Kuching teen who killed five in crash sent to Henry Gurney School for six years
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan imposed the order until the teen reaches the age of 21, and further fined him RM1,500 or two months' imprisonment in default, for driving underage.
The sentence was handed down after the Magistrate's Court received a report from the Social Welfare Department and submissions from Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Fillanny Siji.
The teenager, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty on May 14 to two charges under Sections 41(1) and 39(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, and for driving while under the age of 16.
Speaking to reporters, Mohd Fillanny said the prosecution had sought a custodial sentence in light of the loss of five lives, adding that such cases should serve as a deterrent amid the rising number of road accidents in Kuching.
On May 14, the teen's 35-year-old father also pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 33(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for permitting his son to drive without proper supervision.
He was fined RM15,000, in default 12 months' imprisonment and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service within six months.
On January 14, the teenager lost control of the vehicle he was driving and crashed into two cars and two motorcycles along Jalan Stutong Baru.
Four victims died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Sarawak General Hospital. — Bernama

SEREMBAN, Aug 17 — A welding mishap on a truck tank containing chemical residues of Hexane killed a driver and injured a workshop assistant at Kampung Belangkan, Kuala Sawah yesterday. The deceased was identified as N Jayagobinath, 33, while the injured assistant is Suhardi Labeddu, 40, Metro Ahad reported today. The Fire and Rescue Department initially despatched a seven-man team to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 1.23pm, but later deployed the hazardous materials (Hazmat) crew from a different station to detect hazardous chemicals at the workshop and on the tank truck. 'Witnesses reported that both victims were on top of the tank performing welding work when a sudden explosion threw them nearly three metres into the air, narrowly missing the workshop roof,' Operation Commander, Senior Fire Officer I Mohd Syazwan Saidy, was quoted as saying. He said the truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene from severe head injuries while the injured assistant was rushed to Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital by ambulance for emergency treatment. He added that investigations into the explosion are ongoing to determine the exact cause and ensure safety measures for welding work on chemical tanks are enforced.

Tourist safety in Sabah needs urgent fix, says Tiong King Sing after uncovering serious enforcement lapses
SIBU, Aug 17 — Immediate reforms are needed to safeguard tourist safety in Sabah, said Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. He advised Sabah authorities to step up the necessary actions to enhance the state's tourism image. 'Following a two-day joint sea and land enforcement operation, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture held a meeting with the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment and relevant enforcement agencies to address tourism safety issues, illegal operations and enforcement in Sabah. 'In that meeting, I raised several serious weaknesses regarding tourism safety in Sabah, where the safety of tourists is seen as insufficiently protected,' he said in a statement. According to him, statistics showed between 2023 and July 2025, Sabah recorded several tourism-related accidents that caused multiple deaths and injuries. 'In 2023 alone, there were 14 incidents resulting in six deaths and nine injuries; in 2024, 11 incidents with nine deaths and 28 injuries; while in 2025, up to July, there were 23 incidents with two deaths and two injuries. 'These frequent accidents highlight weak safety management and regulatory oversight, which undermine travellers' confidence and damage Sabah's international tourism reputation,' he said. Tiong said during the two-day operation, he personally led officers from the Tourism Licensing and Enforcement Division and Immigration Department, police and other agencies on inspections around Tawau. He said the operation revealed widespread illegal practices, including overloaded tour buses without tour guides; foreigners renting local licences and operating behind the scenes; foreign divers working illegally; non-tourism vehicles carrying passengers; and boats operating with approval. Johor Regent steps in with key info to help MACC as probe into military links in smuggling syndicate intensifies
CYBERJAYA, Aug 17 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) revealed yesterday Johor Regent, Tunku Mahkota Ismail had provided information that assisted the investigations under Op Sohor, which are currently still ongoing. Its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki said the Regent also wanted to curb smuggling at the country's borders. 'I would like to inform that His Royal Highness Tunku Mahkota Johor as Regent of Johor, has been very cooperative in this matter and wants such activities to be curbed,' he told the media after the close of the Anti-Corruption Graduates Convention (Komawar) here yesterday, adding that the syndicate is believed to be focused only in the southern region of the country with no new arrests being made. 'I expect so far there has been no (new arrests), if there are any links, (for instance) when we look into money laundering it might be possible there are other parties benefitting from this activity, and if so, we will investigate further,' he said. He also said that the commission was looking into the reasons behind the existence of the online media company that two of the suspects arrested under Op Sohor were working for and confirmed that both suspects were not from any mainstream media. 'They work for a company, which name I can't reveal, and we're looking into why it was set up,' Azam said, adding that they believed that both the suspects acted as enablers by leaking information to the syndicate. The MACC had arrested five senior armed forces officers on Wednesday for allegedly leaking military operation information to smugglers and colluding with a syndicate to smuggle in contraband, including drugs and cigarettes, estimated to be worth RM5 million a month. Meanwhile, Azam said during his speech at the close of Komawar that it was organised not only to provide exposure and education on corruption and integrity but to instil values and build character among university students.
