'My four kids only watched 90s cartoons for a week – I couldn't believe huge impact'
As a parent, it can be difficult to limit your child from using their phone or tablet. The NHS recently listed the amount of screen time kids should have based on their age, but we all know it's always easier said than done, right?
Nowadays many parents could be judged for allowing their little ones to use their technology devices out in public, or even letting them sit in front of the telly for countless hours. Now one mum revealed how tuning into 90s cartoons for an entire week had a huge impact on her four children in many ways.
Mum-of-four Ariel Shearer boasts 88,100 followers on Instagram where she shares her parenting content. She's also the founder of Mom Taught Me, a trusted source for expert advice, practical life hacks and more.
In her latest post, she told fans how she completed a week where her kids only watched 90s TV shows – and the results? Well, they were promising according to Ariel. She said: "After a week of the kids watching only 90s TV shows, here's what I noticed...
"I have 4 under six and here's what I've noticed in each of them. They're less overstimulated, no fast cuts or loud sound effects grabbing their attention every second.
"They actually wander off to play rather than just sitting glued to the screen. There's less begging for 'one more episode' – it feels like the shows aren't designed to be addictive.
"They engage more with each other while these shows are on. No more meltdowns when screen time ends." Ariel then listed the shows she let her children watch, including Little Bear and the Bear in the Big Blue House.
She also tuned into Arthur, Rugrats, Franklin, The Magic School Bus, Blues Clues, Dora the Explorer, PB&J Otter and Rolie Polie Olie. Ariel's theory is also backed up in a study published by the National Institutes of Health.
This found the immediate impact of different types of TV on young children. It also claimed just 9 minutes of viewing a fast-paced television cartoon had huge negative effects on four-year-olds' executive function.
Since her Instagram video was shared, it racked up thousands of likes and comments. One said: "Both my kids grew up on many of these except Rugrats. We didn't like how bratty the kids acted.
"There was a show made shortly after Bear in the Big Blue House called It's a Big Big World and pretty sure it's the same set and costume just turned the Bear into a sloth! My son loved it!"

Ulrika Jonsson, 57, slams trolls for ageist comments over podcast appearance
Ulrika Jonsson took aim at trolls who criticised her appearance following a recent podcast as she also explained why she didn't wear make-up Ulrika Jonsson has slammed trolls who targeted her following a recent podcast appearance. The TV presenter, 57, took aim at the trolls who criticised her appearance recently and called them out for their "nasy comments". It came after the former model appeared on Spencer Matthews' Untapped Podcast, which is also filmed for fans to watch. Ulrika took to Instagram at the weekend to shut down any bad mouthing and had a stern message for those taking aim at her. Ulrika explained in her lengthy post that, while she also had positive comments, some viewers felt the need to call her out on her "over-tanned" and "ageing" appearance. But the star wasn't prepared to let them away with it and explained the reasoning behind her look. After sharing a snap of her blowing a kiss to the camera, she wrote: "I feel I need to address something. I don't get a lot of nasty comments - or if I do, I don't see them or send people love in response. "But a couple of weeks ago I took part in a fab podcast @ to discuss my sobriety with the smart @spencermatthews. I wore no make-up. Partly because I kinda forgot that a project for the ears is nowadays also a feast for the eyes. "But as someone who has had to wear heavy make-up on screen from 5am for years, I'm not a fan." She also confessed to have suffered from eczema as a child, in particularly on her body in the creases of her arms and legs. She also said she had it on her face. Therefore, make-up was "agony" to wear."There were a lot of positive comments about the WORDS I said on the podcast," she continued. "But a considerable amount about my tanned appearance. AND how OLD I look."In a few weeks I will be 58. I will never look like the fresh 21yr old that used to greet you first thing in the morning by the weather board." She also admitted she isn't ashamed to be "a sun worshipper" and knows she is likely to "pay the price" for that. But she also said that her uneven pigmentation also won't be helped by ageing. In a candid confession, Ulrika revealed she uses filters on her pictures on occasion as it's easier than applying makeup. However, she also said she works tirelessly in her garden all year round, which often means she is in the sun. She went on: "I rarely sunbathe any more. Haven't had a sunbed for 6 months - which I do occasionally in winter months. Not ashamed. I have not had a holiday - of any kind - since 2018. That's 7yrs."So, I understand that an over-tanned, imperfect and AGEING face offends you. But try to listen to the words rather than constantly judge women's appearance. You might learn something." And in a defiant sign-off message, she concluded: "And making people feel s*** doesn't make you a hero." While she turned off the comments on the post, Ulrika was met with appreciation from over 20,000 followers hitting the like button. Among them were Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt and Celebs Go Dating's Anna Williamson. Ulrika had been open on the podcast about how sex has become 'interesting' since she stopped drinking alcohol 13 months ago. She revealed how she felt going sober could impact her sex life, but revealed it has helped. And she revealed how not drinking on dates has changed her outlook: "Not having a drink and going on a date, it's hard - it's really hard because people are not as attractive," she said before adding that after drink "you just become a little bit more available I guess - it is easier."

Waterbomb Festival is returning to Hong Kong this summer, and going to Macau for the first time
We've been itching to go to a music festival soon, and Waterbomb has finally answered our prayers, announcing confirmation of their Hong Kong dates this year. This festival originates from South Korea, and is well-known for being a water party with liberal use of water guns on top of a music festival, so be prepared to get soaked. Mark your calendars for October 4 and 5, as Waterbomb will be taking over the Central Harbourfront. The 2025 lineup has yet to be confirmed, but last year saw major Korean artists like Rain, Jay Park, Loco, Gray, Jessi, StayC, PH-1, and more perform on our stage, so this edition is bound to be pretty stellar as well. If you're planning on going, log onto their Instagram and comment who you'd like to see at the festival in their artist wishlist post – and hopefully with enough fan support, you'll get to see your favourite musicians live in Hong Kong. This year also marks the first time ever that the Waterbomb Festival is going to Macau. The precise venue hasn't been confirmed yet, but the dates are coming up soon next month, on August 9 to 10. Ticket information for both events will be released soon, so check this space. We're keeping our fingers crossed that this year the festival's queues will be managed better – and also praying that we won't be hit by a typhoon during the event again!
