Hours Before Murder, Sonam, Raja Raghuvanshi Seen Trekking In Meghalaya
New Delhi:
Hours before Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi's murder, he and his wife, Sonam (the prime accused), were seen trekking on a steep peak in the lush mountains of Meghalaya. A video shot by a tourist "accidentally" captured the Raghuvanshis climbing the hill on May 23 around 9:45 am. Raja was murdered and dumped into a gorge in the afternoon, the same day, by three killers - hired by Sonam and her lover, Raj Kushwaha.
The tourist, Dev Singh, posted the video on Instagram in which Sonam was leading the way up the hill, with Raja following her. She was seen wearing a white t-shirt - which was found by the Meghalaya police near the crime scene. She was also carrying a polythene bag, which reportedly had a raincoat inside. This was the same time when Sonam's three accomplices were following them.
"Yesterday, I was checking videos and I found a recording of the Indore couple. It was around 9:45 am when we were going down, and the couple was going up. I think this was the last recording of the couple, and Sonam was wearing the same white t-shirt, which was found near Raja. I hope this will also help Meghalaya police in connecting the dots," Mr Singh wrote on Instagram.
He added, "Every time I watched Raja in the video, I felt very bad about him. He was looking normal but unaware of what would be waiting for him."
Sources familiar with the sequence of events leading to the grisly murder on May 23 said the newlywed couple had checked out of a hotel - Shipara Homestay - in Nongriat at around 5.30 am and set out on a trek in Cherrapunji half an hour later. Sonam's three accomplices, who were staying at a nearby homestay, also checked out around the same time. Around 10 am, Sonam and Raja completed around 2,000 steps along the trek route when they met the three killers - Anand Kurmi, Akash Rajput, and Vishal Chauhan.
A local guide - whose alertness later helped the cops - had spotted the five together.
According to sources, as the hitmen and Raja began talking, Sonam gradually slowed down and started walking behind them.
Around 12:30 pm, Sonam called Raja's mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, and told her that she was exhausted due to the trek. Raja also spoke to his mother - in their last conversation. An hour later, the group of five (Raja, Sonam, and the three hitmen) drove from Mawlakhiat to the parking lot at Wei Sawdong Waterfalls. Upon reaching, the hitmen killed Raja and threw his body into a gorge.
The newlywed couple was initially reported "missing". But on June 2, cops found Raja's body, turning a missing persons investigation into a murder probe. On the night of June 7, the 'missing' wife was found in an unconscious state at a 'dhaba' in Ghazipur. She was taken to the Ghazipur Medical College for treatment, where she surrendered before the police, and was subsequently taken into custody.

Honeymoon Murder: Weapon Used To Kill Raja Raghuvanshi Found, Was Bought From Guwahati
Last Updated: Vishal Chauhan, one of the accused arrested in the murder case, allegedly attacked Raja with the machete first. Meghalaya Murder: A non local machete or 'dao', which was used to kill Indore-native newlywed Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya, has been found, according to media reports citing the police. As per the sources, the machete was repeatedly used to hit Raja even as the he tried to save himself. Vishal Chauhan, one of the accused arrested in the murder case, allegedly attacked Raja with the machete first. Blood stains were also found on another accused Akash's shirt since the victim tried to defend himself during the attack. Police have also found during the probe that the accused had bought the machete from near Guwahati's railway station. However, according to Raja's preliminary autopsy report, he was attacked twice, at the back and front of his head. Raja and Sonam, who got married on May 11 in Indore, went to Meghalaya on their honeymoon. He was found dead in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls in East Khasi Hills district on June 2, 10 days after the couple went missing, while a search continued for Sonam. She emerged in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, around 1,200 km away from the crime spot, on June 9. The murder took a sensational turn when Raghuvanshi's wife, Sonam, was held by Meghalaya Police along with her three alleged aides, Akash Rajput (19), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Raj Singh Kushwaha (20). The fresh revelations have pointed to a well-orchestrated conspiracy behind Raja's murder. Raj Kushwaha, who was allegedly in a relationship with Sonam Raghuvanshi, has been identified as the mastermind behind Raja's murder with Sonam actively involved in the plot. Earlier today, a new video of the Indore couple trekking in Meghalaya, has surfaced on the social media. On the day of the murder, the couple had checked out of the home stay and set out on a trek to Cherrapunji. A guide who had seen them last saw the couple and offered his services, but they refused. Around 2,000 steps into the around 3,000-steps route, the three accused joined them. According to the police probing the case, the conspiracy to eliminate Raja was hatched in Indore, shortly before his wedding with Sonam on May 11. 'The three young people were friends, and one of them is a cousin of Raj. It was not a typical contract killing. Yes, the plan was to kill and they did it as a favour to their friend Raj," East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told news agency PTI. Raj had given them Rs 50,000 for the expenditures, he said. Syiem further revealed that the plot began in February, when the group was in Indore. The plan revolved around making Sonam disappear, but later turned into a murder conspiracy. 'One plan was to make people believe that she would wash away by a river. Another plan was to murder any woman, burn the body and claim that it was of Sonam. However, none of the plans fructify," the police officer said. After Raja and Sonam were married on May 11, they visited the Kamakhya Devi Temple in Assam. A few days later, the accused also reached the area. According to police, the group initially planned to kill Raja in Guwahati, but later shifted the plan to Shillong. First Published: June 16, 2025, 18:07 IST

ED issues fresh summons to Robert Vadra in Sanjay Bhandri linked PMLA case
The Enforcement Directorate has issued a fresh summons to Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, for questioning in a money laundering case linked to UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari, official sources said on Monday. He has been asked to depose before the federal probe agency here on June 17 for the recording of his statement in this case that is being investigated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. Vadra, 56, was called for questioning in the case on June 10 but he skipped, saying he had flu-like symptoms on June 9 and had undertaken a COVID test as per protocol. His lawyer had then said that Vadra had no intention of avoiding summons and was ready to appear before the ED anytime before or after his travel abroad later this month. The agency is understood to have summoned Vadra to record his statement under the PMLA and subsequently file a chargesheet in the case. The federal probe agency had questioned the businessman for three consecutive days in April in a separate money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in a 2008 land deal in Haryana. He is being investigated in three money laundering cases by the ED. Bhandari (63) fled to London in 2016, soon after the Income Tax Department raided him in Delhi. A UK court earlier this month refused an application filed by the Indian government seeking permission to appeal in Britain's Supreme Court against the discharge of Bhandari in an extradition case, virtually ruling out chances of him being brought to the country to face the law. The ED filed a chargesheet in this case in 2023, alleging that Bhandari acquired the 12, Bryanston Square house in London in 2009 and got it renovated "as per the directions of Robert Vadra, who provided the funds for the renovation". Vadra has denied that he owns any London property directly or indirectly. Terming the charges a "political witch hunt", Vadra said he was being "hounded and harassed" to subserve political ends. The ED is also investigating Vadra in a separate money laundering case linked to alleged financial irregularities in a land deal in Rajasthan's Bikaner.
