What do the pope and this Miami chef have in common? Love for Peru.
Catch up quick: The Chinese-Peruvian chef — a member of the award-winning Chang family that ran Itamae together — grew up in Chiclayo, Peru, before moving to Miami at age 10.
Pope Leo, a naturalized Peruvian citizen, served as bishop of Chiclayo until 2023. His ascendance to the papacy has brought newfound attention to the Peruvian community there.
One restaurant, Las Americas, has a sign outside its door that reads: "The pope ate here."
"In Chiclayo, we're very proud of our food," Chang Cumpa tells Axios.
What they're saying: Chang Cumpa says she had her first communion in Chiclayo's main cathedral, where Pope Leo has held Mass. Some of her family members have met him before.
Chang Cumpa was on her way to work last week as she listened to the newly elected pope's first public address.
When the pope switched from Italian to Spanish to send a message to his Peruvian diocese, she was beside herself.
"I honestly thought he was going to speak in English. When he said that about Chiclayo, I couldn't believe it. How beautiful. My home town."
The big picture: Chang Cumpa, a James Beard Award-winning chef, celebrates her family's roots at Maty's, her Peruvian restaurant in Midtown named after her late grandmother.
One of the many family photos that hang on the wall — of her great-grandparents' wedding — is from 1928.
"It's beyond the food. It's a love letter to thank my grandma for everything she did," Chang Cumpa said in a recent episode of Toast web series " Signature Dish."
State of play: Chang Cumpa tells Axios that Miami's diversity has propelled the 305 into the culinary capital it is today.
In her own family, Chang Cumpa says she doesn't take the awards or recognition for granted.
Her brother is Michelin-star chef Nando Chang of Itamae Ao, and their father, Fernando "Papa" Chang, heads up B-Side at 1-800-Lucky.
"We're still immigrants. We still have that immigrant fight and that desire to do right by our parents, who did a lot of fighting."
Zoom in: On the Toast show, Chang Cumpa says the most popular dish at Maty's is the scallop cebiche — a savory seafood dome covered with sliced grapes and topped with cilantro leche de tigre.
"Basically every table that comes in to eat orders one of these," Chang Cumpa tells host Sophia Roe.
Chef's recs: Here are chef Valerie's favorite Peruvian restaurants in Miami (that are not owned by her family).

Black Myth: Zhong Kui promises more ARPG and Souls-like action
With an end-of-show announcement that caught us by surprise, Gamescom 2025 wrapped its first broadcast with the announcement of Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a game rich in Chinese mythology and lore that focuses on a ghost-catching god. Developer Gamescience took the gaming world by storm with its first title, Black Myth: Wukong and walked away with a slew of nominations and wins from The Game Awards. While short, the trailer gave us a quick peek at the titular character: a man dressed in traditional Chinese armor, sitting astride a truly massive tiger. He brings up the rear of a procession of two gui carrying what appears to be a large sword. Recommended Videos The trailer opens with two men climbing up a statue, only to pause in fear at the sight of the procession. No details of gameplay or story are given, nor do we have any hint of a release date yet. However, Game Science says it is tradition to announce the progress of their games to players on August 20 (believed to be the birthdate of Sun Wukong), although it admits 'even Yocar himself has absolutely no idea' about a release date. Interested players can check for updates. Here's what we do know: the game isn't a direct sequel to Black Myth: Wukong. Instead, the studio wants 'to build more distinct game experiences, to challenge ourselves with bolder features, and to bring fresh ideas to our world and narrative design.' That said, fans of Black Myth: Wukong don't have to worry. Game Science promises the westward journey hasn't come to an end. The development of Zhong Kui is a temporary pause; a new project that borrows from the same source material and offers players something new to sink their teeth into. It will be another single-player ARPG, so be prepared for more punishing difficulty and bosses that test the limits of your skill.

Meta's AI voice translation feature rolls out globally
On Tuesday, Meta rolled out its new voice dubbing feature globally. The Reels feature uses generative AI to translate your voice, with optional lip-syncing. Mark Zuckerberg first previewed the feature at Meta Connect 2024. At launch, the translations are only available for English to Spanish (and vice versa). The company says more languages will arrive later. At least at first, it's restricted to Facebook creators with 1,000+ followers. However, anyone with a public Instagram account can use it. The tool trains on your original voice and generates a translated audio track to match your tone. The lip-syncing add-on then matches your mouth's movements to the translated speech. The demo clip the company showed last year was spot-on — eerily so. You can choose whether to add lip syncing and preview before posting. (Meta) To use the feature, choose the "Translate your voice with Meta AI" option before publishing a reel. That's also where you can choose to add lip syncing. There's an option to review the AI-translated version before publishing. Viewers will see a pop-up noting that it's an AI translation. Meta says the feature works best for face-to-camera videos. The company recommends avoiding covering your mouth or including excessive background music. It works for up to two speakers, but it's best to avoid overlapping your speech. The company frames the feature as a way for creators to expand their audiences beyond their native tongues. As such, it included a by-language performance tracker, so you can see how well it's doing in each language. YouTube launched a similar feature last year. Apple has gotten in on the action, too: Messages, Phone and FaceTime apps have live translation tools in iOS 26.

Since many people don't like change — Olive Garden is also appeasing fans by keeping many of their classic pasta and sauce combos but spicing things up by throwing in a new Spicy Three-Meat Sauce.
