Super Bowl-winning veteran gives glowing review to Broncos' rookie punter
The Australian punter has a powerful leg, and he received a glowing review from San Francisco 49ers veteran Thomas Morstead after the team's first preseason game.
"It was funny, both he and Morstead were there," Broncos coach Sean Payton said when asked about Crawshaw's preseason debut. "I told you guys I had the chance to draft him in New Orleans in 2009. I don't know what year it is for him now, 18? He was a fifth-round pick, and he came up to me afterwards and just went on about having a chance to meet our guy and then watch his flexibility. He just said — and Thomas has done this long enough — he said, 'Man, you really got a good one.' So it's working through some of those things that we do with rookies. You guys see it, and him getting used to the game situations. He has a bright future.'
Morestead won a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints and he has a Pro Bowl selection and a second-team All-Pro nod on his resume. The 39-year-old punter knows what it takes to have success as a punter in the NFL.
'Like I've said before with Jeremy, his talent level is outstanding," special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi said of Crawshaw. "Like any specialist, the most important thing is the production on the field. There's talent and there's production, and so the consistency is going to be the most important thing.
"It's like you guys have probably heard me talk before, specialists are a lot like golfers or swingers in baseball. You could be the most talented guy, but when you get in the batter's box or the tee box, you've got to produce. So that's the only thing we have left in this equation is getting him out there in these games, putting him in some live situations and seeing it. He's a pleasure to work with every day. I'm really, really happy we have him.'
Crawshaw had three punts for 111 yards last week, averaging 37 yards per boot with a long of 50 yards. Denver knows he has the talent. With time, the consistency should follow.

NFL analyst says this Texans defender could be a first-time Pro Bowler in 2025
After a breakout season in the secondary, the Houston Texans have a pair of players with Pro Bowl potential heading into the 2025 season. Calen Bullock, who led the Texans in interceptions with five, has a chance to once again hit the total after an impressive start to training camp. Cornerback Kamari Lassiter, the Texans' No. 2 defensive back, is poised to be one of the rising stars after holding the lowest completion percentage among rookie cornerbacks. Which of the two has a better chance of heading down to Orlando? Kevin Patra believes Lassiter will end up being the name who ends up putting up numbers that prove he's the next big-time defensive back entering 2026. "I know I glowed about Nate Wiggins' rookie season above -- but Lassiter was even better, snagging three interceptions while generating 10 passes defended. Generally, when a rookie is playing opposite an All-Pro like Derek Stingley Jr., we'd expect him to be targeted significantly more, even with help coverage going his way," Prata wrote. "In 2024, Lassiter's target-per-coverage-snap rate sat at 15.0%. Stingley's: 15.1%. That underscores just how suffocating Lassiter was. His -11.5% completion percentage over expected was by far the best among all corners, with no one else at the position cracking double digits (the Cardinals' Garrett Williams was No. 2 at -8.6%). Lassiter's -7.8 receptions over expected also ranked No. 1 among all corners (minimum of 300 coverage snaps). The knock on Lassiter was the four TDs allowed (which cut into his EPA numbers), but the rookie consistently forced tough throws from QBs and made plays on the ball when given the chance. In a fierce DeMeco Ryans defense, the corner can grow even more in 2025." The Texans take on the Carolina Panthers this Saturday in preseason game No. 2. It's unclear if fans making their way to NRG Stadium will see Lassiter in action, along with the rest of the Texans' starters.

Messi expected to return for Miami against Galaxy
Lionel Messi is ready to return for Inter Miami when they host the Los Angeles Galaxy in a Major League Soccer clash that will launch a key stretch for the Florida club, coach Javier Mascherano said Friday. Following Saturday's Galaxy match, Miami plays Mexican club Tigres UANL on Wednesday in the Leagues Cup quarter-finals. "Leo is doing well," Mascherano told reporters on Friday before training. "He has been training with the team since Wednesday. Unless something strange happens during today's training session, we think he'll be available for tomorrow's game." Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi suffered a "minor muscle injury," apparently a hamstring strain, in the 11th minute of Inter's August 2 Leagues Cup match against Necaxa. The 38-year-old Argentine superstar returns as the Herons vie to bounce back from a humbling 4-1 loss to Orlando City last weekend. Inter have slipped to sixth in the MLS Eastern Conference with 42 points -- nine behind leaders Philadelphia but with three matches in hand. Messi, the reigning MLS Most Valuable Player, leads the Golden Boot race with 18 goals and nine assists in 18 games. Miami will be favored at home against the Galaxy, who are the defending MLS Cup champions but have sunk to last place with the league's worst record. The Galaxy, however, did qualify for the Leagues Cup quarter-finals, and Mascherano cautioned that Miami can't afford to take them lightly. "For me, they're a team in which the MLS standings don't reflect their quality, especially the quality of their players," Mascherano said. "The reality is that maybe they didn't start the season well because of injuries and different situations. But they've improved a lot over the last few months." bb/js
