PayPal is killing Google Wallet integration for users in the US

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
TL;DR Google Wallet is ending its PayPal account integration for U.S. users, meaning they will soon lose the ability to use linked PayPal for payments.
This change takes effect on June 13, 2025, and Google already stopped new PayPal linking for U.S. users in April.
The discontinuation will not affect Google Wallet users in Germany or those in the U.S. who directly added a PayPal-branded Debit Mastercard.
While Google struggled with branding its digital wallet service initially, it has since developed Google Wallet into a compelling and widely adopted product. Available in numerous countries, it supports hundreds of banks and pass providers. For years, Google Wallet has offered the convenience of linking PayPal accounts, saving users from adding payment methods to both services. However, this integration is soon ending, at least for users in the U.S.
On a support page, Google confirms it will soon automatically delete linked PayPal accounts for Google Wallet users in the U.S. Following this, U.S. users cannot relink their PayPal accounts, as Google already halted new signups in April. This means users will no longer be able to access payment methods within their PayPal account for purchases made via Google Wallet.
This change takes effect on June 13, 2025, giving affected U.S. users less than two weeks to continue using their linked PayPal accounts for payments. Google advises impacted users to update their payment methods for any recurring payments before this shutdown. However, this change will not affect Google Wallet users who directly added their PayPal-branded Debit Mastercard instead of linking their PayPal account.
Furthermore, this change will not affect Google Wallet users in Germany, where PayPal will continue to support the integration. The support page offers no explanation for why the integration is ending specifically in the U.S. Notably, PayPal recently updated its Android and iOS apps to enable contactless payments for German users. This timing raises the possibility that PayPal is discontinuing its Google Wallet integration in the U.S. ahead of a similar contactless payment feature launch there, though this remains unconfirmed. Why the integration would then be maintained in Germany, the first country to receive PayPal's new feature, is also an open question.
U.S. users who have enjoyed the convenience of using their PayPal accounts through Google Wallet will undoubtedly be disappointed by this news. Fortunately, Google Wallet's support for banks and merchants has significantly expanded since the PayPal integration was first announced years ago. Affected users should check if their preferred payment methods are now directly supported by the service.

This app lets Mac users take full advantage of Android's Quick Share with new QR code support

Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority TL;DR NearDrop allows users to send files from their Android device to their Mac. A new update adds support for sending files using QR codes. This update now allows you to send files from your computer to your Android device. It would be nice if Google created a Quick Share app for macOS that allowed you to share files quickly between your Android phone and your Mac. The NearDrop app can help fill that gap, but it's not a perfect solution. However, a new update brings the app closer to its full potential. If you're unfamiliar with NearDrop, it's an unofficial macOS app that uses a partial implementation of Quick Share. Like Quick Share, it allows you to send files wirelessly from one device to another. When we last covered NearDrop, you could only send files from your Android device to your Mac, not the other way around. However, the app has since received an update. According to the app's GitHub page, an update has rolled out that adds support for sending files using QR codes. This update also makes it possible for users to send files from their macOS device to their Android phone. The developer behind the app has shared a GIF of the new capability in action. In addition to QR code support, the developer has also expanded available languages. According to the changelog, NearDrop now supports Romanian translation. Follow

Bed Bath & Beyond rises from the dead — and yes, they'll take your coupons

In the early 2000s, it was hard to pass through any major suburban center and not cross a Bed Bath & Beyond. The home retail stores were ubiquitous back then and so popular that one of the brand's locations featured as a major plot point in the 2006 Adam Sandler comedy Click, which grossed nearly a quarter billion dollars worldwide. But in the nearly two decades since then, Bed Bath & Beyond suffered the same challenges many major retailers have experienced: declining foot traffic, a shift in consumer shopping habits from physical to online stores, and rising costs due to inflation. The once ubiquitous chain ended up going bankrupt in 2023 and subsequently closed all its stores. Now, however, one of those stores is back from the beyond—and it's even accepting old Bed Bath & Beyond coupons. Here's what you need to know. BBB is back from the beyond Shortly after Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy in 2023, online shopping giant acquired the former retailer's name and rebranded itself as Bed Bath & Beyond. And now, Overstock's owner, The Brand House Collective, Inc., has announced it will open its first physical Bed Bath & Beyond store again. However, fans of the brick-and-mortar retailer shouldn't get their hopes up for a nationwide revival. As of now, The Brand House Collective has only announced plans to open one Bed Bath & Beyond. One. The company also announced that the store would feature a slight name change. Instead of being known as 'Bed Bath & Beyond,' the new store will be called 'Bed Bath & Beyond Home,' likely to hammer home the point that the store is a home goods outlet. Announcing the new store opening, Amy Sullivan, CEO of The Brand House Collective, said, 'We're proud to reintroduce one of retail's most iconic names with the launch of Bed Bath & Beyond Home, beautifully reimagined for how families gather at home today.' She continued, 'This isn't just a store, it's a fresh start for a brand that means something special to so many families. With Bed Bath & Beyond Home we're delivering on our mission to offer great brands, for any budget, in every room.' Get your (old) coupons ready The Brand House Collective has also chosen to implement a unique marketing gimmick for Bed Bath & Beyond's physical revival: the new store will accept old Bed Bath & Beyond coupons. One of the big draws of former Bed Bath & Beyond stores was that they often offered customer coupons that could lead to significant deals and discounts. For the grand opening of the new store, customers with those old coupons will be able to use them again. 'We encourage guests to bring in their legacy Bed Bath & Beyond coupons which we will gladly honor,' the company said in its press release. It also confirmed the new store will issue new coupons to guests as well. Where and when does the new Bed Bath & Beyond open? The new Bed Bath & Beyond location opens today, Friday, August 8, 2025 in Nashville, Tennessee. As for The Brand House Collective, it's unlikely the opening of the new physical store will do much for its bottom line. The company's stock (Nasdaq: TBHC) is currently trading down 3.1% as of the time of this writing to $1.21 per share.

Microsoft rolls out OpenAI's GPT-5 — and Elon Musk rolls out the commentary

Microsoft Image The release of GPT-5 on Thursday was a chance for Microsoft to remind the world about its exclusive cloud API partnership with OpenAI — and Elon Musk helped, in a roundabout way. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella posted that GPT-5 was launching across Microsoft platforms including Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and Azure AI Foundry. 'OpenAI is going to eat Microsoft alive,' Musk responded. Nadella took it in stride, and subtly reminded Musk that he's a Microsoft partner, as well, albeit on a much smaller scale, after the two tech leaders announced in May that Microsoft would begin hosting Grok models from Musk's xAI on Azure. 'People have been trying for 50 years and that's the fun of it! Each day you learn something new, and innovate, partner, and compete,' Nadella responded. 'Excited for Grok 4 on Azure and looking forward to Grok 5!' The GPT-5 release comes at a timely moment for Microsoft, two days after Amazon was able to trumpet the fact that its AWS cloud will be hosting two OpenAI models for the first time, the open-weight gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, thanks to their release under the Apache 2.0 license. All of it comes as Microsoft and OpenAI reportedly renegotiate their partnership and equity terms, a reminder that Redmond's most important AI alliance is still evolving. As for Microsoft's relationship with Musk, it's complicated in a different way. Musk last year added Microsoft as a defendant to his lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that the companies formed a de facto AI monopoly. On CNBC's Squawk Box, co-host Andrew Ross Sorkin asked OpenAI CEO Sam Altman about the Nadella-Musk exchange: 'What do you think when you read that?' 'You know,' Altman said, 'I don't think about him that much.'
