John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Son Gives Rare Details on His Childhood
Sean Ono Lennon is shedding light on his legendary family.
The son of and Yoko Ono, who were married from 1969 until the alum's death in 1980, described his parents as 'ahead of their time' for the way they documented their lives long before that became the norm.
'I think it's really interesting that John and Yoko famously recorded their lives all the time via video—I mean, via 16 millimeter film,' he told Variety in an interview published April 11. 'The fact that they were doing that in the early '70s, before reality television and before social media and before memes … As far as I am concerned, it's like they were the first reality TV celebrity couple.'
Sean, 49, explained that his father—who also shared son Julian Lennon, 62, with his first wife Cynthia Lennon—adopted the practice partly out of necessity, as the FBI began surveilling him in 1971 amid his anti-war activism.
'On one of the audio calls, you hear my dad saying, 'I'm recording all of these calls just so we have our own copy of this, so if anyone ever tries to say anything about what we are talking about, then we'll have our own version—so we'll know what the truth is,'' Sean continued. 'It's pretty wild to think that that was actually necessary to do, which I think it was probably a smart idea.'
And given that Sean was just 5 years old when his father was murdered, those tapes are all the more precious to him.

"Especially because I grew up without my dad around," he went on, "every recording of his voice and every video of him that people have seen, it's a limited resource."
Amid the release of the documentary One to One: John and Yoko, which features newly-unearthed phone calls recorded by his parents, Sean also noted that viewers may see his mother in a new light.
'People are really gonna get to hear my mom speak for herself in an undeniably candid context,' he added. 'I think it really shows what she suffered and what she went through, but also how smart she was, and how she was viewing the world at the time.'

Launching Friday on the Sephora app and Saturday on and the collaboration will include two new shades of Lawless' Forget The Filler Lip-Plumping Line-Smoothing Gloss: Blooming Heirloom and Happy Thoughts. The two lip products represent founder Annie Lawless Jacobs and LoveShackFancy's Rebecca Hessel Cohen. 'Lawless and LoveShackFancy both celebrate a romantic, unapologetically feminine point of view,' Jacobs told WWD. More from WWD Gen Z Is Searching for Dream Thrift Finds, Caffeine Clothing, Art Deco Revival and Salmon DNA Skin Care Estée Lauder's Sales Decline in Fourth Quarter, Tariffs to Impact Profitability by $100 Million Next Year Waldencast Delays Earnings Release, Initiates Strategic Review Following Novaestiq Acquisition 'Both Lawless and LoveShackFancy are rooted in a playful-yet-elevated aesthetic, and we both speak to the girl who wants to feel confident, glamorous and a little bit extra. The idea to create something together happened so organically — it just felt meant to be. We knew we had to make something magical.' Described as 'the perfect opalescent pink' by Cohen, Blooming Heirloom is designed to mimic Jacobs, shimmer and all. Meanwhile, Happy Thoughts, a pale lavender hue, was created with Cohen in mind. The flavor of Happy Thoughts boasts the same vanilla notes present in LoveShackFancy's latest fragrance creation and the cap is wrapped in the brand's heritage floral print. 'It's truly the perfect marriage — Lawless Beauty's bestselling gloss and our most-loved scents and prints. We paired their iconic Forget the Filler lip formula with our top-selling Sugar Blush Hair & Body Mist scent, plus two of our most romantic fragrance-inspired prints: Happy Thoughts for Endless Dreams and Blooming Heirloom for Forever in Love,' Cohen said. 'It's a full-sensory LoveShack moment — dreamy, flirty and feminine, with all the high-performance magic Lawless Beauty is known for. Every detail feels like our worlds colliding in the prettiest, most playful way.' The Forget the Filler lip gloss line — made up of 21 shades, from translucent white to deep burgundy — has become a cult-favorite within the TikTok beauty mecca, with its Maxi-Lip technology and shea butter formula that's clinically proven to increase volume by 40 percent, according the brand. The LoveShackFancy additions are made with the same ingredients. Jacobs recognized the significance of this collaboration, which marks the first time Lawless has partnered with a brand on a 'full-scale' collection. 'It's a milestone moment for us. Partnering with a brand like LoveShackFancy, one we truly love and admire, allowed us to explore a softer, more romantic side of Lawless while still staying true to our bold, full glam roots. And because this collection is limited edition, it truly feels like a moment in time — something special you'll want to grab before it's gone,' she said. According to Jacobs, industry experts predict the LoveShackFancy Forget the Filler glosses will garner more than $2 million in retail sales, making it 'the year's most successful holiday beauty collaborations.' She added: 'Given the limited-edition nature of the collaboration, it is expected to sell out quickly.' Like Lawless, LoveShackFancy — best known for its East Coast, pink and white aesthetic — has generated widespread buzz online in recent years, with popular New York City influencers posting creative advertisements for the ethereal clothing, vacationing at the brand's decorated cottage in the Hamptons and visiting Cohen's illustrious West Village townhouse. Cohen's home, specifically, was a hot topic on TikTok in July 2024 after she did a video tour, which garnered over 42.8 million views and 6.4 million likes on the app alone. Austin Butler 'almost cracked' a rib after headbutt from costar in fight scene
One of Austin Butler's latest fight scenes may have gotten a little too real. In a conversation with Men's Health, the Oscar-nominated "Elvis" star, 34, revealed he "almost cracked" his rib shooting a sequence in his new movie "Caught Stealing." The moment came during a scene where Butler's character is beaten up by two Russians, and he encouraged one of the actors, Nikita Kukushkin, not to hold back to ensure it looked authentic. "When he was kicking me, he didn't want to kick me very hard," Butler explained. "He felt bad. I kept telling him, 'Just kick me. Kick me harder.' I'd watch it back, and I was like, 'It doesn't look real.' So he starts really laying into me and kicking me hard." Butler's costar soon took the scene in a new direction. "He had this idea of headbutting me in the side, like a little ram or something," Butler said. "He did it so hard it almost cracked my rib with his head. I was very impressed." Austin Butler recalls trippy Bad Bunny concert after taking edible: 'My brain is in two movies' While the "Dune: Part Two" actor noted he had an "amazing" stunt double on the film, he said there were "little" moments, such as a scene where he's thrown onto a table, where "you can't use a stunt double" because it would be too obvious given the camera angle. "For the most part, I'd just say, 'Yeah, let's go,'" Butler told Men's Health. "I'll just deal with the bruises later." While Butler said he only "almost" cracked a rib in this instance, in 2024, the actor told Variety he actually did break a rib working on his Apple TV+ series "Masters of the Air." "There was a fight scene and yeah, my rib cracked," he told Variety at the time. "It hurt and then I had to keep fighting. And it hurts for a long time after because every time you breathe, you feel your ribs. But it could have been worse." 'Dune: Part 2' sadistic siblings Austin Butler and Dave Bautista loved hating each other Butler stars in "Caught Stealing" opposite Zoë Kravitz as a man who "finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters" after his neighbor, played by Matt Smith, asks him to take care of his cat, per the studio's synopsis. The Darren Aronofsky movie continues a busy few years for the former Nickelodeon star, who earned an Oscar nomination in 2023 for his performance as Elvis Presley in "Elvis." In 2022, Butler told British GQ that after he finished shooting the musical biopic, he was hospitalized and bedridden for a week with a virus. "I woke up at four in the morning with excruciating pain, and I was rushed to (the) hospital," he said, adding, "My body just started shutting down the day after I finished 'Elvis.'" In his interview with Men's Health, Butler also revealed he experienced temporary blindness and lost his vision for several minutes while on a plane on his way to shoot the film "The Bikeriders." He said he blamed the incident on sleep deprivation.
