Booker Prize winner Kiran Desai up for the award again with long-awaited novel
London, Jul 29 (AP) Indian author Kiran Desai, who won the Booker Prize and then didn't publish a novel for almost two decades, is up for the award again with her long-awaited follow-up. 'The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny," the 677-page tale of two young Indians making their way in the United States, is one of 13 books announced Tuesday as semifinalists for the prestigious 50,000-pound ($67,000) prize. The contenders include authors from nine countries on four continents. It's Desai's first novel since 'The Inheritance of Loss," which won the Booker in 2006. Two previous finalists are up for the prize again: UK writer Andrew Miller, for 'The Land in Winter," and Hungarian-British writer David Szalay for 'Flesh". Tash Aw, who has been a semifinalist twice before, will be the first Malaysian winner if he takes the prize for 'The South". Five of the contenders are from Britain: Miller, Szalay, Natasha Brown ('Universality"), Jonathan Buckley ('One Boat") and Benjamin Wood ('Seascraper"). Books by US writers in the running include Susan Choi's 'Flashlight," Katie Kitamura's 'Audition" and Ben Markovits' 'The Rest of Our Lives." Also on the list are 'Misinterpretation" by Albanian-American Ledia Xhoga, 'Love Forms" by Trinidad's Claire Adam, and 'Endling," a debut novel by Canadian-Ukrainian opera librettist Maria Reva. 'The 13 longlisted novels bring the reader to Hungary, Albania, the north of England, Malaysia, Ukraine, Korea, London, New York, Trinidad and Greece, India and the West Country," said Irish novelist Roddy Doyle, chair of a five-member judging panel that includes actor Sarah Jessica Parker. 'All, somehow, examine identity, individual or national, and all, I think, are gripping and excellent," he said. Founded in 1969, the Booker Prize has a reputation for transforming writers' careers and is open to novels from any country published in the UK and Ireland. Last year's winner was 'Orbital," by British writer Samantha Harvey. A list of six finalists will be announced Sept 23, and this year's winner will be crowned on Nov 10 at a ceremony in London. Now, reports suggest that the film's OTT streaming rights have been acquired by Amazon Prime Video. The film is directed by Pandiraj, known for Etharkkum Thunindhavan. The Times Of India has quoted the latest reports mentioning that a major streaming platform has bought the rights of the film. It will release on Amazon Prime Video. However, neither the makers nor streaming platform has confirmed the news. The story blends themes of love, familial bonding and comedy, offering an emotionally rich and entertaining experience. Audiences have already begun responding positively, with social media flooded with praise for the film's feel-good narrative, relatable characters and warm performances. The film also features comedian Yogi Babu in a special role and the music by Santhosh Narayanan has been widely appreciated for adding emotional depth and charm to the storyline. Although the film was initially announced to have a Telugu version titled Sir Madam, its release status remains unclear. While the Tamil version opened in theatres as planned, tickets for Sir Madam are yet to be listed in Telugu-speaking regions. So far, there has been no official confirmation from the makers about whether the Telugu version will see a delayed theatrical release or skip theatres in favour of a direct OTT premiere. Industry insiders speculate that the team may have chosen to avoid a box-office clash with the big-budget Telugu film Hari Hara Veera Mallu. Vijay Sethupathi has an exciting lineup of films beyond Thalaivan Thalaivii. Up next is Gandhi Talks, an experimental silent comedy-drama written and directed by Kishor Pandurang Belekar. The film co-stars Aditi Rao Hydari, Arvind Swamy, Mahesh Manjrekar and others and has already made history as the first Indian silent film to be screened at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). Nithya Menen will next be seen in Idly Kadai, a Tamil-language drama directed and co-produced by Dhanush under his home banner, Wunderbar Films, in association with Dawn Pictures. The film pairs Nithya with Dhanush in the lead and features a strong ensemble cast including Arun Vijay, Shalini Pandey, Sathyaraj, Parthiban, P. Samuthirakani and Rajkiran.
