, was mind-blowing. Especially with it being about a project that undeniably carries Perry's signature ability to portray poignant stories of socioeconomic hardship. He's proven his Midas touch in his popular "Madea" franchise and 'Good Deeds'. 'Straw' dropped on Netflix yesterday. It centres on Janiyah Wiltkinson (Taraji P. Henson), a single mother with a sick little girl, who is having the worst day. Her landlord is threatening to throw her out if she doesn't pay her overdue rent. Her manager at the local grocery store where she works as a cashier fired her for taking longer than she promised, as she had to rush to her daughter's school while on duty. Amid trying to get back to work, a cop hits her car and blames her for it while also threatening to kill her. As she pleads for her salary, so she can pay her rent and give her child $40 for school lunch, two thugs arrive to rob the store. What follows is a series of unfortunate events and misunderstandings that lead to her being wanted for murder. She doesn't help her situation when she holds a teller at gunpoint to cash her cheque - a situation which mushrooms into a tense standoff with law enforcement. Sherri Shepherd as Nicole in 'Straw'. Image: Chip Bergmann/Perry Well Films 2/Courtesy Netflix ©2025 On the actresses' thoughts on the strong social aspect of the script and their respective roles, Shepherd, who plays Nicole, the kind-hearted bank manager, said: 'You know, when I read the script, the part that I loved is that it had a social aspect to it, because I think that's what people are going to connect to. 'Taraji's character, Janiyah, couldn't catch a break. She played by the rules, and they weaponised those rules against her. And I think that people have had those days, or you know somebody who's been through that. 'And because of that, hopefully, the person (watching) will leave with a lot more empathy and compassion than when they started.' Taylor, who is cast as Detective Kay Raymond, agreed wholeheartedly with Shepherd's sentiments. Interestingly, this isn't the first time Taylor is working with Perry. 'Actually, my first movie ever was with Tyler Perry, so being able to work with him on his project was really like a family reunion, and we had a blast. 'You know, being able to be directed by him is always amazing, and he created such an amazing and safe space, putting me in a position to have the opportunity to get to work with Sherry and Taraji has been amazing. 'I'm just so happy to be a part of it,' she shared. Taraji P. Henson as Janiyah Wiltkinson in 'Straw'. Image: Chip Bergmann/Perry Well Films 2/Courtesy Netflix ©2025

Britt Eady's shocking decision leaves RHOA fans questioning Kenya Moore's future

Real Housewives of Atlanta newcomer, Brit Eady, announced that she will not be attending the reunion after falling out with Kenya Moore. Image: Instagram The power play within the Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA) has intensified as fans rally for the reinstatement of Kenya Moore, following dramatic revelations from newcomer Brit Eady. The tension escalated during the filming of Season 16's reunion when Eady controversially opted out of participation, citing the emotional toll caused by this season's controversies. Central to this turbulence is the fallout surrounding graphic photos purportedly linked to Moore, leading to her indefinite suspension from the show. This latest twist comes as Eady shared her decision on Instagram, explicitly stating, 'This was my decision', while confirming her absence from the reunion. Next Stay Close ✕ The weight of the season's events has profoundly impacted her. 'While I cannot say much right now, I do want to set the record straight about one thing: the graphic sexual photo surrounding the events in Episode 5. That photo was not me,' she asserted, creating a ripple of confusion and concern among fans and cast alike. Eady clarified that she had only recently seen the controversial image and expressed her shock upon realising it did not feature her. 'I was made aware of the photo being presented at the event, and based on what I was told, I assumed that it was somehow a photo of me - which is why I reacted in the way that I did,' she explained. This revelation not only sheds new light on her dramatic reaction but also inadvertently shifts some focus back to Moore, whose departure from the series has left a significant void. I'm disappointed to not be a part of the #RHOA 16 reunion taping today. Please know I take full accountability for my actions and deeply apologize to all those affected including Brittney, the cast, crew, guests and viewers. I look forward to seeing you all back on Bravo soon. — KENYA MOORE (@KenyaMoore) June 5, 2025
